Very interesting. I haven't thought about it before except that I'm not a big fan of neon colors. I suffer occasional strong headaches and those colors are like someone is screaming at me or like fingernails on a chalkboard, almost painful. I'm realizing that how I feel physically greatly affects the colors that please me on that particular day. Generally I like no more that 3 or 4 colors in a project. That said I have made a couple scrapghans that I find delightful...depending on my mood. I think I could write a whole book on this, LOL...someone probably already has. Isn't God amazing to fill our world with so much variety and beauty...and COLOR! I like to take inspiration from His works, flowers, birds, even fish. 🐠🌹🌷🐠
I love this video! I’m so glad you talked about this topic of color that I agree is frequently overlooked. Thank you for sharing about Adobe Color, which looks like an extremely useful resource for choosing yarn colors. But I also love your method of simply choosing the colors that bring you joy!
Wonderful! Yes, Adobe Color is so useful and easy to use! It took me many years to learn why I felt good or bad when I was making something, that it was largely the colours!
Thank you for sharing your colourful scarf, I like it better than the colours that you were sent by the magazine. Thank you for sharing how you chose colours for a project.
This is helpful in many ways. I have a bunch of single skeins that I’d like to stripe or color block in sweaters. Your method of laying them in a bunch and taking out or leaving in by how it makes you feel and how they look together will perfect. Thank you!
I find myself gravitating toward my favorite color - purple! So as long as it looks good with purple, I'm a happy girl. If someone asks for something specific, I will use the colors they select to make them happy. For example, when making a baby blanket for a mom-to-be, and she has a color she hates or wants something to match the nursery, then I go with what she wants. But I also crochet for Project Linus, and can use colors that make me happy to work with.
I love the process used to select 4 colors, and I like the ones you chose, even though I expect you'd keep the yellow. I have many times stood in the yarn aisle (particularly with cotton) and held skeins together, solids and variegated, and then have to decide which I can afford to buy and which I must put back. 😆
Wow! 😮 kudos to you!!!! I didn’t realize your patterns were in a magazine!!! Love that!!!! I love colors too …mostly pastels. But my house is ALSO in gray and white!! Your daughter has a beautiful home ( of what I saw of it) ❤❤ you are always sooo informative!! Thank you!!😊🧶🧶
The Adobe tool is a great tip! I always learn something new from your videos 😊 I only buy the colours I like, which tend to be purples, burgundy, cobalt or dark blues, teals/turquoise supported by some neutrals of browns, greys, some black and white or cream varieties. You'll unlikely find many yellows, oranges, or baby pinks in my wardrobe or my yarn collection 🧶
That's a cute dress and shawl you have on today, Tuula. Interesting video. I know when I see colors I like, but I've never thought about it quite like you presented it today. Blessings to you.
Fascinating article. Ty Tuula- as they say you "crushed" it. The miniature work i do is very pale to faded shades so it matches the antique dolls its made and designed for. Nice enough but not my personal prefs. Anything crocheted for myself to wear is rigourously Puritanical bc of my size- black, dark grey, charchol, navy, chocolate and van Dyke browns. My tastes however side with yr pallette bright, fresh, clean and strong colours are my favs. My second prefs when thinner are for warm earthy, autumnal shades.
@@TuulaMaaria so i have heard. And then there is having the courage to wear bold colours. You must not think i "suffer" for my choices- my skin tone colour changed in my mid fifties going from a lifetime of skimmed-milk blue white to a rosey pink. Together with silver white hair those dark Puritanical colours are very flattering. Bemusing.
You just figured out why I can’t get this poncho done for my daughter in law!! It’s all in basic blue. It’s pretty but not colorful for my hands and mind to be happy. My apartment is in neutral colors. I am still new at yarn work but developed a stash over 2020. Still working on projects that will EVENTUALLY change my living space.😊
I thought that I was the only one that loved all bright colors..if I wear a black I put on a bright yellow or orange or hot pink to bring the black to pop.❤
Lots of people love strong bright colours I see them a lot because I have on purpose selected so many to follow on Instagram who only work with strong colours.
