- Full episode of 'Life in Six Strings Powered by Music Drives us'. We kick with Def Leppard's Phil Collen where I travel to his home in Laguna Beach to meet him on the beach at 6am, which is how he likes to start his day to help the creative process. I check out his guitar collection and he takes me to the Fender factory to see his new signature Jackson guitar being made. This is all concluded with Phil showing me how to play the Def Leppard track 'Photograph'.
Life in Six Strings is powdered by the charity 'Music Drives Us' which gives the gift of music to under privileged children.

Who doesn't love Phil Collen? Just an absolute Gem of a human being, never mind the guitar playing! Him and all the other guys in Def Leppard, just love 'em to bits. Best band in the world. Thank You Kylie!
He's definitely an example of "doing it right". Collen reminds of my other favorite band Genesis. They're similar where they were appreciative of their careers and where nothing but professionals. No outside nonsense
Phil has achieved a level of world wide fame, fortune, and success that 99.5% of the people in the world could only dream about. The man has more money than his grandkids could ever spend, but he is one of the most polite, respectful and humble human beings you will ever meet. Incredibly talented, respectful, polite and well represented. A lot of very good values and lessons we could all learn from here.
I bought my first Jackson because of Phil Collen! He just keep working!!!! The surviving half of the Terror Twins. A hall of fame Rockstar and a Father!
Whenever any of the band, but especially Phil talk about Steve I always tear up. Steve was the reason I started playing guitar, he was just so cool With the hair and the clothes and the Les Paul slung around his knees. He was a musical genius as well. The band was just never the same without him.
Phil Collen, unbelievable! "Def Lepp's" legend!
One of the most underrated guitarist ever. He's one of my favorites.
I have always loved def Lepp since my early teen years. Was around 12,13 when I first saw them on mtv. Till this very day they are still my favorite band. I am so blessed that I got to see them back in 2005 and was at the front of the stage. Phil played directly in front of me the entire show. I kept giving him the guitar strum motion as to say “can I have a pick?” After his amazing solo, he tossed it right to us and don’t ask me how I caught it. Everyone around me was like can I see it? I was like hell no lol. I would have never seen it again. I still have it to this day one of his metal picks that he used to play. Will cherish it forever. Thank you Phil. This was a great interview. Def Leppard fan forever ❤❤❤❤❤
What an amazing episode. Thank you so much Kylie. PC is an amazing human being
Thank you Rod x
One of my absolute faves! Phil Collen!! Love the show, Kylie!
Great episode! He is a legend with his feet firmly planted on solid ground. A monster player, composer, and performer.
Phil Collen is a top rated player!
I live up pch from Laguna Beach and let me tell you., Phil C has it made. The area is beautiful, totally unattainable, but has so much creative magic in that town. He's so humble and easy going for being one of the biggest rock stars around. That's very cool. Kudos to him and great interview Kylie. Thanks.
Ah thanks for sharing the full show with us! 😁
Phil is ultra cool . . . . . an all-time favorite.
Phil you’re simply the best and coolest….. from one man to another… love ya man…….
I used to run into him and his wife occasionally when I lived in Laguna Beach--he was always pleasant and down to earth
Top guy ❤ him well done sone
I remember three things in my life relating to Def Leppard. I remember where I was when I first heard Pour Some Sugar on Me, which is what led me to buy the album. It was my intro to rock and I've been a rocker/metalhead ever since. I remember the moment I read that Steve Clark had died. I'd been on a training course and it was dark when I got back home. There was a copy of The Sun newspaper on the kitchen table and down the left side of the front page was a small column announcing the news. And I remember what made me want to pick up the guitar. Watching Steve Clark throwing his Les Paul around on the In The Round video. The thing about Def Leppard is that they've all come from humble beginnings and that's given them an appreciation for who they are and what they've achieved without having these massive egos that some people in their position have.
Phil's original Jackson Sig is something I strive fore
Phil is a great player and dude!
