Masa, do you know of any guides in Akita prefecture that would accomodate foreigner visitor? I very much want to catch yamame or iwana in Akita possibly in March this year and I am searching for any local guides. I fish BFS but can also do fly fishing or spin fishing, whatever. Thank you.

However, I should let you know that, unlike in Western countries, the culture of fishing guides is not yet fully established here. Unfortunately, it’s difficult for me to recommend a skilled fishing guide in Akita. Additionally, March is still too early for fishing in Akita. It’s a heavy snow region, and temperatures remain very low at that time. This year, especially, there has been an unusual amount of snowfall, so the fishing season will likely start around June, with July and August being the best months. If you’re planning to fish in March, I recommend heading to a warmer region like Kyushu. Specifically, the Gokase River system in Miyazaki Prefecture and its surrounding areas are perfect for fishing yamame and other species. Kyushu is located in southern Japan, and the warmer climate makes it ideal for fishing as early as March. If you have any questions or need further advice, please feel free to reach out anytime.
