I was diagnosed with ADD, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Borderline Personality and my wife has Histrionic Personality Disorder so it's quite an entertaining house hold. We both enjoy watching you so just wanted to say so. Also wondered if you wouldn't mind watching the video I made recently on BPD as I'd be curious on your thoughts. I been self employed since 19 with a hair salon for for 13 years, reptile business and now 3 monetized youtube channels and a drone business as well as photography and being a full time dad. I feel like I am totally crazy but am able to channel that chaos into something good. II also feel that going through so much has given me the tools to be a great dad where as neither of my parents knew what the heck to do with me so I was over beaten and medicated. Now I take supplements but am a little bit aniti pharma.
I want to share that the Keto Diet changed my life. Not only did I get into the best shape of my life, my sleep improved, my mood improved, my breathing improved, my outlook on life improved etc. etc. etc. I'm not a doctor and no expert but I've never done anything that worked more for my well-being than this lifestyle.
I have Schizotypi, and I agree that the diet can help a lot, although I experienced something that felt serious on the KETO diet, so I recommend people who are mentally ill to not do this alone. My problem wasn't keto-flu related.
My wife lives with bipolar type 1. She experienced a very severe course of illness, melancholic stupors, rapid cycling, mania with psychotic features. She was a poor responder to lithium, had a partial response to lamotragine that faded over time. Her psychiatrist has been recommending keto for the last four years, I brushed it off as a fad. Then I was listening to Nassir Ghaemi in podcast and he said something offhand about how the pathogenesis of bipolar is most likely "metabolic" and something about Kraepelin, so I checked out "Lehrbuch der psychiatric" and under dementia praecox there was this entry about"autointoxication" and a whole bunch of stuff about diet in the section on manic depressive illness. That got me thinking, and so we gave it a crack and four months later she is in almost complete remission.
So her psychologist has been telling her to do keto at least to try and you the husband brush it off as a fad until you are CONVINCED that it could be a help and THEN, you decide to try it out. 4 years, to just try something that could be good for her at least for a month or 2. I am not saying this to make you feel guilty, you and your wife have your reasons but trying things out always help. See it as life science of trials and errors.
@@ettab.7838 She spent an entire year in a catatonic stupor, we had to wait for medication and time to move the needle enough for her to be able to try lifestyle interventions. Also some of the medication, in particular the antipsychotics likely made things dramatically worse. In that situation, every decision feels like life and death. We had to find the right medication, get her off the wrong medication and then wait for the episode to end before we could try things like diet. She went through horrific withdrawals, dependance on the medications that helped and a whole host of other setbacks. If we had to do it over again I think we would have just waited out the episodes but when you're in it it seems really irresponsible when the person is so violently ill.
Awesome to hear. I’m bipolar 2. I do the carnivore diet. I tried keto first and did feel amazing but still had some minor issues. Namely GI issues. I kept researching and came across the carnivore diet for bipolar and my mind was blown. I eat only meat products and intermittent fasting. It has saved my life. I’m 39, single mom, never felt this good in my life. And I’m also a recovering addict as well. Sober 5 years. This feeling on the carnivore diet is a million times better than any drug or drink I’ve been on. Happy for you and your wife success!! 🎉

@@ettab.7838 this is where I’m at right now with my wife. I have bipolar and I know it works but she thinks it’s BS. It would be so much easier if she understood and kept me in check. I have to do this alone and sometimes it’s so difficult not to cave… but if she were there to tell me NO I’d likely stay on it. Anyway, im still trying and at least mostly succeeding.
I love the keto diet. I am not longer on medication for depression and anxiety. I will make one warning. Keto often leads down the rabbit hole of intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting has been a wonderful tool, but I wanted to fast longer as I was seeing these people doing 21 and even 30 day fasts. I have found that fasting for longer than a day or so puts me in a hypomanic state almost every time, and it can be kind of scary. I am not saying this happens to everyone of course, but do what works for you and don't get caught up comparing yourself to others especially when it comes to fasting. You don't have to fast 30 days, but a simple 16/8 intermittent fast can be a wonderful addition.
