Never forget that there are only two philosophies to rule your life:
the one of the cross, which starts with the fast and ends with the feast.
The other of Satan, which starts with the feast and ends with the headache.

The Vatican II era corrupted, like many other things, fasting for Catholics. It made it much more lenient and soft, thereby undermining the entire effort.
Breaking from tradition was a Self-defeating project by the Church.
Go by the pre-Vatican II era rules for Lent:
No meat on Fridays (and practice the same for the entire year. Environmentalists should love it), Ash Wednesday, or Holy Saturday morning.
One moderate meal a day (thats around 600-800 calories), supplemented by two small “meals”, once in morning and once in evening, that combined can not exceed the amount of the moderate meal.
    Meat only once a day.
    No snacking at all.
Sundays are the exception. You can eat anything you want, as it is always a feast day of the Resurrection.
Go the extra mile and take no food at all on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

How little we understand fasting. It is so simple that it has become so complicated.
To me in the simplest way to explain fasting it is like a reset button. We were and are created in the image of God, but in this fallen world, we become polluted with sin selfishness etc, we lose communion with the creator our father in heaven. Fasting done properly can and dose give us clarity of mind refreshes our body and Spirit, brings healing, an understanding in our lives. Jesus fasted and prayed alot. We should do the same, if we want to be as Christ, He was endowed with great power, but before He started His ministry He was baptized and then fasted for 40 days and nights.
Fasting is powerful and effective way to communicate with the creator our father

Christians, the best fast could be forgiving all our dear and precious family members unconditionally & reconciling in a manner most pleasing to God. Anger leaders to hatred which leads to unforgiveness. The Holy Bible, Peter “Be alert and sober minded for the devil is on the prowl to devour someone” so be aware that the thief is hiding behind every weak person, every electronic device, every glass of alcohol, places of immorality, immodesty, profanity, avarice etc.

Catholics aren't puritans. A glass of alcohol and an electronic device (barring obvious sinful uses of it) is fine in moderation.

Christians should know the purpose and distunguish their practice of fasting from the "fasting" being done by other sects (Buddhists would fast from any fruits of the earth like carrots, turnips, sweetpotatoes etc.. Hindus or their equivalent would fast from milk, grains, etc.. and the same also with those who call themselves as "wiccan") We have to place Christ in the center of the Spiritual practices

I lost 70 lbs in 4 months with no exercise whatsoever by eliminating vegetable oil, cutting carbs down to under-20 a day, and fasting either for one meal a day, or two meals within about a four-hour window. So fasting for 20 hours. It does make your moods much much much more consistent and manageable. Your energy level and mood are no longer dependent on when or what you last ate. It's absolutely astonishing how many positive effects fasting has on the body.

@@marius2k8 You deliberately miss the point. Catholics do not fast to lose weight/alter their mood or energy levels. It is not a "lifestyle choice" or hobby.

I beg to differ, it’s ok to politely and gently inform your hosts in advance that you are fasting or abstaining for religious reasons. 99% of people are happy to comply.

Someone needs mortification, hint, hint. If crying children are a distraction to you listening, you need to work on that.
My dad was a tyrant, you don’t move, you don’t talk, you don’t breath during church, he didn’t instill a love or fear of God in me, he just made me hate going to church and I spent over a decade as an atheist as a result.

    • @finallythere100

It can be a distraction to the priest, (especially those saying the Latin Mass) as well as interrupt' concentration of those that are ion the congregation, . I remember when I was so sick for years,. it took EVERYTHING in me to get up, get dressed and go to Mass. I had missed for so long due to illness, and I badly needed that one Mass, and I hung on to every word I could hear at the sermon. . I tired to have a good spirit, but it was so defeating to not be able to concentrate due to parents that allowed children to hijack the Mass. (I have been on both laity ends, but there were no cry rooms where I was at that time, so I had to make other arrangements!) Crying babies happens, and we need to praise God for them and their parents and be supportive, but no need for it to continue for any length of time...
