      He definitely only did one playthrough of the game and judged the entirety on that. It's evident by some of the misinformation in this Review like TTD being useless for melee, which is just the opposite, or his complete lack of understanding of how the skill system ACTUALLY works in the game. Persuasion and Intimidate, for example, have VERY real impact on combat scenarios when leveled to even 20 or 40 (AKA Novice and Competent ranks).

      It's a valid criticism. Party members who have no independence or plot relevance tend to feel less like characters and more like window dressing. But I feel the complete lack of romance options breaks that trend somewhat, allow me to explain.
      Typically in games like these we're given options for romance of some description with the characters. When Parvati is introduced, what did you anticipate? I was under the impression that she was the first option and I only had that impression because I'd been conditioned by these RPGs to expect it. Instead she tells you shes not even into that stuff, and also she likes this other person who- when you meet them- you learn is just a better person than you no matter what you've chosen up to this point. Junlei dedicated everything to keeping a whole community alive and all you did was shoot some people and irreparably interfere with the lives of strangers.
      This leans into the flaws Yahtzee stated, namely the constant shooting and murdering you're kinda just expected to do. It uses the tropes of similar games in a way I'd liken to parody. Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, and Knights of the Old Republic all did this. It's just sort of a given. The reason stated here is just that the world is such a harsh place that you're just required to be armed- essentially the same excuse as Fallout, and it's just that: an excuse. But it's an excuse to provide a style of gameplay that we've grown accustomed to. It would be hard to make an anti-capitalist Fallout parody and then remove the Fallout-like combat style. At that point the parody is gone, and so is it's appeal to Fallout's huge audience.

      That's a very big assumption, especially considering the player's potential ambitions at that point. If they are motivated by saving the colonists and undermining the corporation there's no definitive way to say that Junlei is a better person than you. Especially if you then proceed to help her save her own ship for the time being. Not to mention Parvati doesn't fall for her because of that. Junlei is sweet, flirtatious, persistent and shares a hobby with her. That's why she likes her. The game never gives the player a chance to be those things with her so I dunno, it feels like a raw example for me.

    That slowmo feature seems like a good variation of the turn based mechanic. A bit like Final Fantasy VII.

    Is it just me or is it not a coincidence that Yahtzee's decided to release the sequel to his post-modern retro-futurist satire novel at around the same time Obsidian releases their highly anticipated retro-futurist satire game? Either way I am loving both!

    Everyone is making all these parallels to Fallout, but I really see a lot of Mass Effect and Kotor in it.

    • @geekmechanic1473
      @geekmechanic1473 4 роки тому

      Same even though kotor did it way better. And in truth you're not wrong kotor was extremely successful and was recognised as the best game and mass effect copied kotor and every other rpg did the same.

    Didn’t obsidian also work on knights of the old republic 2 as well where it was depth wise on par but not to well programmed? Cause the ending had like missing stuff and mid game is certain side quest glitches which leaves you stuck in yer ship or on the crime planet?

    I find it funny that i have little to know clue who the villain is, in my story i instantly turned in the doctor and went traveling around the starts till i could take him in for the fun.

    It may or may not be relevant that my husband’s main Outer Worlds game is modeled on and named after Jacques McKeown.
    As a side note, 2H melee benefits from the time slow because it gets you into position. A decent stealth and slowed time means you can get up close and get several swings in before you’re ever noticed.

    To add to the Bethesda/BioWare comparison, Obsidian also did Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords (2004) which imo is better than Bioware’s first Knights of the Old Republic game from 2003. Lucasarts rushed Obsidian instead of giving them the 6 months Obsidian requested to finish the game and they still managed to put out a great product. With the restored content mod it is absolutely one of the best Star Wars stories.

      They were rushed and cheated on both KOTOR 2 and New Vegas, goes to show how capable they are.

      Kotor 1 is recognized as the best of the two and of the time and in my opinion of all time. It makes this game look bad

    Now I'm dreaming of a game designer that can make games as enthralling as ERB. His books were pretty basic and simple, but they all drew me in so well. What a great thing that would be.

    For all the talk of Fallout and Mass Effect, to me this game aesthetically and thematically (big megacorps screwing everything up) feels a lot closer to Borderlands than either of those two.