BLESS HER HEART, that went rt past her🤣!
Phil is trying his damnedest lol to answer the question that Kylie asked him regarding using the thumb(or not), n she jus dances rt on past with her jolly self(which I love). I don't think she even knew what he was talking about w/ the F chord lol, or she's so excited, that "his answer" was irrelevant no matter what it was😜🤣.
This is such a great program!
I love how Kylie's approach(n her honesty about being a beginner guitar player) takes away the "technical" side of shows like this, which IMHO can be "too technical". I love how she simplifies the conversation n questions, which causes the interview to be relaxed n fun. It's like night n day watching Kylie's interview with Joe Bonamassa vs other interviews from him I've seen. Way to go Kylie! THIS IS how it's done. We get to see a "guard down" side of musicians here, instead of some over thought out interview where the audience is wondering if Richie Blackmore's gonna slap shit out of interviewer n walk out 🤣😂. This is great! I hope we get more shows of this type format in future! Rock on 🎸🎸
Thank you for your comments... I do a mountain of research but always try to approach my interviews like they are just a conversation so pleased that comes across. I've never wanted to get the goss, I've always wanted to explore the process and what they are like as human beings. And its funny you should say that I get them to let their guard down as I was just in Japan with marty Friedman and he said exactly the same and that I make 'guitar' shows more interesting as Im not getting too technical... I have a genuine interest and passion for the guitar but as soon as we get into the technical side of chords and notes my mind blanks lol ... Ive realised I know more than most beginners but worlds apart from the players i'm meeting and would never even try to be like them as it isn't what I do. For me, playing guitar is just therapeutic and I love it for that.
I always love Phil Collen. At 65 years old, he is super powerful and incredible 😊😊😊
Thank you for this lovely interview with my favorite guitar player of all time! What an incredible humble beautiful human. I love you, Phil Collen❤
thank you for watching! He is the best... kylie x
I've only seen Def Leppard once, but it was one of my all-time favorite concerts. Phil is so down to earth. Why can't all rock stars and guitar greats be like Phil. Kylie rocks, too! I'm subscribing right now! Track down Ian Thornley from Big Wreck. Super nice guy and a killer player. Rick Beato interviewed him a while back.
Phil wonderful fantastic accomplishments in your factory sound room and awesome conversation with history love it💥🎸❤️🔥💖🥀🌷⚘️🌹✨️☺️
Phil is such a great guy and player and this was a pleasure to watch.
Bravo Kylie! I've been following LISS since twitch tv so my expectations were really high for this new format!! The long wait brought an AWESOME reward and my expectations were exceeded many times over!! Thank You Kylie!! ❤️🤗🎸xx
what a human being - Phil Collen 🙏
great isn't he.
@@KylieOlsson I have been a DF fan since 1988. It's very hard to come by as humble and down to earth as Phil C is.
One of my absolute guitar hero's It was him and steve on the hysteria album that made me want to play for a reason and all their licks and songs just spoke to me. Yes i have many other favourite guitar players but its phil, steve and viv who have really inspired me. Hope to see them one day and even meet them for a lesson. Descovered them at 12 and im now 28
My first memory of Def Leppard is of watching the " Let it go " music video back when MTV first came out , then I just had to have the union jack shorts and then the muscle shirt , that early stuff ( on through the night ) is still my favorite , I love Phil's Tele Custom Thinline in the Cherry finish , also love his new signature Jackson ( great woodgrain ! ) . Thanks !
Awesome Interview! And Phil? Absolutely great Soul and one of my favorite guitar players. Listening to Def Leppard brings back the best memories of my life 🙂
i have watched a few interviews with Phil. What a gentleman! The hug with Big Rob just made me smile!
This is awesome!!!