This was fascinating, Tuula. I make a lot of things for others, and I try to use colors that I think they’ll like. I was really sick last summer, and I just couldn’t work on the projects I had started. I bought some really soft yellow yarn, and I felt better immediately. Thanks for another great video.
I love this video so much it made me realise why I hated the project I am working on! It’s grey and it’s really draining me since I love rich and bright colours! I’ll finish it since it’s for a gift lol but I won’t be working with grey for a long time after!!! I found this video so useful and informative. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts I’m definitely going to use that colour picking site ❤ Have a lovely weekend!
❤color, and playing with color. I told my husband the other day that sometimes I just have to get hold of a yarn and get going because I want to work with the color.
Oh, colours and their shades have a tremendous effect on me, and this subject is something I think about every day. For one thing, almost all greens make me feel good in nature, especially if the light is the "right" shade - after all sunlight varies between very cold and quite a warm orange. But far from all those greens make me happy on photographs of the same landscape, let alone on yarn or walls. There's so much to say on this... Just an anecdote: After returning from months by the Mediterranean I couldn't stand the neutrals in my Swedish home and rushed to liven up the decor. With time, however, my home turned more and more "natural" again - without grey, though. Greys can really put me down. Thus, there seems to be a geographical factor too, and a getting-used-to kind of thing. (Or I got depressed in Sweden without noticing😅) Anyway, as far as I'm concerned you are very welcome to make more videos on this fascinating topic. Thank you Tuula - and oh, the colours in your videos are one reason I watch them even though I don't choose the same shades for my work. Again, it's the difference between whether a particular shade of colour is seen in one context (video) or another (actual yarn).
Thank you for sharing! You are right, probably the geographical location also affects how people see colour, and what you are used to! I forgot to mention on the video that my mother used very strong colours in my childhood home, I was going to add a couple of photos but only remembered after I had published the video! I'm the same with some greys but not all. In one of our homes, there was a cold grey wallpaper that you were not allowed to paint over and that was depressing!
Thank you so much, I really enjoyed this. The only store with a large collection of yarn to choose from is a good 3 hour drive away so I rarely ever get to go there. So I get disappointed sometimes as I have to order on line and they are not always the colour I am expecting, it’s hard sometimes also when you get a family request and they show you what colours, I want to please them but I don’t always enjoy working the project , so I totally agree with you.
I was thinking of those who don't have yarn stores near-by but then didn't bring that up on the video. At times I order online too and often the colours are not what I expected!
This was very helpful. The color wheel was new to me. I will have to play with that. I feel I struggle with colors but you give me confidence in that it’s how it makes you feel not what society says it should be.
I'm definitely a color person, not so much into neutrals and brown is my least favorite. So what to do when your brother requests a bedspread sized brown afghan? Patterns. I created a pattern using brown, off white / ecru and variegated yarn, along with a quick easy repeatable stitch that actually made the item fun to do and beautiful in the end. Now I want to create the same afghan, but with color this time (purple or pink) 😊
Thank you Tuula. I really enjoyed this video. I too are very affected by colors. I plan to make a log cabin crochet blanket for my sister in law and made the mistake of asking her what her five favorite colors are. Black, white, green, orange and gold. I bought the yarn and it’s still in the bag a month later! I have to be in the mood to try and put them together. She is a very skilled quilter so I must do my best to make those colors “ vibe” together.
Good day to you!! I agree with you 100% regarding colors and what really will complement with each other!! I am not a bright color kinda person, so selecting the color coordination is very important and how it makes me feel. Thank you for your videos!!😊
I love bright cheerful colours and also pastels, they make me feel cheerful. I NEVER use browns, beiges, stone, mustards, olives, they actually make me feel sad. If I buy a pattern that offers a yarn pack I always swap some of the colours, sometimes not the actual colour, just shades.
