I don't understand this view in USA regarding working from home... I always work a lot more from home than in office where there's just so much talk, distractions, coffe and coffe talk.... At home, specially working in programming and mentally challenging stuff, we can really focus....
Maybe for programming you can focus more at home. But for a ton of jobs there’s this thing called synergy. The book named Drive has some examples companies that have different groups of workers but also promotes synergy and inter group work. For instance, most students in college I know and from my own experiences online classes lets you study at home. Sure you can focus but there’s ZERO synergy or learning from each other. Any communication between students are artificial and meaningless essentially. Some students prefer zero social interaction whereas others learn from social interaction and listening to questions etc. People say oh if you have an online class you can still ask questions. It’s like no. I’m not going to email back and forth over a question. Now I will stay after class and talk for an hour about a question and gain a much deeper understanding of something then I otherwise would. Sure focus is important. I get easily distracted too so I understand. But working at home I don’t see people interacting as much as they perhaps otherwise would or work with other groups to solve things. My brother does auditing. Some days he works from home but it’s not really to focus more but the benefit is not driving into work. But he works more in the office normally especially as they’re training him or he’s still learning. With AI it really makes me wonder how many jobs will be ended by just letting computers really focus and computers can self program.

What Eric is missing would be that I cannot work during an hour long commute to and from his workplace, and I cannot afford to nourish myself well at the location he has decided to coagulate everything for marketing (investor) purposes. Work/life, at home I can scratch my dog, and go back to working. I have MY fridge, MY seat , MY ass kicking internet, Skype, GoToMeeting,, and many other collaborative tools that make my company more profitable than his. My company pays no rent, no electricity, and no ecological fees for all the cars they bring online twice every day. Working hard is easier if I can go from sleep to shower to desktop, in fewer than 20 steps. No wonder hes' had so many jobs....he spends too much time in his car!
Robert, What you miss is that the commute is the most valuable part of very many people's day: It is two blessed periods of privacy to use as they choose. Even if they're confined to their car for 100 minutes out of two one hour drives, that is peace and quiet, one's own chosen radio, with news and features, or study time with tapes. All of those are great personal benefits.

I have been working with AI systems for the past two years and I have to say we need 100’s of times more compute power to meet today’s hyped up expectations. AI is amazing but way too overhyped.
I foresee highly expert AI specialists. You get a published trained AI like Dolphin which is about 26 gigs in size and run it on Linux. You write a description of the emphasis of business it is to prioritize. Like marketing. Then fine tune the LLM with this description and now you have a telemarketer that stays on track and doesn’t hallucinate. It has a name and it’s indistinguishable from a human you only know through telecommunications. It could respond to the random comments and small talk convincingly and still steer the conversation towards the subject at hand.

I don't understand this view in USA regarding working from home... I always work a lot more from home than in office where there's just so much talk, distractions, coffe and coffe talk.... At home, specially working in programming and mentally challenging stuff, we can really focus....

Maybe for programming you can focus more at home. But for a ton of jobs there’s this thing called synergy. The book named Drive has some examples companies that have different groups of workers but also promotes synergy and inter group work.
For instance, most students in college I know and from my own experiences online classes lets you study at home. Sure you can focus but there’s ZERO synergy or learning from each other. Any communication between students are artificial and meaningless essentially. Some students prefer zero social interaction whereas others learn from social interaction and listening to questions etc.
People say oh if you have an online class you can still ask questions. It’s like no. I’m not going to email back and forth over a question. Now I will stay after class and talk for an hour about a question and gain a much deeper understanding of something then I otherwise would.
Sure focus is important. I get easily distracted too so I understand. But working at home I don’t see people interacting as much as they perhaps otherwise would or work with other groups to solve things.
My brother does auditing. Some days he works from home but it’s not really to focus more but the benefit is not driving into work. But he works more in the office normally especially as they’re training him or he’s still learning.
With AI it really makes me wonder how many jobs will be ended by just letting computers really focus and computers can self program.

What Eric is missing would be that I cannot work during an hour long commute to and from his workplace, and I cannot afford to nourish myself well at the location he has decided to coagulate everything for marketing (investor) purposes. Work/life, at home I can scratch my dog, and go back to working. I have MY fridge, MY seat , MY ass kicking internet, Skype, GoToMeeting,, and many other collaborative tools that make my company more profitable than his. My company pays no rent, no electricity, and no ecological fees for all the cars they bring online twice every day. Working hard is easier if I can go from sleep to shower to desktop, in fewer than 20 steps. No wonder hes' had so many jobs....he spends too much time in his car!

What you miss is that the commute is the most valuable part of very many people's day: It is two blessed periods of privacy to use as they choose. Even if they're confined to their car for 100 minutes out of two one hour drives, that is peace and quiet, one's own chosen radio, with news and features, or study time with tapes.

I'm old and I watched a show/movie about the Highwaymen and old Bonnie and Clyde movie and while I watching it I was drawn back to when I was a kid. No one had air-conditioning just ceiling fans that would cut your hand off if you raised it too high. Old black and white TV with 3 channels and bad reception. Everybody had their windows in their house raised to keep Cool. I would go back to those days in a nanosecond.!! you can have these times to live in. I have been working with AI systems for the past two years and I have to say we need 100’s of times more compute power to meet today’s hyped up expectations. AI is amazing but way too overhyped.
I foresee highly expert AI specialists. You get a published trained AI like Dolphin which is about 26 gigs in size and run it on Linux. You write a description of the emphasis of business it is to prioritize. Like marketing. Then fine tune the LLM with this description and now you have a telemarketer that stays on track and doesn’t hallucinate. It has a name and it’s indistinguishable from a human you only know through telecommunications.
It could respond to the random comments and small talk convincingly and still steer the conversation towards the subject at hand.

That man is a very dangerous man. I am horrified by his candor, concerning death and destruction. Russia wasn't destroying Ukrainian women and children. Besides that, he is no one that should be helping to attack Russia or anyone else. Seriously, who is he really? I can't believe what he is saying. He needs to be investigated. Follow his money, and his associations. What has he been involved with, and who is he talking to behind the scenes. Google didn't take this interview off for him saying they are lazy, it was because their former CEO is a crazy man who wants to take over the world using AI. WTF!!!
The theory of having your employees/workers
work hard has been done for millennials.
Priblem is the workers were never rewarded with a middle class wage.
From the late 1940s to the late 1970s there was a muddle class.
But greedy corporate heads sent jobs to China, so China could build a large military.
These corporate heads were never Americans, and our so called founding fathers were naive, they didn't understand the human nature of greed, which is an insatiable sin of gluttony.
That would make almost everyone obsolete to economic growth. If everyone had that ability at their fingertips.
This guy has lost all credibility, when he engaged in "saving" yachts of sanctioned Russian oligarchs in 2022 and 2023. Shame on this traitor.
