How can anyone criticise Kendrick? In a time where we have everyone singing 'I been selling crack since the 5th grade' we have someone making us sing 'I love myself' and people are still tryna hate. Fuck them.
Nathaniel you are entitled to your opinion but entirely disagree. He may not have the greatest flow and he might not be a battle rapper with 100 punchlines but he carries the fundamental and understanding of hip hop. At least give him credit for being a lyricist speaking uplifting messages in the mainstream game filled with ignorant music
Yea man, why doesn't everyone listen to super positive christian rock with good morals and no negativity? We all just gotta get along, peace and loooove, blast that pharrell yo!
Nathaniel Bugalou No-where did I state that he is one of the greatest. I just really appreciate his music, his lyrical skills, his message and just his general talent. That's what makes a good rapper in my opinion. However you stated that you're not a Hip Hop head so I don't expect you to understand that. Perhaps just stick to these trap beats and rappers that are everywhere these days. They might satisfy you more
Nathaniel Bugalou There's absolutely nothing wrong with constructive criticism but it seemed like you weren't giving him credit where credit is due. He has done alot, there is no-one doing what he is doing on this grand scale. Offering us Hip Hop fans an alternative from the usual. You come across as one of those people who refuse to like someone simply because they've become popular or 'mainstream'. You've said you're a fan and you loved Section 80 but you're just criticising him for the sake of it.
Its different that's why. I didn't like it when I first heard it 2 years ago but now I love this song. There isn't any trap bullshit on this song, so some people(trap dickriders) won't gravitate to it.
Are you kidding me ?... This is next level artistry.... Black excellence at its finest. Kendrick is taking us back...understand this before the Jayz's and Kanye's.. before Tupac and big, before Nas. This is that motown. Marvin Gaye and Earth Wind & Fire feel good music. I appreciate Ronald isley for making an appearance... not to mention, he looks fantastic. . aging very well !! This is something our generation is not used too .. but this is truly a beautiful piece of work. Many have attempted but usually ended up selling out due to lack of support from today's music industry. This is the definition of soul, it's more than just a sound or skin color. I can't wait for the album.
the contrast between i and u is so surreal. abundant joy and confidence in oneself juxtaposed to overwhelming grief and deliberation of suicidal thoughts. the entire album is amazing and the story being told carries well between every song, but these two songs in particular synergize so well.
you know when he says loving u is complicated hes actually talking about loving himself. At the highest point of his life, he loves himself (represented by i), but at the lowest point, he doubts whether he really loves himself and its 'complicated' to love himself. thats why the song titles are both single lowercase letters. its pure genius. the whole track 'u' is talking about how he hates himself which is just the opposite of i. two different points in his life.
5 years ago, I was fired from my job, and I sank into a depression. I was so suffocated by rejections after rejections, and I had a minor thought of committing suicide. This song saved me.
Was about to comment approximately the same thing. I mean I'm at the time of my life where I have to build everything and my life will change drastically next year and I'm so scared and anxious and fighting suicidal thoughts and urges and all that shit.. but I'll be okay eventually, this song helps me remember that. It's so important.
This song also saved me, major bout of depression that lasted a long time, this song legit marks the point where my recovery from that depression started. I listen to Kendrick often but I need to come back to this song now and again and just enjoy it on its own. So happy to hear others feel the same about it. Hope you're all doing good now, keep fighting.
You can call me cringe af but I found this song 2 weeks ago and I can’t get it out of my head whenever I make any mistakes and I used to always let it get in my head and now I let everything go so easy so thank you so much for piece of art has given me happiness and joy can’t thank you enough Kendrick❤️

BigQuint's Hairline I am not black. Kendrick has been my favorite artist since my high school days. I remember going to high school everyday depressed and stressed because of problems but everyday there i was listening to Overly Dedicated, Section 80 and GKMC; those albums saved my life. ***** Don't you think that's a bit racist, they don't have to be successful to be good people, I know many unsuccessful people yet they are good people full of loyalty and love.
Yo anyone saying this song is a "sellout" or done just to be "mainstream" is either stupid, watching the video with their eyes closed, or both. A song that's trying to become mainstream will dip into the white community more just to reach a larger audience, while you can tell this video had a completely urban setting. And there's nothing mainstream about that last verse at all, I definately don't hear stuff like that in ANY pop song ever. And I'm not even a Kendrick fan
friður Well for one, you can literally just count the number of white people in the video compared to black, I counted 4, and 2 of them were two police officers arresting a black male, go figure. Even despite that, the feel of the video that was shot in the ghetto just feels very urban. There's nothing wrong with mainstream songs trying to get the relatability of the white/middle class community, but I'm saying this song does not even do that, the song is just so far from mainstream or a sellout song and people are just saying it's one simply because it made it to the radio
From listening to this at 15 or 16 wanting to commit suicide to now at 21 years old a year and three months into addiction recovery with no desire to kill myself. This song came into my life at such a crucial point, and it'll stay with me forever.

Thats why I have so much respect for KDot, he's using his music to deliver messages and to connect with his listeners.. Making hip hop better one song at a time KING KENDRICK

I love how this song is about how in order to love yourself, you need to surrender yourself to the outside world, even the ugly parts. you can't put up walls and expect to be happy. in a weird way, this feels like the modern equivalent to simon and garfunkel's "I am a rock", except instead of the theme being implied through subtext, it's directly addressed in a really beautiful way. the part at the end where kendrick is hanging out the window of his car like the joker, perfectly supports the story kendrick is trying tell.

