Nicely done Sir Kevy💈💈 Those "Spoiler" blades were version 3, packaged in 1975, AFAIK! I got the .68 GC / super knurl first, then when the .84 heads became available separately I picked up one of those. I tend to reach for the .84 mostly, but both shave marvelously😊 Noble Otter is another top shelf performer. Another great shave and video👍 Enjoy!

That guy who gave you that stuff sounds BRILLIANT. One of the best I'd say.
Seriously though, you're very welcome! I should've warned you about how thirty Noble Otter is. It's lovely stuff though. Barbarr is my personal favourite. A really unique barbershop scent, smells like warm cookies.
Very glad you had such a great shave and interested in that comparison between the two plates too. Hope you get much joy out of the bits I sent over and thank YOU for the great videos.

Great shave. The Gillette Spoiler blades were one of the first stainless steel DE blades to be sold in the early to mid 60s. When Wilkinson Sword developed and released their new stainless blades, Gillette capitalized on it and quickly developed their own stainless blades. Have a great weekend

I'm for a milder razor. ASD2, Gillette Fat Handle Tech or Slim Adjustable on 1 or 2 setting. It makes me find the right angle, which prevents nicks, and I find it easier to shave ATG, giving me a very close shave. It also makes it easier to use a sharper blade. I don't need anything sharper than an Astra to get a close shave, but I won't shy away from a sharper blade such as a Nacet because the razor disciplines it. I shave every day, which is another reason not to go aggressive with the razor. To be honest, I don't own any that are aggressive. I've never bothered to buy one, knowing I'd never want to use it.

    Just stumbled across your channel.
Only been "proper" shaving for about two months.
    Lots of trial and error.
I saw this razor getting lots of comments, so I've ordered one, should be arriving tomorrow.
I'm enjoying learning a new skill and the fact that it takes time and effort.
And I'm enjoying it mindfully, a bit of me time 👊
Oh and I'm from Scotland too 🦄
Get a roll and sausage doon ye.
I'm going to check your latest video and I hope yer no deid!

Been a hot minute since I've had time to watch one of your videos Kevy. That said I bought myself a gamechanger last year and I rarely use anything else. It's smooth, efficient and you can damn near not have to pay super close attention to it. Best razor I've ever owned. I have the standard .68 gap. I have thought of getting a .84 head to try as well. Great shave there btw. Cheers from Canada!

RazoRock is a fantastic company - they revamped the Edwin Jagger DE89 with a 316 stainless handle and an aluminum head that covers the tabs MJ-90 for $30, they offer the same great 316 stainless handles with double open comb chrome zinc heads for $20 as well as standard zinc heads and they offer the all stainless handle and head Mamba and Game Changers for less than $65 - they may not be as pretty as a Timeless or Charcoal or ATT or Wolfman but I think every bit as good at a fraction of the price! I own all of the above but RazoRock is truly exceptional.
    Outstanding video as always!

Great shave, Kevy. I got back into wet shaving 1 1/2 yrs. ago and have just been working on my technique with DE & SE razors. I've recently just started to catalog what blade I use with what razor and to my surprise I find there is a difference. I've a long way to go, so many razors and so many blades.

Funny you mentioned the changeable weather there in Scotland. I remember some years back I was staying across the firth from Edinburgh at a pub in a place called Abedrour ..(nice folks there actually). I woke with a hangiover after the Spring Ball and decided to head into Edinburgh on the 'choo' for a stickybeak. I walked out that morning into a 14 degree overcast wearing just a footy jersey and jeans . By the time I got off at the train station in Edinburgh and walked upstairs it was down to steady rain and 1 degree LOL it was the most miserable day I'd spent anywhwere trying to do any sightseeing. Thank god for a network of warm pubs and flat beer (and the odd wee dram of whisky to warm the bones on each arrival) LOL.

Went with the traditional beginners guide to razors with the 34c and DE89. Mild by reputation and in terms of blades, the 'usual suspects' in Astra, Pol Silver and Personna. Occasional wonderful shave, but several examples of rash in my traditionally hard to master neck.
Feather razor and Feather blade? Absolutely no irritation at all, albeit mild combo. Like you, I reckon I need to stick with that.
Matt at Razor Emporium has suggested to me lately to try cold water shaves exclusively and to try to avoid aiming for the Holy Grail of bbs every time. Currently allowing my face to settle following the Fine Marvel shave the other day before going 'cold'.

