    I don’t think it’s any coincidence that as I’ve become a more tidy and organized person, I’ve also become a more productive person, a more motivated person, my mental health has improved, I have better self-efficacy, and I’m just overall less likely to get stressed out. In today's video I'm sharing the correlation I've realized between it all, how I think decluttering has changed my life, and why I think it's important. I hope it gives you some motivation or just insight into how the little changes you make in your life can make a big difference.

    I used to tell my husband this all the time when we first got married and he would laugh thinking I was joking about the clutter impacting how I felt. When he finally saw how much happier and productive I was after I tidied up our apartment, he started to take it seriously.

      I am 62 and started the decluttering process (very slowly) after retiring at 55. The more I decluttered, the more it motivated me to go further and now the main areas of my house are easy to clean and tidy and feel calm and relaxing. I still have some trouble areas (basement storage, books, fabric and sentimental) to declutter further but now I have the confidence in myself and the process (love Dana, Dawn and Cass) to whittle away at it. My husband jumped on board a few years in when he noticed how tidy my side of the closet was. From ‘don’t touch my stuff, it’s fine) to selling tools and large items on-line and giving decluttering advice to his friends. My husband has said he wishes we knew this earlier so we didn’t waste money on all this ‘stuff’ but at least we know now.

    Just a comment about creativity and clutter. As an artist when you are creating something you might have a little bit of a mess going on. But if you continue to have your space cluttered and disorganized and messy it will freeze you and create the opposite effect. So if you have any kind of clutter or mess or disorganization it can only be temporary. You've got to clean up after yourself afterwards and the quicker you do it the easier it is

    • @lindabourcet1349
      @lindabourcet1349 2 роки тому +11

      Completely agree! Make the mess while making art and then put it away. Cleaning up gives you a fresh start to be creative tomorrow. If you leave the mess, you will avoid the room you do art in because you will have to clean up first which makes it easier to not make art. Keeping your tools and supplies clean and tidy will make them last longer and reduce the effort to find them later.

      Wow, you people are something else. Have you offered to help in any way? Have you asked them if something is going on? Or are you too focused on YOU and YOUR mental health. As someone who has gone through several different medical issues where I was unable to do the simplest things, my house is still a wreck from that time. Some of the stuff, I just don’t know what to do with it. When I try to work on things, I get so overwhelmed that I stand and stare at the same things, frozen on where to start. The point is, stop being so selfish! I’m sure these family members can FEEL your judgment, no matter how “hard” you try to hide it. And that doesn’t HELP either!

      The minimum effective dose really works. Basically pick a goal that is ludicrously small. For example, i am crocheting something for a friend. I left it for months and having ambitious goals weren't helping. I now have a goal of 1 line a day minimum. If I don't want to do more then that is fine. This has really helped and I am making really decent progress.

My current situation dictates that I go into one of two guest rooms for some much needed "breathing room". I can totally attest to how clutter impacts mental health. My husband is messy and when I moved in with him, my mental health took a sharp decline - I've never struggled so badly with anxiety as I have this past year (granted some is circumstantial with big life shifts, but when I tidy a space in our home I find relief and less anxiousness in general). Hello I just found your channel last week and your content has been very useful to me. My dad, grandpa, and uncle are hoarders. I may not be at the point of a hoarder but needless to say I did not learn the habit of constantly decluttering and organizing and the concepts of decluttering and organizing have been so illusive and unnatural to me. I’ve decluttered a lot over the last few years but I’m in grad school and I cannot keep up with the housework. The house is always a mess and I feel like a failure. I feel that low grade stress all the time. On top of that we are already decluttering my grandpas old stuff from our house (we live in his old house) and also dumping a ton of stuff from the other tenant that was in our house because he died recently. We have made at least 12 dump runs. I want to get organized and I’ve been decluttering my stuff again in little bursts throughout all the other stuff going on. Your channel is really helping me feel like someday I’ll get to where I want to be. I want to be productive and less stressed! Thank you for your videos.

