Incredible tutorial - calming and reassuring, Mr. Rogers could do no better and that's meant as a compliment. Watch this after a stressful day at work (super stressful day, add some bourbon) and you will be totally calm and relaxed at the end.
You should always test the kind of glue that you're planning to use on an old piece of line both of monofilament and the fly line and the backing to make sure that the glue does not melt any of the fishing lines as this will weaken the rig and cause a break off
This was a great tutorial! I am taking by brother and son out fly fishing for the first time and needed to re-string two reels, this video gave me the confidence to do it. Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Thanks for the great tutorial video, it was very helpful and educational for me and my young son to actually follow and understand with ease.. great job sir thank you.
I was fishing yesterday and caught a nice trout weighing 4lb 3ozs but the welded loop was catching in the guide's of my fly rod causing the rod to jerk when playing the fish.. I thought it was going to pull the fly out of the fish but I was lucky.. I think the guy in the video is right.. the wielded loops on fly lines are too big to go through the guides. I just cut mine off today.. I don't want anything that would add to loosing fish.. better have it smooth
EXCELLENT! One of the very few of these guys who sticks to the point. (No waste of time listening to him bask in the sound of his own voice.) It would have been better if he gave some advice about How Much backing and Line to use.
Hello , Thanks for sharing, I've a question man.. What is the difference between a fly fishing reel and the normal one? Actually i've a fly reel but don't know how to use it, at the beginning i thought i'll need a handle for it! Appreciate you advice, Regards,
Thanks for cutting off the loops ! Fly fishers should unit at fly fishing is not to be rushed . Learn the important knots . Needle and nail knots are easy with a bit of practice . If your in such a rush to hit the water ……. Maybe give spin cast / bait casting a try .
guys i have a knot that is simpler that requires no stiffner no peice of tippet and just your fingers and it takes just a couple seconds to do when you learned it well i discovered thos knot on my own when i was a beginer and ive used it now for 4 years and it has always been a good knot for me ill try to do a video to show you guys how to do it in not too long
I am really struggling to believe a nail knot (no matter how short one cuts the tails) can slide better through the guides than utilizing the welded loop. Would you be willing to give us more details on how that happened? Which part of the knot do you suspect caught on the guide?
What is the difference between leader and tippet? How much of either should you use? I'm also a beginner at this and I'm down to the very bottom of what you call the leader
Just in case you get a big fish it will run the 100 feet of line in no time. In fact great casters can cast the whole line and you will not have any room for the fish to run
Thank you for the informative video I just got my first fly rod for my 21st bday. And was dumbfounded on what to do and how to get started. I'll be trying this out.
If you are fishing in freshwater you will most likely not have to worry about ever using the backing. Using the loop will be good for most freshwater applications
Boys and girls, if you want to over do it, follow this video. It's great, but not necessary. Why is it that anything to do with Fly fishing involves overcomplicating a simple process? lol. BTW, loops pass through guides just fine.
I prefer an Albright not whenever I'm working with fly line much easier in a pinch. Also for any beginners watching, don't waste your money on packaged, tapered leaders. Just buy spools of two or three different mono strengths and learn both the blood knot and/or the double surgeons knot. Manually taper the strengths however you deem necessary. It's way cheaper and you can use line you probably already have.
One of your Subscribers Bobby Garmon asked you a VERY good question. Would you mind responding to his question. There are amateurs like us who are will to learn. Thank you.
I recently got my first fly rod and realized reel was set up on the left side, and I thought, Oh shit, I gotta find a right hand reel . I was looking at marketplace for reels and shocked at the prices. Then I heard my late brother... Hey dumdum, turn the reel around. I did and it worked.
He mentions he is going to show how to put the leader onto a/the fly line, if either the leader or fly line(my particular problem) doesn’t have a loop, and then proceeds not to show it. Am I the only one who noticed this important missing piece? How do I proceed? Where do I look? Where do I go to find this one specific problem that will show me how to do this?
What brand of reel is that?? I like the shape and arbor size. I would however like another color! I am fishing a 8', 4 wt rod and I am looking for a match reel. What brand is that?
Incredible tutorial - calming and reassuring, Mr. Rogers could do no better and that's meant as a compliment. Watch this after a stressful day at work (super stressful day, add some bourbon) and you will be totally calm and relaxed at the end.
watched the video once with supplies ready. 5 minutes later i have a completely setup reel. very well made video. Thank you
For my nail knots, I always put on some kind of glue to strengthen the knot and help it run through the guides smother. It really helps me!
