- Thanks to a comment by user KingEvoTheDon on our recent video "What Is Corny In Hip-Hop," we've dug into the question of how rappers fall into and get out of the "corny" category. We know which factors in an artist's music or persona contribute to the label being applied to them, but what can an artist do to change that narrative for the better?
While some artists may never completely shed the corny label, there are many examples in today's game of rappers making themselves less corny or, as KingEvo suggested, "uncornifying" themselves. From Childish Gambino to Rich Brian, we'll take a look at popular hip-hop artists in recent memory who have upgraded their image from corny to more edgy and refreshing.

As a black person and hip hop head, I get tired of the word corny being thrown around. It’s so old. There’s more than one way to be black. There is more than one way to be an artist, there is more than one way to be a rapper. and it seems to me that if you don’t behave or dress a certain way or step in line, or talk about what black culture has said you should, you get slapped with the “corny” label. Just let people live. Goddam.
It ain't about being black or being a gangster rapper. It's about rappers being fake deep. Presenting themselves as rappers with "substance" and bringing something new to the table most of them aren't saying much.
The one and only nah that’s not it. We’re just in the habit of policing what’s cool and socially acceptable, which is money, redbones, guns, and coke. Step outside of that and you’re corny. These trap artists aren’t saying much of anything either. Try again.

Tyler and Odd Future has such a huge cult following and influence on modern hip-hop it was hard to call them entirely corny back then. After Wolf Tyler himself started being took more serious.
Sam Mercer The personality, energy, style, and music of OF influenced not just their core audience but many rappers and artist we see today. I don’t think we’d be getting stuff like the Astroworld concerts if not for Camp Flaw Gnaw, or many of the eccentric, wild, and colorful rappers we see today.
On top of that Tyler and company’s sound was extremely authentic and unique during the time. The early projects like OF Tape 2, Bastard and Goblin had their corny moments, cannot deny that, but still felt fresh and full of super catchy bangers

Being corny doesn't just apply to the "nerdy" rappers, it applies to all rappers who pander to a specific audience without an ounce of talent or charisma. They simply exist to sell an image and take what other better rappers did, but completely water it down. Also lol at saying that creativity is seen as corny. These nerdy rappers simply make music for the rhythmless. From their wack/generic beats, whiny voices, and laughably bad rhymes that they swear are "too deep for the average mind" when in reality, they're not even on Nelly's level lyrically, let alone on track to being on the same level as Nas, Jay, Biggie, etc. like a lot of these rappers' fans like to pretend they are.
To answer your question, the reason why that particular line was corny was because there was nothing creative or interesting about that bar. It's such a "Punchlines 101" type bar that it's insulting. A line like that wouldn't even be hot in the 80's let alone the 2010's.

I think one of the few things that really work is pushing towards sincerity, without making content that's overly sentimental and filled with useless platitudes and fake wokeness. To give an example of this contrast: Kendrick's albums are written incredibly well and are able to provide commentary on both the outside world, while also being introspective. He doesn't rely on cliche points, and usually finds interesting ways to present ideas on topics, even if other rappers have rapped on those same topics (ex. police brutality, racism, growing up in the streets, the perils of success and fame). This is a sharp contrast to Hopsin saying "Did the man who invented college go to college?". Even when you put aside the really ridiculous lines, a lot of Hopsin's lines (and to a certain extent Logic's) border on "we live in a society" type cliches that definitely won't age well as time goes on. On top of all of that though, you have to make good music. New, exciting, and interesting music triumphs all, and people are much more likely to forgive and forget when your shit bumps.
Sometimes I get conflicted about the empty platitude thing. Some people are intelligent about things that are less abstract and don’t fully understand deeper messages, so the only motivation they can get comes from cliches. To us it sounds tired and lazy (which in some cases it is for people trying to be “relatable” to build a following) but then sometimes I think it’s a good thing for people who are more intelligent in other areas to have a source of motivation from a simplified message they can understand clearly.
@@BTeezy130 That's a good point. I get conflicted about it too and wonder if maybe I'm being too cynical. But I think that the music industry in general underestimates people's intelligence. Where the cliche thing really bothers me is when it's used to push a narrative that is so simple that it's just untrue, and sometimes those can feel like a conversation stopper instead of a conversation starter. Like for example I really dislike a lot of Prince Ea's (spoken word artist) stuff because a lot of his videos boil down to "phones/social media are bad and they make us sad" or "education turns kids into slaves". I kind of resent this because I feel like this contributes to a lot of people being completely dismissive of these things, and not seeing any of the potential positives of social media or education in society. The conversation just kind of stops there. And I do get that in a song you're limited by time and structure and shouldn't be expected to have as much nuance as an essay. But idk, I just find myself shaking my head at the kinds of messages a lot of artists put out with their music. I view a lot of them as basically McDonalds salads. Like it's marketed as healthy because it's a salad, but it's also got whatever the fuck McDonalds puts in their food, that ultimately means they're still selling you the same shit.
Daniel Levin dude I feel like I’m talking to myself right now. I’ve thought about this topic so much and I have the exact same view with everything to just said. Especially about people being dismissive because there seems only to be facile opinions on complex issues and events. I’m so happy I came across the word “facile” a little while ago because it is the perfect description all bundled up into a single word. (I see the irony of that lol). After a while words start to mean absolutely nothing no matter how much importance they hold because people talk about things like healthcare as casually as they talk about what they did over the weekend. People get sick of hearing it and lose interest in the cause.