    I am honestly binging on your videos (as I declutter my son’s bedroom). I connect with you and your words. I was brought up with borderline hoarding, and busy, business running parents who did not teach me about being tidy. Not blaming them as it’s all they knew. I’ve been working on the balance of running my own business, mom, homemaker and wife life for about 5 years. I have always thought “I’m too busy to clean” or “I should be working” But your right, it’s time to shift my way of thinking that is deeply embedded in me. I lost my mum, Aunt and brother within 18 months. We also moved during that time and I was the lucking recipient of all three estates! I was drowning in grief and STUFF! 6 skips later, I’m now onto putting things in boxes for my cousins and the rest for charity or the rubbish bin. I spend an hour a day on it, then walk away. Thanks for sharing these thoughts, again - great to have them summed up. I'm on the same journey in the sense of making small changes in my daily habits. Started decluttering 2+ years when my little one was one and maintaing our small home made me spend all my extra time around tidying day after day. If I didn't do it but went out instead, I was frustrated with the mess, clutter that waited for me at home. So I realized less time will require less time to tidy up and I can put that time towards quality time with my family. That's how I became more conscious about also what I let to circle into our home. I have more to goas I'm not finished with each room yet but love, love, love seeing the results I focused on so far.
    Your idea about choices how bad choices will make us do more bad choices and good ones will lead to more good choices - it reminded me of a saying I used to find and kept: "energy goes where attention goes".
    Whatever we feed with our energy, be that good or bad choices, 'so called' - we'll see more of that.
    Great reminder that good choices need more of a push. That's so true and is my experience too that the impact on our mental health, when we make those tiny but regular daily pushes is truly worth it - I feel better and my family around me does too. 💛

      Try not to look at "all the stuff". That can be overwhelming and discouraging.
      Set yourself up for success by picking a veeeeeerrrryyy simple target that you're guaranteed to achieve. Maybe set a goal to remove ONE thing from your house every weekend. Doesn't matter if it's as small as a bobby pin or as large as a chair. The key is to set an achievable goal. This will put wind in your sails without putting you under pressure. When you've decluttered one thing for a while, then move to two or three.
      Or, maybe pick a drawer as a target if you're able. Start small.
      You can do it! 💪

I have gotten rid of so much stuff that has not gotten any use, and its making my life so much cleaner. Listening to your videos really helps me solidify my possession goals. Thank you so much!

    I find making my bed every morning helps me more and gets me going. I am disabled, so I can do 2 hours max a day. This time of year home takes a backseat to outdoor ti e and gardening. It also helps if someone is home with me, my husband helping to do things in the house or my mom keeping the pig occupied. Being alone kills my motivation. That may have to do with being fearful of hurting myself. I like a weekly list. One part has things by room weekly and a section of daily things to do and a daily check off, like a kids chore chart. Crossing things off or checking it off, helps motivation !ND productivity. Even if it does not look like a lot, I have a way to visually see what I did to motivate me. Fell off the wagon after having a surgical procedure over a week ago.

    Well, this vid is coming up on a year ago... I have been a follower for a minute, but wish I had seen this vid first.. Thank you, Kallie for your story, for this indepth information. I strongly believe all of what you convey here, as I have been decluttering for the past 6 years, slowly but surely gathering my sons personal items together and organizing their stuff from all the years of school, sports, etc. I have helped 3 of my friends move and declutter lol borderline hoarders, they know it. My childhood home was really something to tackle and after my mother passed.. I also helped a family when their mom passed and that was an eye opener... it made me think of how I wouldn't want to burden my sons with my stuff after I am gone. I am only 60 years young. I feel I look and feel younger than I appear, but I hope to be here as long as I can for my sons who are in their mid 20's. It goes by fast, sounds like a cliche, but it does fizzle on by....

    • @Tbland72
      @Tbland72 2 роки тому +1

      @@dianejones4276 one box, one corner…one small area at a time. Stay in one room. If you tend to ping pong room to room (literally) out loud remind yourself to stop, make a spot for that other room and stay put until you’re ready to stop. Then put things away in that other room.
      One big point…don’t beat yourself up if/when you fail. It’s OKAY!!! Just take it in stride, keep pushing forward and don’t allow others to get in your head and convince you you’ll never change. You can and will. You just have to want it for yourself.
      The places I ALWAYS keep clean are the bathroom and the top of my bed/bedroom. My bedroom is my sanctuary and the bathroom is just, well, the bathroom and I don’t want to brush my teeth in funk.
      YOU CAN DO THIS!!! I BELIEVE IN YOU!!! ❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️
      Just take small steps at first then gradually start taking giant strides. 😁

