After doing some research, I found out if you drive in heavy rain or the battery terminals otherwise experience high humidity, it will send a fault to the k-bus located behind the fuse box that should say something like “negative battery terminal disconnected” even though this isn’t true. And this fault is what causes all the random electrical issues. My a/c, dash lights, power mirrors, and trunk button stopped working all around the same time. And this was during a long road trip where I ran into heavy rain in certain areas. The solution: pay a stealership $300 to reset the k-bus OR simply disconnect both the positive and negative battery terminals for several hours. I’m trying this solution right now and it has worked for many other people that have this problem.
I happened something similar my passenger's glass stayed a little below and little water was put in, the a/c only marks me in f and does not come out cold and the dashboard does not mark me lights, or fog lights, directional and intermittent and change the fuses that were in good condition and disconnect the battery and continues the same, I just removed the positive ma battery because you see that should only be that if everything worked again
Hi All, at the beginning, thank you JQ for posting this clip. Unfortunately it did not help me out in this situation, but I found 2 more solutions of this issue. I hope one of those will help someone out. 1st: take you key and turn the ignition to 1st position. Then open your fusebox which can be found in the glovebox. Take out and insert back fuses number 10, 34 and 43. When I did that with 10th fuse my dashbord woke up and the steper motors for each gauge started to work. 2nd solution I found, but I did not test it was to unplug positive lead out of your battery for the night. Then reconnect it back. This should bleed out all capacitors and reset all modules. If after one of those procedures you will have ABS and DSC yellow indicators on, just take a short ride. Car will have to re-establish comunications with ABS sensor. I hope my solutions will help someone. Peace out!
Had the same issue for a while and the problem was after all I did the mechanic did for me case was a simple by luck fix I even took the radio out put original back called a coding guy long story short my problem was driver side door connection to the body it happens when it rains was loose took it apart cleaned it and problem was solved by the way I read all comments here and tried all of them hope that helps I know it’s frustrating but it’s working thanks to the guy posted the video of hay helped me and now I hope I can help others
I had the same issue and was able to resolve this be cutting and bypassing the K-bus wire (white w/ gray stripe and yellow dashes) from Pin 7 on the back of the radio connector to the other side of the connector shown in this video. On the one side the wire is the same as above, on the other it is white w/ a red stripe and yellow dashes and that should go to the k-bus above the fuse box. I made a parch wire from Pin 7 to the white/red/yellow side of the connector here and everything including the radio works fine. Hope that helps!!
hi, mine just started doing the same thing. Im a confused about what you did with the two adjacent wires. Did you bridge the grey strip and red strip wire and what is a parch wire. I googled it but didnt seem to have any luck.
I do not have any current and I do not have the main beam headlamp I can not help with my K-bus wire (white w / gray stripe and yellow dashes) or can I help you with a video to solve the problem?
I had this exact issue with the exception my top wouldn't operate at all as well. THANK YOU FOR THIS POST!!! NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT TO BE THE #$@&ING RADIO!!!!!
Hey Catez did this fix your problem? I have the same problem as you, No turn signal, hazzard flash, A/c or sun roof top operations. But disconnecting the radio didn't fix my problem
Dude, I have the problem that my instrument cluster is going crazy, it first happened 2 months ago with a light indicator on right headlight, but my headlight still good but sometimes it's blinking, then a month later my cluster going worse, when the gauge engine at the middle (engine running for a while) my cluster start showing the gearbox light, but I feel that my shifting is good, and at the clock instruments going so messy. and now when I run the car and engine is on that temperature, my cluster show battery indicator and finally, my cluster is dead. And then i watch so much video that most of them suggest to DC the battery and I done it, when I instal the battery again everything is normal until I drive the car and the gauge on the engine heat reach the middle, the battery light comes again and then my instrument cluster is totally dead, but I still can start the engine without any light come on the cluster, I've check battery voltage when engine not running and it's 13V and when the engine running it's 14V and it doesn't drop even I turn on the headlight, music, and AC (can't do cold blow) My car still can do a crank and start but I was so scared driving without any lights on the cluster. Anyone, please help me :( BMW E46 318i 2003 with N42 engine
Having a similar issue, I think mine is related to my drivers door lock actuator though. When I open my door or simulate a door closed with a screwdriver there cluster lights up and all functions on cluster work. I believe my contacts are worn in the actuator and I’m getting an intermittent door ajar, I will change the part and update

I never had a problem before this flat battery , I have now replaced the battery and still nothing works ? any ideas thank you
Hello ! I also have this similar problem, only the controls on the steering wheel and the pdc sensors do not work for me, can someone help me please? Thank you !
Thanks! This worked for me. So it looks like a loose wiring from the old ipod connection. Did you ever figure out how to get the radio working/what wiring to replace?
Thank you for sharing, this video was really helpful to troubleshoot my problem. Had the same problem with an E46 Coupe with navigation. No dash lights, no ac, locks will work only sometimes, blinkers will not light up on the dash. I happen to research a little more since I had a K can bus 87 dtc on the diagnosis. I couldnt access any module But motor, cluster and steering angle sensor. It happen to be an interference on the can communication due to the CD 6 unit of the car that is inside the trunk. I disconnected it and the radio was working normally again I guess I can't play CDs anymore unless I get another one. Thank you so much
@@alinosan5251 yes, the problem was in bad connection on key ignition module (where you put your key to start the car) . Some guy bypassed my bad connection directly for 5 euros. (Insted of key ignition module to 12v supply. Hope this helps you.
Thank you for this great and useful info, I just fixed my car today doing the same plus resetting the system by disconnecting the battery and using WD 40 penetrator on all the fuses.
I have the same exact car/options (production date SEP '03) with the same problems: No dash back-lighting, No turn-signals, No A/C. However, when I disassembled the dash, there was no additional 'plug' adjacent to the main harness that connects to the radio. Have you been able to further diagnose the underlying problem and get your radio back online? Thanks!
I have tried a couple time to reconnect the radio and get it all working together, but, each time, it would work for a little while and then the issues would start all over again. I have since sold the car. The buyer was going to try an after market radio. If I hear any results from him, I will post it.

hey guys, HAVE a big issue with my car, my indicators and high bean somtimes dont work on the dash, but works from the front, you think its a bad cluster or LCM?
My turn signals don’t even turn on and they don’t turn on in the dash as well as my hazards and dash light, I have an android head unit in there which may cause the issue but my ac works, windshield wipers do as well
Did you ever figure out which component on the bus was causing the error? If you look at that connector one side is white/yellow/gray and it goes into a brown/red wire. For the life of me, I can't find a wiring diagram that shows that connector. I'd sure would love to know the solution.
So, I have been troubleshooting this. So the white/yellow is KBUS. Should be 5V signal wire. I metered mine and it has 12v on the female side of that connector. Now to find that connector in WDS and see where the other end is. I'm betting the persons that tried an aftermarket radio killed it.
@@beedubya greetings, how did you resolved? my car is doing exactly the same. At few years ago, i´ve installed an ipod connector, could it be that the cause too?
@@rconteiro I did find the issue today. I had to take the AC controls out and pull all of the radio harness out of the dash to find it. The issue was the SVideo/Data connector had a short that was grounding the KBus. When you pull the wiring out, you'll see this connector. Pull back the cloth tape and you'll see where the KBus runs into a factory butt connector. This is where that 3 pin connector on the male end feeds to. It branches back to the radio and to this round Svideo/Data connector. I ohmed it out and the ground side of data plug was bleeding through to the Kbus. I clipped the wire to the connector and pulled it all back in. 100% back in business. It was shorted in the connector!! Happy to have it all back together.