You should always test the kind of glue that you're planning to use on an old piece of line both of monofilament and the fly line and the backing to make sure that the glue does not melt any of the fishing lines as this will weaken the rig and cause a break off
I prefer a small dab of epoxy
Great stuff here. Precise, calm and no nonsense.
Thank you for the super clear backing knot explanation. I had to back with mono before the backing to stop the backing from slipping around! .....
Thank you for the tutorial. I just picked up my first fly rod and reel yesterday. I am going to use it today. Very well done.
This was a great tutorial!
I am taking by brother and son out fly fishing for the first time and
needed to re-string two reels, this video gave me the confidence to do it. Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Very clear explanation and step by step video for beginner!!! So Good!!!
An incredible tutorial and so well explained/demonstrated!
Just getting into fly fishing and watching this is a tremendous help! Thanks for the VERY informative step by step instructions!
Excellent job, you made it look so easy and the camera work was spot on.....BIG thumbs up from me. Thank you.
Very good video I followed it step by step and every cast is smooth like butter
Thanks. I’m new to fly fishing and this is what I’ve been stressing about. Putting the reel together and you explained it perfectly.
Thanks for the great tutorial video, it was very helpful and educational for me and my young son to actually follow and understand with ease.. great job sir thank you.
141 people disliked this video. Like how petty can someone be? Dude great video for beginners! Keep up the good work
downvoted for the echo, very distracting
I’m a beginner and I don’t know what the difference between backing and fly line is because he never explained it
The arbor knot he tied sucks.
Im starting fly fishing this season and i will definitely use your video. Thank you pal !
This is such an excellent video and super informative. Thank you for taking the time to show us newbies how to properly set up a reel. Great job!
i like the county line reel , works well and easy to set up
Best video I've seen! Thanks for posting
Excellent video. I will have to try out your variation the Nail Knot.
Excellent. So clear and well paced. :-)
The best tutorial I have ever come across on how to rig your Flyfishing reel 👍👍👍
T4rrz
i used this video for step by step instructions. THANKS!
Great Video!
I just set up my new reel with your help : )
Thanks a lot
You forgot to mention to make sure your backing and fly line go on evenly very important
I like to use a old empty tube out of a ink pen it acts as a stiffener and you can feed the tag end through pull it out and pull down the knot
Excellent tutorial. Thank you so much.
Mike 123 Thanks for the great video. I finally have my lines on my reel...Thanks again
Great tips. Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Been fly fishing for ~20 years and I learned a lot from this. Excellent video and great explanations!
Great video thanks!!!
Cut the loop?? Na this guy is making a simple thing sound like rocket science it’s not! “Create a stiffener etc” lol !!
I agree the guy is off on his own trip. Not a good video for beginners looking for traditional proven methods
great job explaining this. 👍🏻. much appreciated.
Thank you for the informative video I just got my first fly rod for my 21st bday. And was dumbfounded on what to do and how to attach evrything
nui.
This is video really help a lot ❤❤
Excellent tutorial :-) thanks for sharing
Very informative and well instructed. Thank you!
yw buddy.
Supershow this. I used the latest Rio gelspun multicolour backing to connect a new flyline with and the Nail knot needed 3 attempts
On my bucket list.
Very well instructed video 😊 Thank you 👌
Awesome video!
What a great video
I have no experience fly fishing and this is a great tutorial. But my first question is how much backing should be on the reel?
Good question. Maybe and hopefully he will respond.
100yards
@@ryanbooth3259 You Have Got to be Kidding.....100 yards?
100 to 300 yds
Most of the time 100 300 is mainly for saltwater
Thank you! I'm very new to this and I've just learned something important.
Best tutorial
Do you add tippet to the leader then the fly? Or do you not use the tippet? ... Tying the fly directly to the leader?
EXCELLENT! One of the very few of these guys who sticks to the point. (No waste of time listening to him bask in the sound of his own voice.) It would have been better if he gave some advice about How Much backing and Line to use.
Thanks! I got a fly rod for my 15th birthday today and this helped out a lot!
Great video thank you!
Excellent Video!!!!
Sorry but this still seems super complicated to me.. .is there no other way to do all this? Is this the easy way?
Really good video !
1st Setting up a fly reel. 12 minutes later i got myself a nicely setup reel thank to this video. Good Job !
Exceptional, thank you!