I am really affected by colors! Fun how different we chose colors. I should never put together the colors you chosed. My summercolors mix corallred, light lemon, light greygreen and cream. Or jeansblue, lightblue, lightlightturquise and lightrose. Strong bold colors like lime, orange, tomatored, yellow YES! If I could afford it I should have a wardrobe arranged as a rainbow!! I feel I need many colors and I need black too. I love to wear black in the winter and put statement earing in a bold color to the outfit or necklace etc But I hate to crochet/knit in black.Hard to see the black stitches. It makes me happy crocheting in strong colors like grassgreen. Love this topic!
I like the colors you chose except I would have kept the yellow instead of the green and even kept the pale pink also. But of course purple, yellow, and pink are my favorite colors. I like the color you are wearing.
I couldn’t agree with you more,..colrs have always affected me emotionally…all you have to do is look at my yarn stash to know that I love light, happy colors,…sunshine,…and soothing pastels, quiet and peace,…and woodsy,..nature and this gorgeous world. Not to say I don’t Love..with just my eyes,…navy, red, and my favorite, don’t laugh,…all Shades of Brown…chocolate, toffee, mocha, butterscotch, hazelnut, pecan,…etc…😂😂😂. But I never have neverthought about doing the little exercise that you did…other than when I did a temperature blanket…thank you, Tula!
I love your videos ❤ I always choose colours for a project that give me a feel-good vibe. It is an interesting and positive brain storming session. However I take care not to repeat the same hues again and again. Colours are a personal preference and I don't always expect others to like mine🎉
Thank you Tuula Marie ~ very thoughtful and good to raise our awareness of color as we crochet. I always enjoy your videos. Much affection from Portland Oregon.
I LUV COLOR!! I really am pulled to the brighter colors but I also like monochromatic as well. It depends on what I am making. I’m like a kid in a candy store when I see yarn. I want them all. You will find things for me and my home are brights and a bright with complimentary. I do like you-pick the best out of pile! Thank you!
What great timing for this video! I normally am drawn to very rich, saturated colors - jewel tones especially. But this week my yarn store had a sale, so I stopped in to pick up yarn for a project I wanted to do. I spotted and fell in love with a yarn that’s the complete opposite - a heather mix of soft peach, tan, light blue, and light grey. I’ve already made it through the first skein, and luckily it’s as beautiful worked up as I hoped. It looks soft, warm, cozy, and soothing. And your story about the magazine scarf reminded me of when I was making a lap blanket for a friend. She chose a few very dark and drab colors, ones I’d never pick on my own. I didn’t really enjoy working on that blanket, but she loved it, so it was worth working with those depressing (to me) colors. Thank you for this video!
Thank you so much! Great to hear about your experiences. As you noticed, sometimes we can like the opposite of what we normally go for, and I have also noticed that our preferences can change with time.
I am a crocheter n knittinger n I love Bright colors n wear them even n the winter to b seen n the street with a big thick long scarf n bright..Toooo many people wear black n Navy n brown n grey pants n coats n can't b seen n the dark streets..I am a retired bus driver n you really can't see these people n those colors
So true, there was just a discussion on a local Facebook group about how hard it is to see people in dark clothes, even though almost everyone in Finland wears a small hanging reflector. But light clothes would help a lot!
Wonderful video with inspiring idea of a colour wheel 🎉👍🙏 is there a chance to make a video about yarn quality (or even yarn choice)? I love your videos and the way you teach ❤
I gravitate towards saturated colors in yarn, but I also like neutrals (mostly tans and browns). I mostly wouldn't buy them, though, for fear of being boring. On the other hand, I wear a lot of neutrals but I still like bright and/or saturated colors. 😅 So this summer I tried adding more colors to my wardrobe AND picking up more neutral colored yarns if they attract my eye 😊
Great conversation! I'm definitely "Team Brights" and just can't get too excited about neutral palettes. Thanks for the Adobe Color tip, I'll definitely check it out.
