I bought my house 6 years ago and asked my Dad if I could put up his Lionel trains. I had only seen them under the christmas tree twice as a Kid. My Dad was so happy that one of his Boys asked to get his trains running, Since then I have built a very nice layout and have amassed a nice amount of Post War. Thanks for this video. Very informative.
RIP Tom McComas. Thanks for all the books, videos and memories.
Boy does this video bring back memories. I got my first Lionel Scout set in 1953 at Christmas. I still have it (2022).
Neat! Must be worth a fortune now!! Merry Christmas time!
do you set it up? xo does it still work. :D
@@SummerSetBytheSea the Lionel Scout line with the cheapest of the cheap Marx trains were better.
So this was the Lionel special that aired on PBS in honor of Lionel's 100th anniversary, as mentioned on the back covers of numerous TMBV media releases, right? I remember seeing a trailer for the home video release of it at the end of the 2002 VHS release of "OH NO!" when I was a kid. It's cool to finally see this Lionel documentary. Thanks very much for uploading it! Its opening song is very catchy and exciting.
I remember checking this out at my local Library.
I was amazed learning about the history for Lionel’s 100th Anniversary.
Now at Lionel’s 122nd Anniversary, I look back at this video with nostalgia.
I wonder about the 125th in 2025.

Oh for the day that you had hobby shops and trains were not a commodity bought and sold for-profit, they were just enjoyed.
I enjoyed the train videos. Please post more of them such as the Hudson videos and toy train layout layout series.
As long as I keep finding them in thrift stores, there'll be more train VHS tapes uploaded in the future!
That song reminds me of Christmas, all the family over an toy trains for Christmas.
My childhood has come back to me! I used to own the VHS tapes of this documentary! Thank you very much for uploading this special (well, Part 1 of it anyways)! Also, if possible, could you please upload Part 2 of "A Century of Lionel Trains?"
Part 2 is scheduled for June 3rd!
@@tapetimewithtom2 Thank you very much! I can't wait for more of my childhood memories to come back to me!

@@tapetimewithtom2 And speaking of double o gauge I wonder if lionel electric trains's double o gauge can be compatible some european double o gauge trains on Ivan dow's double o gauge model train layout in montreal canada that was mentioned in the spring 1991 video issue of toy train revue magazine.
Model trains and the layouts they run on have always been magic for me. I loved to go to the State Fair growing up for the massive train room even more than for the carnival part of it.
Um, real trains don't run on 3 rails. Old Style Tech. :(
Can anyone identify the jazz soundtrack from 32:17 to 34:34? Plus 35:14 to 36:58?
So that's how Lionel Trains started!
Actually its not: Unfortunately the video perpetuates the myth about the first lionel train, but it always made a good story, which is what Lionel intended of course.
The video is very lightweight on facts, but doesn't really matter: it's just fun to watch it for the wonderful trains, just don't treat it as a lesson in history

What was that modern North American long sturdy streamlined diesel electric freight train picture poster at 4:56?
That was a New York Central Railroad F3 locomotive.
@@zenithcoinsandhobbies It had been too cool to look at with both eyes so that we will look at it.
Does anyone like the modern North American New York Central Railroad Early Bird long sturdy streamlined diesel electric freight trains?

This is what the Lionel trains is, intended to be played with not intended to be high dollar collectors stationary on shelves. Toys not cherished delicate collectibles. Pre/post war Lionel trains will live on far after the high dollar collector electronic stuff has become non functional scrap. 😊
Marx guy here , keep them rolling .
31:06 They're doing more of these for Disney's 100th Anniversary.

I like this song
I've finally got back into running my Lionel trains from the 50s I'm 67yrs old and it brings back memories of when I got my Train set when I was 5yrs old

THE MOMENT
It's ironic seeing the State Set's passenger train pass by the baggage cart and the automobile in one direction and then pass by them again in the opposite direction.