Same here! I’ve developed mania after extreme fasting for too long and not being on a ketogenic diet! Now I’m just doing Keto diet and I’m scared of fasting…
i kinda do an intermittent fast, but keto ime is much more slow compared to gluco diet, so one meal a day is like, fine. two would probably be better so i didn’t feel as overstuffed after eating, but it’s much less of an issue with making the calories cover the whole day compared to glucose
@@sueyu3603 for me, a stick of butter most days for calories, occasionally something else, and a lot of cheese (which is a complete protein if you eat enough). tofu and tempeh occasionally. i don’t worry about fiber because my gut literally has no change regardless of the amount so you might benefit from a supplement or getting more veggies than i eat.
theres a youtuber "living well with schizophrenia" that has schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder that has been doing keto for 4 months with success. It must be pretty effective if someone with comorbid disorders is having such good results. I don't have schizoprenia or bi polar (and not keto), but I still find it fascinating.. I have a special diet for my own needs that has been working well for me (15 years) but majority people assume i have an eating disorder. So i love hearing about other dietarily different folks and how they utilize food to help alleviate their chronic concerns.
Please get his vitamin D tested and ask his doctor to recommend a good high strength supplement if necessary. It could make a difference. @@AdieKhan-gv1xx
Schizoaffective is when a person has schizophrenia AND another mental health disorder. Schizophrenia is when that is their only mental health disorder. She has bipolar w schizoaffective disorder.

Bipolar 1 here - keto changed my life. My symptoms were hugely improved on the diet. I was on it for 6 years before returning to a normal diet. It didn't cure my bipolar, but it cured my brain fog (it hasn't returned since going off the diet), which was actually the most debilitating symptom of the disorder for me.
Lauren is doing SO well on the keto diet. It's a pleasure seeing the changes in her. She's almost off her meds. For those who had to take high doses of meds, there is no question that being on a keto regime is healthier than they were.
Im schizoaffective and been using keto for about 7 years now and it's changed my life for the better with not only weight loss but mood stability etc. Ive been able to lower my dose and change meds that were les strong in side effects.
I have lost a 110lbs in 14 months from doing a very strict Ketogenic diet, which is amazing, but I did it for my severe treatment resistant depression which I have had for 27 years. Debilitating and chronic illness. I was in near remission for the first 5-6 months from the diet. Then I slumped back into a moderate depression…though much better than before keto. Also I have been able to cut back my medication significantly and a goal of mine is to get off of them completely. Mirapex, and Klonopin. Now I am just trying to work with a dietitian and get back on track and achieve remission again. I am still feeling pretty good relatively even with this mild depression and being in very high therapeutic levels of ketosis…much better than before starting keto. I highly recommend it for all people struggling with severe chronic mental illness and also to lesser degrees. In conjunction with their medications and strive over a long period of time, to reduce their medications with their Psychiatrist…very slowly…and for some…maybe able to get off of them completely and rely on the ketogenic diet as their main therapy.
@@krzysztof4543 I'm sorry. What I meant was it was the first time in a while psychiatrists had a new tool to use. Antidepressants have helped plenty of people but I know they've also caused enormous harm, especially during and after withdrawal. Hopefully in future insurance companies will allow us to choose the equally effective option of therapy.
I'm so glad that the information about connection between what we eat and how our brain works is finally getting out to the wide audience. A few weeks ago I attended a conference in Monaco, where two psychiatrists who work with severe cases of depression were showing results of studies related to nutrition and supplements helping with depression. I myself as a person with bipolar 2 am constantly trying to improve my eating and lifestyle habits to aleviate my severe depressive episodes. Hang on in there, gyus, we will make it through!
A few decades ago doctors laughed at us for talking about food and the gut microbiome. Now the arrogant mofos are teaching us about it like they invented naturopathy. It's hard not to hate medicine sometimes.
I am not on keto, but once I eliminated refined carbs and ate the smallest amount of sugar, my depression went away. I mainly eat veggies, fruits, legumes, eggs, fish, and tofu. I had reoccurring depression, and now I will always limit my refined carbs and sugar. I feel amazing ❤. It’s like my body allows me to always have a positive attitude-and when I get upset or stressed, I bounce back SO EASILY.
