So many still have design from like 20 years ago ugh. Which of the more modern looking ones do you think you'd trust the most with decent long term support? Ideally a team that's been around for a while and not super tiny? bb press/buddy press are too ugly for me. Simple:Press looks interesting but really small team which makes me nervous.
The team size is not always everything, a good small team can still make a great plugin. It would depend on the design you are looking for but themes would normally change the styling of the forum if it has styling for it.

WPForo is not a security plugin, it should not be any less secure than other forum plugins if that is what you're concerned about.