    • @kevyshaves4109

It takes a while to find out what works best for you. You've nearly found it with the Feather. I was a bit skeptical about the cold water but for me, it does seem to work. It's ok just now when the weather is good but I'm not sure it will be as enjoyable when it's snowing outside! Lol 😂 Cheers. Kevy 👍😀

What a generous, fortuitous haul! I won Richter Custom's Noble Otter soap giveaway on IG. The scent is Le Noir et Vanille. It is a very subdued leather, vanilla, and white pepper scent. The fragrance reminds me of having a vanilla latte in an old library. The sweetness, mixed with book leather, and aromatics give a relaxing shave. I couldn't find the matching splash anywhere. It was sold out at every one of the large online shave retailers. I finally found it at Smallflower (Merz Apothacary). This example you used sounds brilliantly complex. A scent for year round use I'd say. I imagine that glorious Pils razor is on its way back home. Those blades were outstanding! I am curious to see how it performs in either of the Blacklands in your collection, or even the FatBoy. I'm very relieved you turned the light on. I was afraid I had a tumor halfway through this video. I hope your weekend was quiet, and restful. Cheers, mate. My regards to your doting Mrs, and the indelible Riley.

Hi Kevy! Sunny Scotland...just wait a few minutes. Soon you can enjoy the liquid sunshine. Gillette Super Stainless blades are a treat to shave with for sure. I have a few tucks of them laying about. Always smooth shave and the blades have a nice longevity. You can reasonably expect 8 to 10 awesome shaves out of it. I have never managed more than 12 shaves out of the Spoilers. To get into that 20 plus shave territory you need a Gillette Platinum Plus blade, Schick Plus Platinum blade, or a Personna 74 blade. I read great things about the Gamechanger razors. Honestly, I don't need more razors. Yet my collection is mostly vintage and I hate to travel with those unless I go via my own car. So, I have my eye on the EJ 3one6. A great shave as usual. Dundee or Bust in September! Take care.

This is a year on.......did you get your 3one6 razor? I bought the all stainless one and the red anodized handled one. Beautifully made razor. I love the fit of the top cap on the base plate....no play at all. I get a very smooth shave with a Supershave X blade in the 3one6.
      Take care,

Great shave Kev. yeah the spoiler is a pretty pricey blade right now...I bought a shit-ton last year when they were a wee bit cheaper and more plentiful. The blades carry the Gillette build codes too on one side so you can see what year they were made. I have some ranging from R2 through to the latest I have here which looks like ..so far ...B4(1981 fourth quarter). I generally get a very comfy 15-20 shaves from a single blade. Very decent blades I must admit. I love the spoiler in a Gillette Slim Adjustable set to 7.

I noticed that blade's date code is from 1981. I have a Super Speed from 1980 and another from 1982, and it's interesting to think that, back in the day, each might have used blades from the same batch of the one in this video. Indeed so: a sharp, smooth blade in a mild, smooth, razor is wonderful. (Hence my affection for Gillette Super Speeds.) For those like me, who began shaving when dispensers like the one in the video were standard, it's jarring culture shock to find so many people who have never seen one. Tempus fugit.

Nice shave as always, Kevy. Could you go back and try and old classic -- Proraso shaving soap? I just might not be loading enough in the brush to get the depth of lather that you do; it just seems barely enough. I also use a Plissoft synthetic brush; maybe I should switch to my badger?
Blade and razor combo -- I definitely notice a difference in the first shave and the last shave. I notice more in the last shave when the blade is starting to lose it's sharpness and the shave feels a little painful. Like you, I DO prefer a milder razor with a more aggressive blade -- Rockwell plate 2/4 using a Feather, for example. What I haven't tried is using a less aggressive blade paired with a more aggressive razor -- Dorco or Wilkinson Sword with a Gillette Adjustable on settings 7-9. I'll have to try that out.
    Have a great weekend!