Hello , Thanks for sharing,
I've a question man.. What is the difference between a fly fishing reel and the normal one?
Actually i've a fly reel but don't know how to use it, at the beginning i thought i'll need a handle for it!
Appreciate you advice,
Regards,
Fly reel takes thicker and longer line
Fly Fishing & Dreams Thanks for the info.
!Not at all, they just expressing their ignorance
I watched a few of these and this was by far my favorite. Very clear. Nice job. I just rigged up a fly reel tonight never having touched one before.
Can you use a different brand reel with a different brand spool? If so how do you size them?
GREAT video!
Also I'm not criticizing. If it works for you then that's always good. I guess I just like my way. I mean no harm and I'm not judging. This knot works
Amazing video buddy, thx!!!
i think youre a teacher in real,arent u?
But did you land the fish?
This helped so much i then realised i only have backing on my reel and thats why i dont cast well
Thanks for cutting off the loops ! Fly fishers should unit at fly fishing is not to be rushed . Learn the important knots . Needle and nail knots are easy with a bit of practice . If your in such a rush to hit the water ……. Maybe give spin cast / bait casting a try .

what is the reel (brand name)
Amazing video!! Thank you so much for making it! I had no clue how to do any of it..and now..I feel like a pro!! Great Job!!
Excellent demonstrate, can't wait for my fly line to arrive to try this out!
I am really struggling to believe a nail knot (no matter how short one cuts the tails) can slide better through the guides than utilizing the welded loop. Would you be willing to give us more details on how that happened? Which part of the knot do you suspect caught on the guide?
Very helpful, Thanks.
Why don’t you just make an Albright knot to tie the backing to the fly line it works really well but great video
What kinda line cutters do you have? They look like they do an awesome job !!!
The fly line need to be tight on the reel? Mine has alot of slack and most of the line on the reel is on one side more than the other.
What’s the difference between the nail knot and a uni knot? They seem the same just the uni doesn’t use all the extra stuff.
Do you tie the fly to the leader, or tie a length of tippet to the leader?
What is the difference between leader and tippet? How much of either should you use? I'm also a beginner at this and I'm down to the very bottom of what you call the leader
Why is a backing used? As opposed to just tying the fly line right to the reel.
Just in case you get a big fish it will run the 100 feet of line in no time. In fact great casters can cast the whole line and you will not have any room for the fish to run
The other comments are correct and it also fills the spool cheaply which makes retrieval faster. Never buy a small arbor reel you'll regret it
Thank you very much!
Nice rEel mate
Hi can you tell me the name of the red line that you used?
Thank you for the informative video I just got my first fly rod for my 21st bday. And was dumbfounded on what to do and how to get started. I'll be trying this out.
Instead of a double overhand on the tag end, they a "figure 8". I find it holds better and has less slip
Thank you. Very helpful.
Great video. Did not have to re watch or rewind. you did a great job on this video.
2 Lyfs ii
2 Lyfs I
Well i did ..
Really helpful, thanks very much, you made it look simple, well done. I have saved.
Yea you are my new best friend. 😁
Can do everything upto nail knot which I'm struggling with
If you are fishing in freshwater you will most likely not have to worry about ever using the backing. Using the loop will be good for most freshwater applications
I am brand new...just subbed because you have made a good vid for begginers.
Really good video. I noticed the fly line had a price tag of $89.99?
Jbaz You can often get rio weight forward 5 or 6 weight floating for around 35 dollars. Better than buying three over and over for 90
Sweet jesus i noticed this too. Guy must be wiping with hundreds or something.
Been a longtime fisherman and studying fly fishing. I’ve been looking at tons of videos and yours is the best. Thank you
Boys and girls, if you want to over do it, follow this video. It's great, but not necessary. Why is it that anything to do with Fly fishing involves overcomplicating a simple process? lol. BTW, loops pass through guides just fine.
What is the purpose of the backer line? I have never seen anyone casting so far as to reach this line.
Best tutorial yet. Well done!

Can you just use a double uni knot to connect the backing to the fly line ? Looks identical
I recently got my first fly rod and realized reel was set up on the left side, and I thought,
Oh shit, I gotta find a right hand reel .
I was looking at marketplace for reels and shocked at the prices. Then I heard my late brother...

89.99 for line???
Do you need to attach tippet to the leader?
What brand of reel is that?? I like the shape and arbor size. I would however like another color! I am fishing a 8', 4 wt rod and I am looking for a match reel. What brand is that?
