I checked out a fee of your videos. Great content! And a lot of great info you offer. I am teaching myself how to weld and fabricate in my free time and looking to do something on the side. Thank you! I subscribed.
There is good money in wrought iron repair and fabrication. I have built many gates and enjoy the challenges of railing fabrication and installation too
I bought a welder 2.5 years ago as a hobby. I now have a mig and two stick welders. Plasma, Oxy Acetylene, Chop saw Evolution. Evolution circular saw, SWAG table/milwaukee bandsaw, Mag drill and a spool gun to play with aluminum. I do not do side work for the most part but got into making AR500 targets. I just buy the paddles/steel,tubing etc. I cut it and weld it up. One thing i did get that i really like is the gouging tips for a plasma cutter. It helps when you want to remove welds and don't have the big carbon arc setup. Don't have to worry about burning the parent metal as with Oxy.
I had a mobile welding business for about 7 years. I did a lot of architectural work and fabrication for food services. One problem I had was doing much work in my garage, the city will shut you down. That is why I went mobile.
this was an awesome video for me.. I've got my own very small and very new mobile welding company on the side right now but I'm thinking about joining my local pipefitter union as well. thanks for info
You know after you fix these buckets you should put hard facing on the buckets, it will make your welding last longer! Anytime you do a bucket of any kind you should hard face it! Just get 90 or 110 ---7018 stick welding rods
7018 is NOT a hard facing rod. The bead is way too soft. You should know what you’re talking about before you try to tell people what to do chuck! Great video mcf thank you!
I work in a shop on submarines (all submarine work is done indoors here) one question i got for mobile/outdoor welders is how do you deal with wind? Or i guess if its windy you just use stick instead huh?
Great video! Im starting welding school at a college next tuesday 8/13/24! You showed what part of my goal is with welding and that is welding repair and designing and making my own metal products. But before you started getting side work, did you or do you recommend working for someone to gain the experience 1st?😃
Do what he says but remember this it's going to be your work that they see and Word of Mouth once you do a great job and that gets out to other people you will see work come to you like crazy
the sign in your yard is great. Always worked for me until I moved into a zone 5 residential neighorhood that does not even allow yard sale signs. Code enforcer came by and told me to remove the sign or pay $1000.00 fine.
I make knives and hobby weld. Years ago I worked for an Geotechnical Engineering Company doing soil, concrete, asphalt testing, and we had a drill rig for doing core samples. The drill augers would wear down significantly and were expensive to replace. I talked them into getting an AC/DC stick welder and when it was slow I would set them up and build them back up with 7018, then run a hard-faced bead around them. It was easy and paid out quick, and that would be a good place to possibly drum up some business. I have been building custom racks and accessories for Side x Sides and ATVs lately as the factory stuff is really expensive and generic. I built a kayak rack for one and it works well.
I do mobile welding on pontoon boats. I have 3 marinas I weld for. They have given my number out to personal customers. Also I have put my business on Google Maps. I have got jobs from that. And it's free advertising.
Coffee table you did is almost the same as what I finished building today although my welding looks like a chicken's rear end compared to yours but aside from the quality of the welding, my table has 45 degree braces instead of the straight vertical ones you used. All I need to do still is to add mounting brackets to attach the table top, which I also need to make, then I need to fill in the flaws plus prime and paint. Unfortunately selling it would be difficult because where I am from, people do not want to pay for anything and they also dot understand or care all the costs that goes into making something, in effect they are just a bunch of beggars that want everything for free.
@@mcfwelding Something I noticed while watching your newest video with Dalton working under the trailer is that the name on the trailer is Pinnacle, which ironically is also the brand name of my multi process inverter welder. Another thing was I've realized fabricators use tape measures even for really awkward position measurements and none use digital laser measuring devices. Something to think about.
You ever think about working for yourself full time? I'm also in a union, in an apprenticeship, and when I tell people that I want to eventually go out on my own a few years after i turn out they all say you're crazy, you can't do that because you have a pension and insurance blah blah blah.
Who pays the pension and for your insurance? The company you work for makes enough money off you to pay for that in the future. I've been in a Millwright Apprenticeship/Union and I can do significantly better than what I am doing now doing the things Im doing on my own. You don't have a lot to lose.
So I gotta ask - non welding related: I noticed all the Unadilla tT shirts - "The other side sucks!!!" maybe that was just in the early '80s. Lemme know!
I don't do social media for work, I'm a bit oldschool and prefer word of mouth and business cards. What I'm shooting for is aluminum and stainless tig welding repairs. Food industry and otherwise. How can I find my first customer?

Have you tried “scarfing tips” on the oxy acetylene? They work really well too.
@@imbrandon16 I have, yes that works great also. I use it more on bigger projects.

I recently started doing side work again! So far I’m being flooded with work so far things are going good
I know my limits but I have everything I need to do for larger jobs so I can do a bit more than a lot of people who just do side work
that table is sweet. thanks for the info man

Practice
McFab 🤣 people are something else.
Hey there's a name for your painting!
i couldnt take listening to that lol. and hey that could be a option for the painting lol
What do you recommend for someone that lives in an area (state) FULL of welders…seems like the market around me is flooded.
not sure, just start small I suppose and work your way up

That's what I do for a living, don't build it up with 7018 though that would take forever for how many I have to do lol.

So I would be interested in how you price your work
$100 an hour
Where do you get the metal to weld
Metal supply store

How much do you charge to fix the bucket?
$250
Got a name for your painting:
Mic Fab. 😅😂🤣
I started welding in 1999. Back in the late 90's you could not get a good affordable welder for someone who is starting out. Or a plasma cutter.
what size everlast welder is that? i got a 250ex tig and 251 mig everlast
its an i-mig 230i
@@mcfwelding i just bought the 251si

I think the guy in your painting looks like a Fabrizio 😉 lol

Judging by what I see I'd pay you around 15/hr.
I'll settle for $15.50 an hour no less!
If you put the material and the welding rig i accpted🐂