It's more so the overabundance of fake socially conscious music/takes that makes me worry that over time people will become very jaded about the idea that artists can have something meaningful to express in their art.

This is what I’m talking about. The whole “this rapper is good because he doesn’t talk about guns and drugs” argument is garbage. That just means you’ll take anything with the “conscious” label thrown on it regardless of quality. I also say he’s a stereotypical rapper because even though he’s not explicitly talking about the same things as these lean sipping, gun toting rappers, he’s clearly taking direct influence from them and taking their aesthetic, but watering it down without bringing anything new or interesting to the table or even bringing any interesting insight to these topics. It doesn’t matter what you’re talking about, whether you’re talking about social issues or even talking about street shit (drugs, violence, etc.), the music has to speak for itself and you ain’t making slaps, it simply won’t matter what you’re talking about. A bad song is a bad song.

Daniel Lopez not at all. Drake’s early stuff was super corny. Especially when he was still doing all that Young Money garbage with Wayne and a bunch of nobodies. It wasn’t until NWTS when he really started making slaps. He got better beats, put more bass in his voice, his flow got better, and his songs overall got less sappy. The sappiness is still there (he’s gotta keep his female fanbase somehow), but he got more of a balance on NWTS and IYRTITL.
Corny Dude “6 pm in New York” and “Energy” were on IYRTITL, “Tuscan Leather” was on NWTS, and “0 to 100” was also around that time period too, so the argument still stands. A lot of his more recent stuff is kinda meh, but he was at his best from 2013-2015.

To be honest Childish Gambino was never corny to me his bars on Camp were clever and funny punchlines well crafted. I really liked that he made music pure from the heart and he always was honest which in terms made his music great and I could also relate to a lot of the stuff he was talking about. People just dismissed him and called him corny because of his nerdy persona and it made people think that he was not black enough or perceived him as a white rapper trying to be black. He has evolved a lot from his come up and as much as I would like to see the culdesac, ep, and camp version of him spitting bars again I’m afraid that we’ll never get that version of him again because he has grown and matured into a different artist.

I think the real problem is taking rap seriously in the first place. Its entertainment. Improving your life and educating yourself is what you should take seriously.

“Corny rappers” are usually rappers who are trying to make social change in the world and bring attention to important issues like feminism, police brutality, and systemic racism in the rap game. People find them “corny” because they don’t like to think, and to actually analyze the racism that affects THEM, which I find hilarious.
Gtfo if these corny ass rappers were doing anything right, nobody would be calling them corny. These rappers are corny because they try to act all high and mighty, but aren’t bringing anything new or interesting to the table sonically or lyrically. They’re more worried about pandering to the “real hip-hop” crowd than actually making great and to make matters worse, they usually jack flows from these same rappers that their fans would normally clown (even using some of their producers), but water it down and put this pretentious “conscious” label on top without actually saying anything interesting or memorable.

What I dont understand is why does a rapper who doesnt come across as a negative stereotype or a conscious rapper have to be corny. Everyone has their lane and fans who follow. Its all about being honest with your fans and yourself

All but an exception of a handful of 'rappers' since the mid/late 90's, most rappers can never 'uncornify' themselves. They enter the game corny af, exit the game corny af. They sell their souls in hopes of staying around.. then they don't push them anymore. Consequently, they are puppets from that point on for the rest of their lives. Let's see what happens to The Island Boys in a few months, now that they sold their souls supposedly.