yes. its possible. eating healthy can cure alot. some people do carnivore, arthritis gone. some do keto, schizophrenia symptons gon. some eat healthy I see legumes, eggs, fish as healthy. its not all black and white the people living longest in the world ( blue zones) eat what you eat
Bipolar disorder is not a mood disorder, fundamentally. Research is rapidly arriving at this conclusion. It is an intracellular energy dysregulation disorder - of which the mood symptoms are a direct reflection of. Specifically, BD is a neurometabolic dysregulation disorder with a specific psychiatric profile or phenotype of marked mood instability. Physiological energy goes up and down, then mood and outward behavior follow nearly 1:1. Regulate the body, and psychobehavioral symptoms have no choice but to follow. A metabolically healthy body creates an inhospitable environment for BD symptoms. You will not find a person symptomatic with BD that has no evidence of metabolic dysfunction. Therefore, the field we must reframe how we view and treat this disorder. Every single candidate mechanism is biological in nature, meaning any meaningful treatment will necessarily target the same dysfunctional pathways. Individualized medicine and a full-body, full-systemic medical assessment is required to identify individual differences needed for effective care. This is essential for long term improvement and may offer hope of true remission.
I can definitely attest to keto improving my bipolar II moods, as well as my brain fog. I did unfortunately have to stop keto, but I've stuck with a relatively low carb diet and avoiding added/refined sugars and most simple carbs, so I still see benefits like mental clarity from decreased inflammation and fewer blood sugar-related mood swings. Keto, when done correctly and responsibly, can be life-changing. And refined carbs are the frickin' devil. Thank you for another top quality educational video, Dr. Marks!
I'm very glad that you produced this podcast. You're bringing an important message to a large audience. Here are a few things that most proponents of medical keto say: 1. If you have a potential for serious symptoms, don't attempt a medical keto diet on your own. It may affect appropriate medication levels, for example. Or it may trigger a symptom at least temporarily. 2. There are many high fiber, high nutrient, low carbohydrate vegetables. It's possible to eat a lot of vegetables on the keto diet. 3. Most people recommending keto seem to recommend adequate, moderate protein, not super high protein. 4. It can be useful to work with a keto nutritionist or coach who can help you find a specific implementation of a keto diet that works for you. I'm not at all an expert, but I've been consuming many videos and other resources on this subject, and these are a few tidbits I've picked up. Thank you.
I started the ketogenic diet after a full bipolar mental break this last winter. I was so so sick before I started. Within a week, I completely popped out of the mental break and my brain started to heal. Learning how to do the diet has been a little hard - mostly in the beginning - but so worth it, especially as we start heading into fall, which is a difficult time for many people with bipolar disorder. Thanks for putting this video out!! It will be helpful for a lot of people. Also, if you do the diet, take sugar free electrolytes! Especially at the beginning, it will help with keto flu (I take a sugarless electrolyte powder I found on Amazon).
I've been closely watching the journey of a channel called Living Well With Schizophrenia. The person running the channel has schizoaffective disorder and has been documenting her journey of trying to treat her mental illness with the ketogenic diet. She is now transitioning completely off of her anti-psychotic medications. It's pretty incredible to see the difference one year has made in her life. Highly recommend if you're curious about that kind of content.

Great video! So much information packed into 7 minutes and 55 seconds! I have schizophrenia and medical keto has changed my life as well. It wasn’t all easy (I developed keto rash and muscle cramping) but it is worth it. I had to drink electrolytes and more water for the muscle cramps. I also put baking soda in body lotion and rubbed it on my back where I had the keto rash to alleviate the itching. Pretty quick fixes, and then I was back on my keto journey! Medical keto is a great way to put schizophrenia in remission. I can’t thank you enough, Dr. Tracey Marks, for sharing this video and getting the word out!
I eat salmon and shrimp, and I plan on eating crab when I go to the beach with my family this summer. I use Carb Manager (free app with the option to subscribe for recipes) to keep track of my macros. Seafood isn’t very high fat, so I use Carb Manager to make sure my ratios or percentages are still within medical keto range (making sure your other meals for the day are higher in fat than seafood is will help). A family member is going through a severe bipolar depression. In the last 4 months I’ve switched to a ketogenic diet and am impressed with the weight loss AND the noticeable mental clarity. I’ve been wondering if it could help them with their bipolar symptoms. This vid and research is perfect timing. Look at the one- and two-year published results of the Virta diabetes reversal study; soon to be publishing their 5-year results of this large interventional study. CVD and inflammation markers go down on keto. Nutrients are plenty available in keto and it's applicable to different diet types.