I love how Kendrick is more than just a Hip Hop artist. He's a great poet, and he knows exactly how to paint a picture vivid enough for us all to be aware of what's going on in our communities, let alone the world we live in. I hope I can one day be a Hip Hop artist as great as K.Dot is.
Kendrick is the artist we need in this generation of hip hop in my opinion. He reminds me of Pac in a lot of ways and I just love what he's doing with his music.
What are you talking about? Kendrick grew up in Compton surrounded by gangs and murderers. Just because he was smart enough not to get involved doesn't mean he never experienced all that shit. Pac's life was only on the line because he did that to himself. If he was smart, he would've gotten out of that gang shit.

Yeah artist from TDE are famous for putting snippets of beats at the beginning of videos, examples include in ab souls illuminate video it has the beat to a rebellion at the beginning and Kendrick's poetic justice video has a snippet of sherane aka master printer's daughter at the beginning

Nathaniel Bugalou
No-where did I state that he is one of the greatest. I just really appreciate his music, his lyrical skills, his message and just his general talent. That's what makes a good rapper in my opinion. However you stated that you're not a Hip Hop head so I don't expect you to understand that. Perhaps just stick to these trap beats and rappers that are everywhere these days. They might satisfy you more
Nathaniel Bugalou
There's absolutely nothing wrong with constructive criticism but it seemed like you weren't giving him credit where credit is due.
Nathaniel Bugalou not that good. Gtfo
Why would people hate this song? It's such a good kendrick song.

El
u put a video idea of mine into words, im working on a project with the two telling my story
you know when he says loving u is complicated hes actually talking about loving himself.

If there is an anti-suicide song, this is it.

BigQuint's Hairline I am not black. Kendrick has been my favorite artist since my high school days. I remember going to high school everyday depressed and stressed because of problems but everyday there i was listening to Overly Dedicated, Section 80 and GKMC; those albums saved my life. I used to be very depressed thinking about suicide everyday but one man changed me, thought me alot of things. Now i'm rarely depressed since all he has thought me. TPAB is saving me in the current days. I'm fucked up, homie, u fucked up but if God got us then we gon' be ALRIGHT!

Simon6621HD Not all people, not all.
Fr man people gotta realize that
Tbh, half the people who say that about this song have probably never listened to the Isleys a day in their lifetimes.
Good point
What do you mean white community you mean wealthy because their is whites in urban areas too
friður Well for one, you can literally just count the number of white people in the video compared to black, I counted 4, and 2 of them were two police officers arresting a black male, go figure.
This one song saved my life. Literally!

Lyrics (from Genius):
“[Intro]
I done been through a whole lot
Trial, tribulation, but I know God
Satan wanna put me in a bow tie
Pray that the holy water don't go dry
As I look around me
So many motherfuckers wanna down me
But an enemigo never drown me
In front of a dirty double-mirror they found me
[Chorus]
And I love myself
(The world is a ghetto with big guns and picket signs)
I love myself
(But it can do what it want whenever it want, I don't mind)
I love myself
(He said I gotta get up, life is more than suicide)
I love my... self
(One day at a time, sun gonna shine)
[Verse 1]
Everybody lookin' at you crazy (crazy!)
What you gonna do? (what you gonna do?)
Lift up your head and keep moving (keep moving)
Or let the paranoia haunt you (haunt you)?
Peace to fashion police, I wear my heart
On my sleeve, let the runway start
You know the miserable do love company
What do you want from me and my scars?
Everybody lack confidence, everybody lack confidence
How many times my potential was anonymous?
How many times the city making me promises?
So I promise this
[Chorus]
I love myself
(The world is a ghetto with big guns and picket signs)
I love myself
(But it can do what it want whenever it want, I don't mind)
I love myself
(He said I gotta get up, life is more than suicide)
I love my... self
(One day at a time, sun gonna shine)
[Verse 2]
They wanna say it's a war outside and a bomb in the street
And a gun in the hood, and a mob of police
And a rock on the corner, and a line for the fiend
And a bottle full of lean, and a model on the scene, yup
These days of frustration keep y'all on tuck and rotation
I duck these cold faces, post up fi-fie-fo-fum basis
Dreams of reality's peace
Blow steam in the face of the beast
The sky could fall down, the wind could cry now
The strong in me, I still smile
[Chorus]
I love myself
(The world is a ghetto with big guns and picket signs)
I love myself
(But it can do what it want whenever it want, I don't mind)
I love myself
(He said I gotta get up, life is more than suicide)
I love my... self
(One day at a time, sun gonna shine)
[Bridge]
Walk my bare feet (walk my bare feet)
Down, down valley deep (down, down valley deep)
Fi-fie-fo-fum (fi-fie-fo-fum) (I love myself)
My heart undone (my heart undone) (I love myself)
[Hook]
The world is a ghetto with big guns and picket signs
(I love myself)
But it can do what it want whenever it want, I don't mind
(I love myself)
He said I gotta get up, life is more than suicide
(I love my... self)
One day at a time, sun gonna shine
(Hold up)
[Verse 3]
I went to war last night
With an automatic weapon, don't nobody call a medic
I'ma do it 'til I get it right
I went to war last night
I've been dealing with depression ever since an adolescent
Duckin' every other blessin', I can never see the message
I could never take the lead, I could never bob and weave
From a negative and letting them annihilate me
And it's evident I'm moving at a meteor speed
Finna run into a building, lay my body in the street
Keep my money in the ceiling, let my mama know I'm free
Give my story to the children and a lesson they can read
And the glory to the feeling of the holy unseen
Seen enough, make a motherfucker scream, "I love myself!"
[Outro]
I lost my head
I must've misread what the good book said
Oh, woes keep me, it's a jungle inside
Give myself again 'til the well runs dry”
thank u
Thanks for lyrics
