If I am going to put tile do I have to completely cover all the corners and sides? I ask you because I see in the video spaces that were left uncover. Thank you very much and have a nice day.
I really like your videos and You inspired me to level my basement. I need to lift it 2.5” from the center, we did first layer 1.5” with aggregate clean pean gravel raked aggressively, of course primed first. How would you advise bast way to lay the second layer? Thanks
I used Mapei ultraplan 1 plus, I followed manufacturer direction precisely, they said that this can be used to lift up to 3.5”. After the first layer I now have about 400sq to level on a second layer to do in 15 minutes before the compound start to harden. How would you lay the second layer with deeper section in the middle. Thanks for your response
I have a painted concrete garage floor but would like it smooth like this , can I put this straight on top after the primer , or do I need to remove the paint
wow great video! i was about to start installing my hardwood floor when my neighbor told me to check for gaps using the same tool your using in the vid and sure enough i found a few gaps, when he told me it was easy i was hesitant but so far I have done texture, paint, tile removal myself so why stop there, searching on youtube, see several different methods, great ones but looks like they have the crew to do it, this video was exactly what i was looking for and cant wait to get started, thanks again!
MrYoucandoityourself thanks sir! just a quick question, before I move forward with this, i removed the tile adhesive, (what a pain) from my entrance, 4x4 give or take, and smoothed it out the best i could, but its not perfect, have you ever experienced any issues pouring the compund over a surface like mine or similar?
Nice video, but I have a few questions. If you're going to do a large area at once (living room, dining area, hallway, closet, foyer, etc), how do you map out the area? How do you figure out the highs and lows as well as the highest point of the whole floor area? Where do you start? If you use self-leveling compound in one floor area, and you're going to do the whole house with the same tile, wouldn't you have to use it all through the rest of the house? How do you guarantee that all of the floors will end up being the same height? Thank you for your time.
What made you think that this music would be more helpful than natural sounds of you doing this work; or you talking through what you are doing, experiencing and describing what is challenging? I'm just curious of your thought processes.
@@MrYoucandoityourself Good job. nNtural sound is lovely, and I didn't realize how important it is unless the natural sound is nothing but droning sounds of loud machinery. I have videos on my channel that cover the activity with music, but I felt like the activity had no useful sounds at all. I guess I should practice what i preach.
When you are leveling with the straight edge how much height are you adding to the floor level ? What is the thickness of the SL after it is applied? Thanks
If this is a DIY project and you haven't used a self leveling underlayment before I'd strongly recommend using an extended setting underlayment instead of the typical RS (rapid setting) sold at most hardware stores. You might pay more for the product but it will give you more time to work it, which is critical if you're a novice and especially important if don't have other people helping you.
If I plan on using a grinder on the high spots and leveler on the low spots, which order should I do them in? I was thinking maybe use the grinder first so that the leveler will adhere better to the virgin surface?
Excellent videos. Gave me the confidence to take on a bigger job in the house... out of curiosity, have you added extra liquid? I find that sometimes it sets off too quick or the material is too thick before I can get the pin roller in. I've used both latex and water based compounds.
Nice Video...I think its a real shame when people make comments like .." lame music"...or "..thats not how you do it..etc" I personally have learned a lot from your videos and am people should be grateful that you are providing such videos. Heck you can play Beethoven or Metallica for all I care ! People mute it and watch it for the technique
This type of leveling compound is listed as 'temporary traffic' only on the bags. This is designed to be covered. You probably want something else like an epoxy floor if you are looking for a finished floor.
bukurie gashi You can lay an engineered hardwood floor using glue-down installation method. In this case you should use an adhesive. If you are going to lay floating floor you need to install an underlayment first.
Good video, thank you. One question; Do you know if it's possible to lay a latex screed directly over a tiled floor? I would like to cover the existing tiles with a lino strip floor and trying to avoid gunning it all up first...... Cheers
What is he using for a guide. Walls should be marked with a target to level to or you have to screed the whole distance at once. I self-leveled and when you do big entire areas you had better have a lot of leveler to pour all at once.
MrYoucandoityourself ... thx for your fast response. I was just going to do the 5 foot by 3 foot dip it is like a fish bowl. I also read on plywood there is a minimum of 1/2 inch do u see any problems. I will float to less then that obviously to level to high side. Keep up the great videos
+Jacob Bowman I got it from the store for the concrete and tile accessories. You can work with this roller only the first 20-25 min after you put self-leveling.
Concrete getting solid in 1.5 -2 hours. Time to use spike roller not longer than 25 min, because self leveling compound will settle down. Thanks for watching!
You can buy it in any tile store, 10 fit. When you go for buying, take 2 or 3. Put them together, and check which one is more straight. Because not all str.edge is really straight.
A roller actually evens the floor out. If you ever want to get a wall perfectly even use a roller to apply the sheet rock mud to the wall. Roll more mud where the shadows are to make them disappear.
Also one major issue not mentioned here. There is a minimum thickness you should apply levelling compound. If you are literally scraping it across the floor less than 3mm thick it dries with no strength like egg shell and could come off; Particularly important if flooring needs adhering to the surface like LVT. This is the primary task in my job. We achieve flat, level smooth and strong latexed surfaces for the flooring industry using a surface laser level. Its literally the only way to do it properly.
Isn't the whole point of self-levelling compound that it, well, self-levels? All you need to do is pour and give it a quick spread about to let it flow?
Hi Joku, good question! If you not experienced person in leveling job - not a problem. Take grinder and cut off little bumps. I'm doing it time to times too. Multiple coats - if need it, just do it. Thanks for watching my friend!
MrYoucandoityourself I really enjoy your videos and you're highly skilled. I tried to copy you and used a 10ft 2x4, but my floor is wavy now. I tried to grind down a high spot and the amount of dust that flew out was way too much for me. I wish there was an easier way to do this.
thanks for sharing, i was thinkiing this was relatively easy because edges were higher and the middle dipped, but thats not always going to be the case. so if the middle peaked, and edges dipped, I can understand cutting level timber rails at the edges (cut to follow floor- (which takes some skill with a level, scribe and saw) but thats not whats happening or explaine here . sorry not being smart, just trying to digest and understand
Correct. This method fills a dip but doesn't level over multiple dips. You need to level the entire floor with a coat 3mm higher than the highest point. We do this professionally. I appreciate this video but it's impractical.
This video is informative but it only shows how to fill a void, not level a floor. To level a floor properly takes time, money and a lot of skill. You have to flood the entire floor at least 3mm higher than the highest point, using a stand up rake and trowel. Also, the primer should be applied using a broom, not roller. The roller won't get into cracks etc and the subfloor should be ground back to rough it up for substance e. g. paint to be removed and good primer bonding. Ardex is the best possible product, not Mapei. They're cheap but they don't offer a 10 year guarantee. Ardex are the only ones that do. Great gap filling though.
Or you could invest in a floor surface laser level (Such as the Bosch GSL2) and do it properly. This is useless because if the floor is not level around the outside then the straight edge will follow that contour. A said already flat doesn't mean level.
Hot tip, just get a good concretor. All this is then unnecessary. Cleaning prior to priming using a broom is useless unless you vacuum afterwards it leaves a lot of fine dust which the primer is then sitting on. Also with your priming, check with the manufacturer specs but with most by pouring it on the primer can go on too thick and delaminate from itself.
MrYoucandoityourself Thanks... Quick question. When a concrete floor is uneven more than a inch can I still use the self leveling compound? Do you have like a video of how to level a floor like this? Thanks
I'm watching this and, yeah, it's flat but it wasn't that far out to begin with. With tile, extra mortar would have taken up the slack. Carpet and hardwood/engineered flooring you wouldn't have noticed...well nothing a few very thin shims wouldn't have fixed. I'm guessing this is for the perfectionists out there. Or maybe lino, but if your using lino you're...frugal...yeah that's the term...so you wouldn't be spending money on flattening. You should see my basement. It's out 2 inches in places. That's too much for leveling compound so I'm wondering what the hell I'm going to do.
You're constantly picking two random points of the floor where the two screed edges land. Now unless your floor is perfectly level (which would defeat the purpose of this process) your finished screed work will follow those random points. Your chances of resulting in a leveled floor using this method are not good at all. It's like one in a million (so you're telling me there's a chance!)
this is shocking, you will not level anything just get rid of dips here and there. whats the point in putting tape 6 inch above the floor?youd be better of screeding the whole floor with a trowel throw that straight edge away its no good for self leveling screeds. floor layer 20 years experiance
I have done leveling with couple of different methods and recently have used this techniques. Results have been Perfect. I strongly recommend.
Hi Markus, thanks for you positive comment!
You should show a close up of your tools you are using like the spike roller.