I tried keto and it was awful. I can barely remember how I felt mentally because physically I felt terrible. I have IBS (as I've only recently discovered), so a lot of low-carb swaps made my digestion worse, which made my mood worse. It wasn't the keto "flu"-I was just dehydrated and alternating between constipated and diarrhea. It was like my body wasn't absorbing any of the food properly. This year, I've prioritized higher protein intake, smaller portions, and eating 3-4 times a day (every 3-4 hours at most until bedtime). This is different from the previous diets I tried that encouraged me to eat smaller mounts more frequently in the day (the "3-5 small meals" idea). Because all my metabolic markers in my blood work have been normal the last five years, it's less necessary for me to give keto another try.
Were you supplementing with electrolytes? I started keto and this sounded like my exact situation, then i started supplementing with electrolytes and it's a game changer. On hard workout days i will cycle in a little more complex carbs
I have IBS as well and wanted to try keto like a few friends of mine. I also happen to have migraines. Before trying, I discussed with the doctors that I see for both conditions. Result: the two advised me against it. Coincidentally, adding extra fibers and proteins to my diet make wonders. I am also eating a few food gluten-free (pasta, bread and cakes) and have to avoid lactose completely. The rest I am doing something similar to you and the FODMAP guideline helped me target which foods I really have to be careful about. I am happy for my friends when they see the results but well... we all have to do what works for each of us (and not feel guilty about it when it is time to say no).
Electrolytes are extremely important on keto and keto looks different for women too. Sometimes it’s better for women to do carnivore and no intermittent fasting instead of keto. Veggies can be very irritating to our bodies.

Keto did nothing for my schizoaffective and i was keto for 10 years. It destroyed my nervous system and adrenals tho, along with my livers ability to store glycogen for sleep.

@@Iviysuloopeterno I‘m so sorry to hear that 😔 My mom had schizophrenia and she ultimately died because of it. Her thyroid glands had to be removed at some point. She should have taken thyroid hormones but thought the doctors were out to poison her so she didn‘t. Because of that and the side effects of her medications she became so big her lungs were not abled to expand fully into the abdomen any more. It‘s called Pickwick or Obesitas-Hypoventilation-Syndrome. The problem is not that your lungs don’t get enough oxygen in (they do) but that you don‘t exhale enough CO2 any more and it slowly accumulates in your lungs. Therefore the exchange of CO2 for oxygen in your alvaeolae is becoming more and more difficult. We (my sisters and I) saw that she was getting heavier and shorter of breath and very tired. But people were like, yeah she‘s just another fat schizophrenic without self restraint who smokes too much. Her thyroid levels should have been checked regularly but her family doctor didn‘t bother to check on that. In the end her voice became very low and gurgly, and she started to fall asleep mid-sentence. At last she fell unconscious and was brought to the hospital. There finally they found what was wrong with her. My mom was really afraid of hospitals on account of her stays in mental institutions and she didn’t trust doctors so she refused to be treated. She died for days after leaving the hospital in her sleep, basically of suffocation. Schizophrenia is such a debilitating illness, and I don‘t know how my mother had managed to live with it for all those years. I had probably killed myself. She was a very brave woman who had to face immense difficulties in her life but never gave up. The available treatment options for schizophrenia are although absolutely necessary very debilitating and harmful in themselves. But it‘s all we have. For all the many people suffering from schizophrenia out there in this world I hope that these research finding will turn out to be solid. And that outpatient care will offer keto meals-on-wheels because my mother wouldn‘t have been able to stick to keto completely on her own 🙏🏾
Maybe its not about what you eat but what you stop eating. Not just mental health problems but also cancer seems to be just metabolic disorder symptoms
I worry I sound like a snake oil salesman when I talk about my experience with Keto, but it was a game changer for me. I lost over 100lbs, effectively reversed my NAFLD, significantly reduced my anxiety, The severity of my ADHD symptoms were also diminished and the cherry on top is my life-long asthma went away. There was a brief moment I was constipated pretty badly, so I went carnivore for a couple of weeks and that seemed to sort it out. Specifically the inclusion of chicken bone broth in my diet seemed to be the x factor there.
I have schizoaffective disorder. I struggle to learn about keto helping because I abhor diets; I had an eating disorder I just recovered from less than a year ago. But I have found that eating my veggies every day and not having sugar is good for my symptoms. I had chronic constipation my entire life until I cut the sugar and ate veggies daily. I recently messed up bad and ate an entire pint of ice cream which contained 64 grams of sugar, and that was very very bad for me. I just today started feeling functional. So I won't be doing that again. Maybe one day I will be able to try keto, as it would be grand if I didn't have to take medication. I just really hate diets right now.
