@18:18 "We also all get an action card". I don't think you do. Nobody starts with action cards if I remember correctly. You could all have spent a strategy token to do the secondary of Politics, and DRAW 2 cards each.
That's okay, there were plenty of rules they got a bit wrong but... I mean... For my first game we totally did the fleet pool wrong and that it didn't apply until the end of the tactical action. And... There was some other rules, don't remember them though. Point is, the first couple of games, you always get some rules wrong with this game.
Having never seen an SUSD playthru before, I’d thought it was going to be a rather didactic affair. Instead I got a silly and joyous romp. Subverted my expectations in the best way possible! :D

14:10 lies, you do need to be next to each other to make a transaction whether it involves trade goods or promissory notes does not matter. Only time that rule does not apply would be during the agenda phase of the game, which this is not. Not that anyone will read this comment on a 2+ hour long part 1 livestream from 4 years ago to find rule clarifications ;)
Grabbing leadership first is also always a good idea though, more command counters means more incidental secondaries and just more options to do stuff in general. Hacan also grabbing trade is never a bad play either; yes they can always replenish commodities for free anyway but those extra 3 trade goods and being able to hold everyone elses trade goods effectively by the balls is a great bit of leverage, which was how he ended up with 9 trade goods straight off. And tech is just always great. So it's not always so clear cut.

The player using the trade strategy card can replenish other ppls commodities for free - otherwise it wouldn't really make sense, spending your strategy choice on trading and relying on other ppl paying tokens
Yeah, the trick with trade is deciding whether you want to force others to spend tokens to activate and get their commodities, or if you want to leverage your position and make good deals by letting them have it for free, on the basis of then trading with those players. Most of the time, races with lower commodities won't bother spending a token to replenish, so if you let them replenish freely they'll be more inclined to trade with you. But of course, players with higher commodity pools can be bargained with for more goods, so maybe you want to let them replenish more freely. A lot of it depends on who each of your races are, the specific board positions each of you occupy and your relative military strengths that will inform your decision to let them replenish freely. Do you want to piss off the aggressive neighbouring military powerhouse by NOT letting them replenish, or do you force them to spend valuable tokens to do so and incur their ire? Will they use those new resources to build ships and attack you even if you let them, of will they take the fight elsewhere in an effort to maintain peaceful trades in future rounds? Will they even trade their goods with YOU, or take them elsewhere, perhaps funding your true enemies military? There's a lot of subtly and complexity in something as seemingly simple as letting other players gain commodities freely.
When they put their faction sheets on the board, I was screaming. After hours upon *hours* (it’s not actually hours, but it feels like that) of putting the Custodians’ tile on Mecatol Rex (at least when I play it), they just come along and *ruin* it.🙎♂️
