- Marked For Death Abandoned Railroad Crossing Restored ?
First some railway crossing gets destroyed by Hurricane Irma by breaking all the crossing gates in 2017 (Link to video below). Then, the last 12 miles of the CSX Homestead Subdivision were officially abandoned on March 2019 ( The last 12 miles begin from here South ). And now it is officially on the chopping block with a recently installed stop sign on the train tracks which I assume CSX placed. Not to mention there are 10 feet tall weeds and trees growing between the rails along with rotting cross ties and missing rail spikes along the tracks going South! The signals have all been folded up and the crossing gates removed in addition to the stop sign. The last train to use this line was in 2016 and it was for storage.
This line was built in 1926 by Seaboard Air Line to bring passenger service to Homestead, Florida and connected with the Miami extension of the Overseas Railway parallel to US 1 in FL City. In 1929, it became a freight line and 2016 was the last time it saw activity; removal of the stored hoppers on the line.

Abandoned Railroad restored back to life
Seen a article online from November that said that CSX formally abandoned it
They abandoned the line?
they did that back in 2019
I'm guessing they just cleared the weeds from the line to do some kind of study on the line to see if it's feasible for commuter rail. But the line will probably have to be completely rebuilt. Doesn't mean anything will happen soon or at all. The county may have just gotten on them to clear the weeds because it's an eyesore.
I'm afraid it's just a dream, Roly......... Wish it wasn't so.
Thank you Railrol for recording the events surrounding the S Line in South Miami Dade County. Only you are doing this. The story of this line just gets weirder and weirder. Are they going to restore this line or are they not going to restore it? That said, I still am 💯 percent convinced that CSX doesn’t care and doesn’t have a thing to do with any restoration and wouldn’t shed a tear if it was removed. If anyone would know what is happening it’s GravelyDon.
That's A Lot of Weeds They need to clean up BEFORE They think of Restoring it.

It's only a matter of time before that line turns into a commuter rail. Maybe in our lifetime!

Looks like no progress. I wonder if they will ever reopen in the future?
The Homestead Subdivision looks the same at this crossing that it has looked at the other crossings that you have shown us recently. Somehow the weeds and plant growth were sprayed with weed killer but nothing else has been done to remove the dead plant material and no improvements have been made to the trackage. Hope pf seeing any railroad activity on this subdivision is fading rapidly.
They still plan on doing work to it im sure.
What potential customer is on this line?
My guess would be that CSX was told by the county to spray. Or the county did it in answer to complaints. Either way, CSX ain't gonna do nuthin' unless it'll make money.
There were probably complaints about the vegetation. This line is DOA, and it will probably a walking trail or bus line. 😢
This looks pretty scuzzy especially when they spray but don't cut anything. In fact the crossing signals look like they're about to be consumed by the sugar cane. In fact the scene looks like some Grade B movie shot in the 1970s how about some killer ants that live in an old sugar refinery. Sad to say this area looks like it will be singing Blue Christmas