Your interviews are always great...thank you.🎼🌹🙂 Phil is not only an absolutely exceptional guitarist and musician, but a very special person. Today you made my day. 👌😘😀🎸🎸🎸🎸
ah thank you so much
@@KylieOlsson thank you 🙂
Phil’s awesome. I hate the hatred he gets by the music community. Hes the best!!! He’s such a nice guy and his singing and guitar playing is superb
I’ve been saying this for years. How can you not like him
@@adamwood7597 People dislike him because they think HE changed Def Leppard’s sound. Which is completely ridiculous and a horrible lie. The sound changed because the band as a unit decided that you can’t blame the change on one man when Mutt Lange is your producer and your song writter and the guy directing you to success. Def Leppard’s change in sound and style has nothing to do with Phil. He just contributed like every other guy in the band. Pete Willis was bad anyways. Never liked him. He was a a** while drunk.
@@WildTaper yes I agree! I think he gets a raw deal. I do like Pete’s work tho on the early stuff. It’s obvious he was a great player. Unfortunately they grew apart due to his drinking and behaviour. I do feel for Pete because he couldn’t hack seeing them live ever again. It’s so very sad that is. Because Phil I think is the right man for the job.
Love the T-Shirt Phil, class 👍👍👍
exactly what I said to him when he walked in ... hahah
Great show and intro! Keep on rockin'!
Thank you Kylie so much for the great interview, Phil is an awesome person and he is a true Guitar Heroe and awesome player. Thumbs up👍 Great Video.😊
You did an amazing job on this! I hope everybody understands the effort you put in. Great job!
Thank you so much for saying that and recognising this! Its been tough making these 8 episodes and also putting myself out there as a beginner and 'playing' with these greats...
My favorite guitar player of all time❤
What a guy and what a band !!!!!!!
Excellent
Great stuff, thanks!
Absolutely loved this, thanks so much Kylie for such a great interview 🎸
thank you james xx
I really like how Phil is communicating - he can listen! Really enjoyable video, thanks a lot!
thank you xx
Great band live.
Love Phil Collen and I have his Jackson PC1, so fun! But @Kylie - what style are your sunglasses? Love them!
This video really makes me want to move to California! Great series Kylie, really enjoying it!
hahaha... i know what you mean!
5:13 yes!! My school friend told me 45 years ago, play chords like you’ve just picked up the guitar by the neck.
Love it! Awesome to interview a Icon!
Great Episode Kylie, Photograph Brings Back Good Memories and What A Beautiful New Jackson Guitar.
thank you rob... i was terrified but Phil was just the sweetest
I love Phil and his playing. I play a Jackson with a super distortion pickup!
Incredible content Kylie. You are an impeccable producer, creator and host with the professional passion, frequency and perfection that created legendary music.
Irene thank you so much... means a lot to hear that xxx
We have been in that room ...it is Awesome !!....it is kind of big and has lights of diffrent colors like in a real stage ..it's also used for meetings for Fender
Steve Clark the true guitar force for DL.
I spotted the Squier Pro Tone Thinlie - fantastic guitar
Really cool show!
Thank you x
Cool.
Love Phil Collen. I hope his new guitar is relatively affordable. I always wanted a PC1. I am not very confident that I will be able to afford his new guitar! I always said, what is the point of creating a new instrument if it is not available to most people.
I follow you now!! Well done Kylie!
thank you Ray... there be more coming every monday x
Phill Colleen, Jon Bon Jovi, it’s incredible to see how healthy and fit they keep themselves. Very inspiring actually.
Phil can still do the job where Jon Boing can’t
very nice person
🤟☆"PHIL"☆🤟
A super nice old dude.
I’m gonna meet him backstage later this year and can’t wait
You won't be disappointed! Tell him you saw my show as we had a blast.
I will, oh my gosh thanks for commenting
Phil the best and Kilye too ...
Ah thank you x
I'm with Phil I miss Steve Clark too.