try using the sound volume button on your device - it is a great feature.

I'm about to do this to even a dip in my hallway. The instructions call for metal lathe over my plywood floor, is this necessary?

Hi Luis, of course, spiked roller spread leveling compound and makes it flat but not much.
what's a good material for checking level? stud? molding? I don't want to spend $100 on a 8' level.
The cheapest tool is a rope. Put it from one corner to another (diagonal) and pull on. You can find all imperfections.

Come to UK I`ll show you some uneven subfloors ;]]]
I am waiting for flight ticket from you :)
I was expecting Carlos Santana to come out at any minute with a trowel, was there any need for the distracting samba music???

You really shoud take that straight edge and show us how good that sublfloor is once it`s dry....
I done it in my other video: ua-cam.com/video/DPPv92A-GTk/v-deo.html
learned alot today. Nicley done!

Work and dance in the same time!
Maybe this video will help you - ua-cam.com/video/-Z-ZpF7oJv4/v-deo.html

+tikrasseo It is shiny because it is wet.
+MrYoucandoityourself What can I say... That was dumb of me to think concrete will look like this :D
+tikrasseo I'm pretty sure you can stain and polish concrete floors to look shiny
It looks shiny because it wet. When it drys, the floor looks mate :)
I feel like dancing.....lol

you do realize the paper dust mask does not stop chemicals from entering your lungs !!!
+tisiluca Yes, I do.
"Delete the dust" really?
With that roller you unleveled the floor again.
It's a spiked roller, and self levelling concrete will self level before it dries anyway. The straigh edge is for spreading.
The spiked roller gets air bubbles out..
thank you, i was trying to figure that out as the video didn't show any air pockets.
