To be fair, Ryan Leaf did turn out to be a franchise changing player. They don't go 1-15 in 2000 without royally screwing the pooch by selling the farm to move up one position for that turkey. Pretty good and pretty even handed and fair. I have one correction and it s about pronounciation. Art Schlicter’s last name is pronounce Shleester. You just mentioned him in passing but don’t seem to know much about him. As a guy who attended Ohio State one year behind him, I know quite a lot. You could see Art might have problems even at OSU, as he was the typical arrogant, privileged athlete. That is where his gambling problems started, which led to two jail stints. Even without this, however. the odds were stacked against him as, Frank Kush, from Arizona State, took over as Colts coach during his rookie year. Kush also saw fit to draft his quarterback at ASU, Mike Pagel in the same draft. So, Art really had no chance, because, as soon as he struggled, Pagel took his place and it went that way his entire career. He may have still imploded, due to his gambling issues (Which seemed to get much worse after he was benched), but he never really got much of a chance. Watching a Colts preseason game, in Art’s rookie year, it was apparent that Kush preferred Pagel, and that is who he went with throughout Art’s career. Would Art have done better for n a different situation? I guess we’ll never know.