    Definitely agree. I go thru such a roller coaster of depression when I think to much about the disorganization and the clutter in my home. I have so much to declutter and organize that it’s so overwhelming. I get going then fail to complete processes because I have to stop and do dinner or go do something like go to bed cause I have to go to work the next day. Then I’m so tired after work that after dinner when I get home I just vegetate. Your sharing does motivate me after watching you. I need the motivation daily I’m finding out. I was so happy to discover you today, Kallie! I will tell everyone I know about you including my friend Jen (whose son's birthday is today BTW)! I am immensely thankful for this video (second one by you I saw)🙏 I have been in the process of decluttering the house for almost five months...most of the items have been in the family for decades & one of my parents, specifically, saved everything & used to teach me, frankly, to have the same "collector" mentality. Therefore, it has been such a challenge for me to reverse this thought process & behavior, ending the cycle as they say. I even have been reminding my eleven-year-old son (my only child) that saving a reasonably limited number of items is the way to have a positive lifestyle. Because of these wonderfully beneficial videos, I will implement the practices you suggested in this one (such as cleaning the kitchen sink routinely before getting to sleep) as well as convey to my son your crucial points about the concerning mental--and physical--health "impacts" of clutter. Earlier today, the first of your videos I noticed was the one about "53 things to declutter" & it was the first one I saw. Thank you for reading this lengthy comment. Best wishes from NY😊

    Your future self idea has been very impactful and has helped me with procrastination, cleaning and meal planning. I think of how happy and relieved future me would be if I get something done in the present. That ALWAYS motivates me when I'm tempted to put something off. It does annoy me at times 😀, but I'm always happy afterwards. Have also taught others this principle.

    I am consciously thinking of decluttering and it can be overwhelming. I get the emotional and mental toll that clutter can cause. Now that I want to tackle this, I stay up all night with distracting my mind with movies and UA-cam News outlets. I sleep into the afternoon which makes starting the project of getting rid of the clutter gets put off because starting it too late won’t be enough time. I am in vicious cycle!!!

    Hey Kallie, Thank you for sharing. All good stuff as always. I am a subscriber to your "Have your today self do something TONIGHT that your tomorrow self will appreciate " situation. I always fill my tea kettle with water and set it on the (cold) stove before bed, this way all I have to do in the morning is turn it on to boil the water. Writing this seems so minimal in the grand scheme of things...but I am always happy that the water is ready to go in the am!

    I have reached my breaking point as far as my mental health is concerned and the clutter of my home is a HUGE factor - in my opinion, the most impactful factor. My husband and I have made a plan to get our house complete (renovations have been such a long journey for a variety of reasons) . . . but now we have a real deadline because we have friends coming to live with us in 6 weeks! Having this time crunch is forcing us to get it done now but it is also a huge blessing! We had a plan to play a game of "musical chairs" of sorts for rooming our two boys (7 and 4), but that whole plan has been adjusted. This will be the second time we've had people live with us but it's been a year since they moved out and this year has been such a struggle for me. Thank YOU for all that you do to show REAL life, give motivation, but also encouragement with a challenge to go and do it. Getting goosebumps and a boost of "let's tackle this" attitude is fleeting, but what you are teaching and helping us all with in your content IS . . . LIFE CHANGING!!!! So, I will send messages and comment because you deserve the THANK YOU . . . THANK YOU Kallie!!!

    I am working on decluttering my home. While working full time during the school year, going back to college, and getting my last two children graduated from high school, and living life, I have found that I really need to streamline everything to be able to do those things that NEED to be done. I am slowly getting my home (mostly newly remodeled) organized and getting rid of the junk that we do NOT need. It leaves more time for fun things and really makes me think about the things I/we bring into our home. I am a crafty and sewing person, so I would buy things that I might use or were a good deal. I am now trying to only buy what I need. I got into Dollar Tree crafts just before I started college, so those things are sitting around not being used, but I am going to work on them while I am off this summer. I am also trying to clean up after I am done with a project instead of just pushing it to the side for another day. Little by little! I love waiting for your videos each week! Thank you for inspiring me and so many others!

    Yes! What you are saying is 100% true for me. Guilt is terrible for a person to feel and I guilt myself when I don’t clean up my home. I recently came down with Covid and I really felt the worst I have ever felt due to illness. My sister had to tell me that I had to give my body what it wanted instead of listening to my mind saying you need to do laundry, the dishes, dust and vacuum. It’s a real wake call when you kid sister gets on you about your health.
    In no way am I saying that decluttering and cleaning should be avoided. I’m saying mentally I was in the wrong place, bc I was stressed over the appearance of my home.