Thanks Kylie, loved it. If only it were longer 😁 ( that’s what she said)
hahaha... thanks frank... I know, if i start mkaing them just for youtube then they can be longer but these were made for AXS TV in the US so had to stick to their timings...
@@KylieOlsson I assumed it was down to their specifications not you yourself :)
Just have to hope for UA-cam Extended Versions 😉
❤
I love him so much 🙈
Love these vids with the great Phil because he actually is normal.
I just can’t get over with what Kylie says here and the strangest things to him,god knows what Phil actually thinks 😅
I think he thinks it was good as I still speak to him!
Phil Collen wrote and sang so many great songs! Where do I begin? Sussudio, In the Air Tonight, Against All Odds, Take Me Home, Easy Lover
🤣
That was funny when he was showing her how to play guitar.... nice guy....
I wanted to die inside but went with it as did Phil... all of these guitarsist have been great and have gone along with the fun of showing me how to play somthing...
Chefs' Toys is toys for Chefs!
Isn't it funny how most of the greatest guitar ever are self taught
I know, just goes to show you that most of these greats have a natural talent for it.
He should have given her that guitar
I totally agree!!!
Kylie ive just watched this and as a guitar teacher of 30yrs your own teacher is spot on with the use of the thumb behind the neck you only really bring it over for string bending or doing a hendrix ltype chord if you kept it over and wanted to do legato ala joe satriani it would be impossible - listen to your teachef!
I know... i need to be a good pupil 😩
Kylie check out my playing on my chamnel and if you like what i do i will give you a free 40minute Skype lesson ive been playing 43yrs now so youre in safe hands! Lol
I was born in 1970 and around 82 or 83 Pyromania came out at the same time music videos started happening.
DL had a few hits on that album with some videos.
But Hysteria was the biggest album ever ....I'm talking of all time.
Tracks were on the Radio and the videos were on MTV non-stop......For like 2 years.......
People don't seem to remember that these days.
The Big Wigs ran that album into the ground and milked it dry.
It actually made me cringe hearing a cut off of that album.
Def Leppard was bigger than GNR in 87 and 88.
Jackson/Charvel - still making the guitars Fender won't (even though they're owned now, but you get legit headstocks in exchange so it works) ;-)
Phil is simply one of the greats
Guitar teachers should NEVER say something is right or something is wrong, I've done my share of teaching and Never had this attitude! Good technique is always there to be worked on, it never stops, but there is not right or wrong, only options and preferences. IMO
It always freaks me out how they like being in the USA while we would love to live in UK!
hahah... i know, the grass is always greener!
I've never seen Phil Collen with a shirt on before..
Not bad for a geezer from Hackney... :o)
i know! The boy done good...
He's a vegan rock legend!
he certainly is
How does this chick get to meet with all these guys? are they blown away by her 25k subscriber count ?
I haven't just done this show! Ive been working as a TV host for years in rock music and they like the concept of the show.
Someone needs to tell Kylie that Laguna Beach is not Los Angeles or LA county. This is Orange County, CA. They are completely different worlds.
i do say Orange County! At the very beginning
They were in the Fender/Jackson factory in LA, and had to drive thru LA to get back to Laguna.
Corona (Riverside), opposite direction is it not?
every video with Phil he has his shirt off at some point
i know! hahaha... mind you, if i looked that good at his age I probably would.
Look hes got a shirt on
hahaha.
Put a shirt on Phil, gawwwd!
He was swimming....ha ha 😂
You need to talk to Tommy Emmanuel.. the thumb over the neck... it's a thing...
hahah,,, i was talking about gettign him on the show.
Def who?
You need to do me. These guys are great but they’re dinosaurs. I’m next, and I can sing better than any dude out there. 100% God given. If you play your cards right I may even take you out for some dinner or something. I need a good strong muse and you look like you could be her.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Collen is a great guitar player and big poser. "Let's meet at the beach"! Yeah, any excuse to show off his body, which for a 66-year-old man, is admittedly impressive.
Thanks.