I lost almost 200 lbs in 12 months. My blood pressure, cholesterol, and A1C are fantastic. In less than 1 month, my A1C went from 9.5 to 4.3. I did have to take B1 because that is commonly found in oats and grains.
Someone please help me. I dont have much time left. I'm damaged by Reglan and short term benzo. Off everything 10 months ago.. every second is a living hell. I'm near death now
Go to a hospital or go inpatient asap. Jordan Peterson went through that and he only ate meat, salt, and water. It took awhile for him to recover but he did.
Given the role that Neuro inflammation, probably plays in COVID-19 related cognitive difficulties do you think that the ketogenic diet would be an appropriate treatment in the wake of COVID-19 infection as a preventative measure?
I believe a large contributor is nutritional deficiency. Also not detoxing, uncontrollable anger is attributed to a Liver that cannot keep up with such a toxic load.

neat, im not brave enough to try going off of my antipsychotic, at least in part because i cannot fall asleep without it no matter how much melatonin i take, and it has not helped with any of my compulsions, but at least i no longer feel like i’m in constant hypoglycemia/feel like i’m dying so ya know, fair bit of improvement.
I am not doing keto, but my food has 1.2g per kilo protein, no added sugar (only from whole fruits), fermented food daily and the rest is basically different vegetables and greens (between 20 and 30 variety per week), around 28g fibers and fasting between 14h - 16h daily. I have plenty of fat for my body to consume. I am bipolar with adhd. Do I really need to eat all those fats. Or I can produce ketone this way I am eating? I am doing this for 2 months and I feel great. Almost no mood swings, bigger focus and concentration.
I'm on a full Carnivore diet and my Schizophrenia has become way more manageable. It's pretty unthinkable how effeciently my symptoms have been dealt with. I would say the effects are nearly on par with my antipsychotics. I almost feel "normal", whatever that means.
Have you stopped taking the medication...or do you intend to stop the medication in the future and maintain the Carnivore diet...because like you, I suffer from schizophrenia and I want advice from those who went through the experience before me.
I drank Fanta at 12am, I had constant urination, sneezing and insomnia until 3am. Rarely do I ever have insomnia. My family says I drink a lot of water, and I do have frequent urination. Could potentially be a reaction to sugar? When I drink beer, it seems I have an allergic reaction (carbs? Sulphites?) Not sure. I have horrific mental health, too. Horrible mood swings, from depression, to talking really fast, to not wanting to talk at all, to anger, to anxiety, to dread, to OCD, etc.
I'd love to know if the Keto diet works well for Bipolar type1? I've read a lot of things that it helps with the depressive side, but what about someone who's more hypomanic/manic?
OMG. My mother is a destructive, maniacal bipolar, hearing voices and so on, and she ate her whole life kg of sugar and chocolate every single day... her doctor told her she was destroying her liver. But she never gave up with carbs. We have no contacts since years btw, for my own sanity
Stay away from her... really!! I have a mom and sister who are both narcissists and I am trying my best to distance myself from them, but it is really hard, so if you've managed to successfully, stay that way!

My sister never realized the whole situation (and I tried so much to bring her out, but every time "I was the odd one" in the eyes of the rest of the family, and the distance just grew); she was "assimilated" in the sick dynamic so yeah, is a "run or succumb" situation. It's all about adaptation of the gut biom, and overcoming carbohydrate addiction...should feel and see the results after 2-3 week's....and to become completely adapted 1 -3 year's.....worth every moment . Full carnivore.