Looking forward to the comparrison shave with the .84 razor. I got the .84 and I don't care for it... the operative angle is too shallow. Feels like I'm just pulling the blade square against my face instead of getting in UNDER the whiskers. Kind of reminded me of the EJ de89, in that way. My guess is the .68 is the same, without the additional aggression.

The moment I saw you swirl, and keep swirling, and still keep swirling into that soap, I knew you were going to get a lather overload! 😁 Those soaps usually are "locked and loaded" within 10-15 swirls of a damp brush and will usually give you enough lather for 3-5 passes + cleanup.
Have to say that that 0.68 GC is giving you a much better shave than the 0.84. Definitely a lot less weepers.
I myself have dialed down to a lower aggression setting for my own shaves, and instead enjoying the smoother, less damaging shaves. Sure I might need to do a little extra cleanups, but when you walk away with that glass BBS with no weepers or skin irritation, that's a win in my books.
Great razor, great soap and a damn good shave there Kevy!
And that's what's counts, have a damn good shave that you enjoy.
ps: My go to now is sharp blades (Feathers / Kai / Zaza ) with milder razors.
Feathers and my Rockwell 6S-R3 is PERFECT.
Takes of thick wiry stubborn micro stubble, leaving you glass smooth without the blade catching, nicking or causing irritation.

Beautifully made out of 316L stainless Steel. Another very efficient razor is the Executive shaving Outlaw standard, also stainless Steel.

As always very entertaining and a great shave. I've been on the fence over the .68 and you've given the push I needed. If a guy has over 45 razors in his den does he need professional help in your opinion? Did you ever imagine that someone would ask you about getting professional mental health for themselves?

Thanks Allen. 45 razors doesn't qualify you for professional help. When you get to 60, it's time to get help. You have a little way to go. Carry on buying is what I recommend 😂😂

@@kevyshaves4109 Thanks Kevy, I was worried there for a while but if you say I'm ok well then Dr.Freud I'm ok! On ward to 60 and a larger den.

Nice video. I wonder if Gillette quit making these blades if they lasted too long...not good for business. BTW yours are 1983, I think. I have received some of these blades most in open containers and don't trust that they are new...so I won't use them. I sometimes wonder why we always seek the perfect shave and keep doing passes and end up irritated or cut. Maybe it's better to go with a somewhat aggressive/efficient razor and a sharp blade and do 2 passes...and then just quit....hard thing to do if you enjoy shaving. Cheers

That's a good theory about why they stopped producing these blades. Today's world is a very throw away society. Things aren't made to last as it doesn't make the companies any money, shame really. Kevy 😀👍

Think I'll use my gamechanger .84 for my next shave. I love those blades. (in my top 5).

Great shave💈I looked on eBay for those blades and they are like 14$ US dollars. That Kmart price must have been awhile back ?

Yes, they are expensive just now as they're classed as vintage. I think the pack I have are from 1981-82. Kevy 😀

As alw great choices, Kevy. Do find bladegaps 0,6 to 0.9 the sweet spot for most skins, growths. Do we need an R41? I started wet shaving way b4 these videos were available, so one had to buy to find out. Thus mny dens full with tools, nvr or little used. Own a slim + DE89, few soaps, few blades n that's it. Now we own too mny, I can shave 14d or more using another razor/blade/soap/brush ea day. Sure there're differences, but more marginal than justifying such investments. Guess we call it 'hobby'. On my way to collect my '3one6', what to do... Enjoy yr sunny Scottish weekend, St. Andrews sure looking beautifull, like Dundee. Achim+

For a new wet shavers what specifics are you looking for in a blade? What is the feel you look for?

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  5 років тому +1

Firstly I look for how smooth it feels when its cutting through the stubble. It takes abit of time to know what it feels like and the best way to learn is to try as many different types of blades as possible. You'll get to know when a blade feels smooth or how some blades are sharper than others. Stick with it. All the best. Kevy 😀

Be VERY careful with those ‘international’ signs, Kevy. In Bulgaria, Albania, and (Northern) Macedonia a headshake means yes, and nodding means no.