Interesting topic. For me the color pick is often what is in my stash.😂😂😂 I am currently working on a scarf C2C...the main color is a medium yellow (which I would not have purchased, but it came in a "mystery" box). I purchased black and a medium gray for striping. 12 rows of yellow, 3 rows of black, 1 row of gray, 3 rows of black....repeat 3 times....has a Hogwarts school feel to it...diagonal stripes are fun in a scarf. It's about utility for me. I am a "winter" person, so prefer bright colors, but the pattern often dictates the colors for me. I love how your scarf turned out...tres' chic.🥰
Hi Tuula, this is helpful for me as I usually have trouble picking colors. Something to prepare for before buying yarn. I’m currently working on a project that is a blend of four colors and I’m enjoying it, denim blue, pink, medium green and pale green and I am not a green person but it goes well together. Thank you 😊 Have a great weekend ❣️
I have noticed, that even if I choose the colors of my liking and they look good together as yarn balls, the combination might not work as a finished product. For example different stripe widths make the color combo look totally different. It can be so hard to choose colors sometimes!
So true, yarn balls can look different from yarn in stitches! For example, multicoloured yarn can look ugly with very textured stitches even if we like the colours on their own.
I knit garments that are for me to wear in colors that look good on me and also colors that make me happy (I don’t especially look good in purple with my skin color but I love purple).
True, it can limit what looks good on us. I can't wear warm colours close to my face even if I love the colours themselves, like orange-brown, mustard yellow or terracotta.
i find that it affects how i learn a stitch. if i'm having trouble learning a stitch, i'll use another colour yarn and keep going until i find one that works. i tend to learn better on green or yellow lol
Great video ❤ I really love the full spectrum of colour from clashing brights to subtle muted shades. I'm always interested in how colour palettes are put together, thank you for sharing 😊
Hmmh... I've never thought about how colors affect me, or why I choose the colors I crochet with. It's funny how you took out the orange yarn when you were deciding on 4 to use, that was the first that I chose as my favorite 😊😂. Thank you for making me think of this.
I hadn't thought about it so much during a project but I certainly have attended a seminar about colour in work places way before mobile phones. One thing I've never forgotten from it was the story that an employer had trouble getting his employees to spend a minimum amount of time in the toilet, so he painted it bright dark purple with a fairly wide diagonal stripe in each wall in bright dark yellow. It did the trick for him. People didn't stay in longer than necessary. As I spin my own yarn for a lot of projects I'm happy with the natural colours. I've experimentally dyed a few skeins with onion skins, that turned out orangy, but the 3 different gum tree leaves, the tea & the avocado seeds all turned out to be almost the same shade of lightish brown/grey, which was disappointing but I was able to still use them in the knitted queen sized blanket I made for one of my granddaughters. The MOST difficult part of the blanket was choosing the next colour to do. It was knitted in 11 sections with diagonal stripes of random colour & random rows. I then hand sewed each strip together in a zigzag pattern. My house is made of rocks & logs that aren't painted & then I have mostly cream or white accessories. I thought you must have moved house when I saw the different surroundings but I really loved it being white & letting in SO much light. Black & white appeals to me, which reflects my personality too. 😊
That is funny about toilet colours! 😀 But probably true, very strong colours and stripes in a very small place would make you feel confined and want to leave! This video was filmed in my daughter's house, the same one where I have filmed several others. It is great for that because there is so much light. But her style is opposite to mine
Colors really inspire me as much as the type of yarn I'm using. It depends on what I'm making, but I tend to go with more vibrant colors. And purple.... Can we talk about purple? LOL!😂 That's my favorite color and the first color I see of any yarn texture!! Hahaha!!❤️
Hello I'll try for sure I've thrifted 3 teal "pelotes"(sorry I'm french 😁🤷♀️) and there's one wich is not the same so that's perfect for trying your technique 👍😉 Have a nice week-end 😘
I like to craft with the colours I wear - jewel tones. However I decorate my home in a palette I would never wear and I am so drawn to those and have more Knick knacks in teal and turquoise than you could imagine. My living room is in shades of gray furniture with teal and turquoise colours. My kitchen is white oak with apple green placemats, tableware etc. It’s so odd that I have this way. I’ll be thinking more about it. 🤔
Suppose quite often people would wear and decorate their home in different colours, I have to pay attention to that too, haven't thought about that much!
Thank you for the note about Adobe colour. I will go take a look at it because I can look at something & know whether I like it or not, BUT to choose those colours in a shop I find it daunting & almost impossible even though I'm NOT colour blind at all.
