Excellent video. Hayter service agent said it was the gearbox and it would be £300 to fix. Now with your video and a few hours on the spanners, my Hayter 56 auto-drive is driving itself again. Well explained and really helpful thanks.
Hello. Thank you for this review. Very interesting and should come in handy in future. This did not cover the problem I've got. Will keep looking. Thanks again.
@@themowerman i have a hatyer 41 2008 model. Battery just failed after all this time. Changed battery but its not charging. I was looking how to test and find fault.
I am looking forward to finding a mower left for scrap on the side of the road so i can have a go at it Mick. You’ve got me going !! Mine are working ok at the moment.
I am surprised how different the mower frames are than North America. Good to see you in your element in the shed. That is quite the drive. 2 belts, variable speed. Give the pulley a Happy Birthday to funny. Nice fix Mick. Good thing a Briggs will run with very little oil.
Well gday mate lol how you doing.. yeah we have a lot of different stuff over here..the hayter is a leading manufacturer in the uk.. yeah sometimes you have to give these mowers a happy birthday lol
I bought a hayter harrier 41 with a drive problem at an auction (very cheap) on the basis that i could fix it - followed this video and managed to connect everything up with new belts - mine has a spring which i attached using a spring puller goes on the little notch on the gold bracket - couple of pounds off amazon made the job so much easier- However it still wouldn't work - thought it might be the pulley itself so have bought a new one - whilst waiting for it to arrive i realised the the gold bracket in this video is different - it has an extra hole at the bottom - looking at a parts diagram this suggests the cable from the lever goes into this and controls the drive. brilliant video and gave me confidence to buy a second hand hayter - £37 pounds bargain - learnt so much about cleaning carbs as well from the other videos - i knew nothing about engines and have now found a new hobby - just got to make sure i don't keep buying old mowers
No not the height adjustment bar, it’s a pulley on an arm that is fitted to the plastic under guard (I think) and it goes between the rear roller and the auto drive belt. Think it’s held in place by a spring shaped like a “V” I’ll try and find the marker where I saw it briefly in your other video
Just worked out that the “jockey assembly pulley” attaches by a half bearing which clamps to the under guard. That’s held in place with a grip washer. But still can’t work out the orientation of the spring
Hmm don't know if I have seen a mower with two drive belts that is that small. Excellent diagnosis and repair. That pulley reminds me of my pulley on my old Cushman scooter. Great video.
A nice easy fix and service. Those pulleys are what you find on CVT transmissions. The variable pulley gives you the different gear ratios. Good to see the DeWalt getting some action. I've got one myself to compliment my DCF899.
Sounds like a severe case of a lack of lubricant. And she's will be ready to rock and roll. I think that it hadn't seen oil scine it left the factory Mick. 😎👍
Very good video and very helpful. My son brought his Haytor to me to fix. I found the aluminium bracket attached to the gearbox was broken. He has ordered a replacement but it will be a few days before it arrives. I hope I can remember where everything goes and don't end up with a bolt extra or missing.!
Brilliant Mick just picked up one of these and the pull cord needs replacing as a bit frayed by the handle. I was thinking of cutting the end off and pulling out a little bit but seems jammed now in the recoil. Only the plastic guard on top of the engine has three integral clips. I unclipped it to get to the recoil but seems still fixed in place by another plastic piece under it towards the front? Do you know how it comes off please?
@@themowerman oh yeah brilliant Mick thanks. I worked out how to get pull cord going longer by holding the cord and Winding the blade by hand of course with gloves and the plug disconnected lol I find it a bit wobbly on the wheels. Looks same as that one wobbling about bit crooked?
Brilliant video's, do you a video on replacing the rear roller on a Hayter Sprit 41 (2015 model), I having problems removing the metal pins that hold the cogs / chain in place, what do you use to remove these.
Just watched the service film. Very insightful and useful. I have a Hayter Harrier 41 Quantum from 1999, so similar age to one in your film. I had the mower serviced recently, although, being ignorant of what was actually done, other than a new spark plug, oil and a new blade, (which wasn't given a sharp edge), I am now wondering whether a proper job was done for the princely sum of £120! Since then it has started to surge. I shall check the air filter first but if this isn't the issue, what else could it be?
A great video Mick. I’m not a fan of variator drive systems on Hayters. I think the old side drive is better, although I can appreciate their benefits. Great channel fella, take it easy. I’ve bought an ultrasonic cleaner and said to the good lady it’s for Christmas 🤣
Micks Mowers definitely got a spring. I’ve got a picture on my phone from when I had one apart in November but I don’t know how to publish the pictures on here. Lol.
Micks Mowers hi mick. I’m working on a Suffolk punch 17ks at the moment, why do they have an oil filler and dip stick at both front and rear of the engine? Surely you can just add oil in one place ?
Hi Mick can you tell me if a Hayter, Briggs and Stratton, Hunter 4C 1990 ish., has belts on it, i always assumed the blade was on the end ofthe crankshaft..it's just a push mower, Fred in Essex. cheers.
@@themowerman Well you have to push it, hasnt go any drive on it, just a blade at the bottom that spins round, so i assume from that it has no rubber belts on, but i am not sure how the blade is driven, it looks like it comes straight off the engine crank shaft?
Do you have a video that covers the tensioning arm on a hayter 41? It’s a small bar with a sidearm and a pulley at one end. I can’t for the life of me figure out how it’s held in place in the channel the side arm sits in. Some sort of butterfly spring?! Confused.
Hi Mick love the show, I have a question, do you know if you can buy the thin tin plate that goes in between the two pulleys , on the variator pulley , I can’t seem to find it separately, many thanks John

Engine has no oil; at 1:57 you show us a honking, gunked-up oilly spark plug and say it's running lean. I only really know about 2-strokes - is that a sign of lean running in 4-strokes? On a 2-stroke lean running would give a white-ish clean plug with electrode wear. I'd say that's where the oil is going: into the cylinder! On 2 stroke it would be. I'm really confused. Thumbs-upped though.

Hi hi
Great video as always! Do you like the rollers or rear wheels better for mowers? Never used a roller mower before here in the states...
It depends on the lawn.. for a well looked after one I would say a roller... For a yard that is a little bumpy I would say wheels
what is the reason for the back roller?? and not wheels??
K&D SCRAPPING it flattens the grass and gives better strips. Good for flat lawns