😂 I've had just the same thing happen to me with a comment. You were typing a comment on a video that ended before you hit send so it added it to the next video that started in your que. I've learned to pause the first one before it ends and get my comment typed and sent to it to avoid the confusion. 💛
I notice color effects on me and my mood more with embroidery thread. I love the color yellow, the brighter the better. However, when I work with the color yellow I get nervous and agitated and snappish with those around me. It's so weird how it affects me.
My favourite colours are the colours you get in the spring time and the autumn. I do use a mixture of colours but if I had to choose it would be the soft yellow of a primrose and the russet colours in the autumn. I do not like bottle green or royal blue and seldom use them.
I've tried to make several garments for gifts, in the colours I know the getter will like. But often I have quitted, because I just couldnt force myself to use those yarns anymore. Had to buy something else instead .
The shawl I'm wearing is one I have a video for the stitches, lighter corner to corner stitch. ua-cam.com/video/ODmlCoztJvs/v-deo.html The yarn is one I got from KnitCreate which closed down a couple of years ago, their yarns were Peruvian full wool. The shawl is really warm!
Interesting... I myself always prefer green colors and more than 70% of my projects are green or mixed with green. I have been watching your videos plentty of times and learnd a lot from your kind words. I am writting a personal crochet book so I will not forget my patterns and also write down what I have ever crocheted. Now I'm asking your permission, can I also add what I have learnd from you?
Fascinating, isn’t it? I lean towards “Scandinavian”-style but I like a BRIGHT “pop” of color. Love clean, crisp, white and black lines, but with bright oranges and yellows in throw pillows, for example. Playing with colors is so fun. Thank you, Tuula🫶🏻🧶

I wouldn't say it's the color that affects me, it's more the feel.
Yes, that can affect too, and different people also react to different things - sight or touch.
You are spot on!!! My favorite would be deep dark but at the same time sutle colors.
It is amazing how different shades of the same colour can feel!
Lovely! It's great that you know so well what colours you prefer!
@@TuulaMaaria I feel that I need all colors. And when I watch youtube I get a lot of inspiration!
I like the colors you chose except I would have kept the yellow instead of the green and even kept the pale pink also. But of course purple, yellow, and pink are my favorite colors. I like the color you are wearing.
Thank you! Probably everyone would have chosen different colours from that lot!
I couldn’t agree with you more,..colrs have always affected me emotionally…all you have to do is look at my yarn stash to know that I love light, happy colors,…sunshine,…and soothing pastels, quiet and peace,…and woodsy,..nature and this gorgeous world. Not to say I don’t Love..with just my eyes,…navy, red, and my favorite, don’t laugh,…all
Shades of Brown…chocolate, toffee, mocha, butterscotch, hazelnut, pecan,…etc…😂😂😂. But I never have neverthought about doing the little exercise that you did…other than when I did a temperature blanket…thank you, Tula!
Lovely, you are well aware of the different effects different types of colours have on you!
I love your videos ❤ I always choose colours for a project that give me a feel-good vibe. It is an interesting and positive brain storming session. However I take care not to repeat the same hues again and again. Colours are a personal preference and I don't always expect others to like mine🎉
True, it is easy to end up using the same favourite colours all the time!
Thank you Tuula Marie ~ very thoughtful and good to raise our awareness of color as we crochet. I always enjoy your videos. Much affection from Portland Oregon.
Thank you so much! Greetings from Finland!
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing! 💜
I love and appreciate you ma'am. I see you post I am here for it ❤.
Oh, lovely, so glad to hear!
Thank you! Talking about different kinds of yarns has been in my mind but so far I have only put in bits about that subject into other videos!
I love colours like you.
💜💛
I gravitate towards saturated colors in yarn, but I also like neutrals (mostly tans and browns). I mostly wouldn't buy them, though, for fear of being boring. On the other hand, I wear a lot of neutrals but I still like bright and/or saturated colors. 😅 So this summer I tried adding more colors to my wardrobe AND picking up more neutral colored yarns if they attract my eye 😊
Great! It can take time and effort to decide colours for different uses and occasions!
Great conversation! I'm definitely "Team Brights" and just can't get too excited about neutral palettes. Thanks for the Adobe Color tip, I'll definitely check it out.
Lovely, thank you!
Thanks for helping to learn how to select color choices. I need lots of help!❤
Great!
Hi Tuula Maaria🌸 it make sense what you telling..🙏❤️
Perfect! 💗
Thank you! True, diagonal stripes work great in a scarf!
We are exactly the same!! Before you picked your favorite I had picked the same ones! Although neutrals have their place I give the item away.
That's nice! Yes, often we can make things that are not for ourselves and then someone else selects the colours!
Thank you, you too!
That's a great poin! It would have an effect if you don't like looking at the color you are using to learn something new!
Great video ❤ I really love the full spectrum of colour from clashing brights to subtle muted shades. I'm always interested in how colour palettes are put together, thank you for sharing 😊
Lovely! It's great that there are so many colours, enough for everybody! 💗
Hmmh... I've never thought about how colors affect me, or why I choose the colors I crochet with. It's funny how you took out the orange yarn when you were deciding on 4 to use, that was the first that I chose as my favorite 😊😂. Thank you for making me think of this.
Everyone has different favourites! Great that so many colours exist!
Love your channel!
Thank you!
I love the colors you chose. I’d have chosen same. 4C. That’s refrigerator temp. A bit chilly. But I don’t mind it. 🙂
I worked out 4c is fridge temperature & brrrr 😅
Yes, that was filmed around 9 AM, it got much warmer with the sun getting higher!
Hahaha!!❤️
I understand that very well - purples and lilacs are colours I notice anywhere too!
❤
Hello I'll try for sure I've thrifted 3 teal "pelotes"(sorry I'm french 😁🤷♀️) and there's one wich is not the same so that's perfect for trying your technique 👍😉
Have a nice week-end 😘
Thank you, you too!
@@TuulaMaaria 😁👍😉🧶
Great, yes, Adobe Color is very useful for selecting colours and checking how they work together!
❤❤❤
💗
Great video, thanks
I think you commented on the wrong video, and I watched that video, now I'm going to see it again after you mentioned that point
I think you had two videos open at the same time, this comment came on the wrong video I'm not Corinna and there are no pineapples on this video!
That is interesting! But shows how strong effect colours can have!
My favourite colours are the colours you get in the spring time and the autumn. I do use a mixture of colours but if I had to choose it would be the soft yellow of a primrose and the russet colours in the autumn. I do not like bottle green or royal blue and seldom use them.
Great that you know so well what you like best!
I've tried to make several garments for gifts, in the colours I know the getter will like. But often I have quitted, because I just couldnt force myself to use those yarns anymore. Had to buy something else instead .
I understand that, easily happens to me too!
Thank you , I am like you that the colour I wear affects me completely. That is a lovely shawl what is the pattern please, and what yarn did you use.
@@TuulaMaaria 🤗
I agree, I can't stand knitting or crocheting with colours I dont like, I find it depressing and boring
Yes, it takes extra effort to work with colours we don't like!
I’m a bit colour blind 😂 so I have problems matching them 😕 I usually ask my daughter or sister 😁
Yes, in that case it's good to have help!
Good you are finding all sorts of useful tips! Yes, you can add what you have learned from me!
@@TuulaMaaria I am grateful✨️💖
Fascinating, isn’t it? I lean towards “Scandinavian”-style but I like a BRIGHT “pop” of color. Love clean, crisp, white and black lines, but with bright oranges and yellows in throw pillows, for example. Playing with colors is so fun. Thank you, Tuula🫶🏻🧶
So true, playing with colours is fun! 💗
I'm the same. I don't like green I find I can crochet 1 row in green but 2 rows in pinks, purples, blues, reds etc so that's what I do
True, we can hide less liked colours into better colours!
It's why I dislike the everything-is-gray-and-white trend in interior design! I'm on the color side! I even use color night lights! 💜🩷💚💙💛
Sounds lovely! 💜