I've been 'mostly keto' for the past 5 years. First thing I learned. Until I made a database of (almost) everything I ate I wasn't even close to the keto diet. We just have too many hidden carbs. I do all my own cooking, eat out very rarely, so this was possible. It's very difficult to stay in ketosis. A few carbs and the pee strips register very low. I kept to strict keto 70% fats, 10% carbs the rest protein for a couple of years. I also intermittently fasted. Take away from this and my five years: my brain worked just fine absolutely no noticeable cognitive changes whether it was using fat or carbs. Second take away, my brain, my discipline and work on my writing project increased markedly and noticeably when at the beginning of October last year I (got off my COVID excuse) started doing 76 minutes 6 days a week on the treadmill. Cardio is king. I also started taking ADHD meds again in November. The effect is as it always has been, very subtle but positive. I've since backed off the 'keto diet' a bit. Instead of 70% fats I now aim to do 55 to 65% 15% carbs the rest protein. Seems good. Intemittent fasting, 15-17 hours a day. I do my treadmill in the evening, ideally after I've stopped eating for the day. This gives my body a better chance to go into ketosis over night. Exercise depletes glycogen in my body. (When I used to sea kayak I'd always deplete this at 90 minutes - hit the wall. You know, I feel so weak how am I ever going to make it back? With my keto, mostly keto and cheating a bit diet there no longer is a wall. I probably do about the same time/distance for the same carb fueled workout but I never feel depleted. A huge plus.) I've spoken with people who've done keto for epilepsy and other psychological reasons. Anecdotally not much change. This is hardly scientific. Weight loss. Even with keto it's calories in pounds on or off. I can steadily lose weight if I eat 1500 -1700 calories/day and do 6 miles on the treadmill. Fats. There are good fats and bad. Olive oil seems the best, I buy the premium brand use it every day. I eat a lot of whole milk cheese. Whole eggs. (Bad fats are bacon, whipped cream, etc... initially I ate some of this junk.) they shot my cholesterol up. This is also why I cut my percentages of fat a bit. I also take a statin, one of the key numbers had shot up to 140, last test it was 90. Keep in mind if a package in the store says Keto? It ain't. Do I think a keto diet can help or cure psychological conditions? I have no clue and I'm not qualified. Having ADHD my consistent baseline has always been: regular sleep/ waking hours, good sleep; eating healthy food, exercise, exercise, exercise. And schedules, diaries, lists, all the work arounds. (I always thought that at some point I'd hire a retired marine drill instructor....) One condition I have been diagnosed for is arthritis. Had it three times diagnosed twice. 18 years ago I had limited movement of my fingers on one hand, couldn't close a tight fist. I couldn't snap my fingers on either hand. Eating healthy, exercise, weight loss (and I got stung by a killer bee) and good sleep seems to have cured it. Seriously. Two of these incidences (they last for several months) were before I tried the keto diet and intermittent fasting. Doctor said it runs in your family, we can't cure it but we can treat it.... It went away. One thing a high fat diet cures: incessant snacking and craving carbs. I just had a colonoscopy and somehow that's thrown me off a bit. I've been over eating, craving carbs, snacking. My intermittent fasting dropped to 10 hours. I'll sort this. I think we all believe we're lazy, addicted to carbs, neurotic, snack to reduce depression, lack discipline about our eating habits. I can flip all of this back on just by increasing my carbs. The effect seems to last longer than the increased carbs. So 25% carbs today? I might struggle for a few days to get back. I've flipped this off so many times I have high confidence high fats and intermittent faster are the key. (I also keep all of that out of my house.) In 2006 I lost 40 pounds by ketosis and kept it off since by healthy eating and exercise. I wasn't aware of what was happening at the time, I just noticed I felt a little warmer after I worked out for three hours in the morning (2 - 3 times/week) and I didn't feel hungry. I'd stay warm until I ate a meal. (My temperature almost never registered higher.) I liked it, the pounds were just dropping off, and they stayed off. In the past three months I focused on dropping my COVID (excuse..) weight, I'm down 14 pounds and stable. This time I'm fully aware of what I'm doing. I think the keys are: higher (good) fats, reduce carbs (but hunt them down! Get rid of highly processed food). They are in all of it.), This turns off the Carbs Monster that's always chasing us. People think I'm disciplined. Fats are the methadone of endless snacking. I do feel hungry, but it's no longer an alarm, it's just a feeling. -- unless I've been eating too many carbs. Intermittent fasting and cardio exercise are great. If you cut your calories you'll lose weight. This of course is not medical advice just what I've done.
Currently no, but it could be an adjunct treatment for metabolic syndrome. Lots of research coming though 6+ RCTS for keto diet and mental health conditions

I have bipolar and tried keto last year. Unfortunately, I'm one of the very few that gets leaky diarrhea (which is common to carnivore diet) when I'm in ketosis. I tried to endure it and took probiotics, took fiber supplements, but they didn't help. I was only able to do it for 2 months because there are a lot of times where I become so anxious when I'm about to fart because there is high probability that it's not just gas. This affects me greatly especially when I'm outside. In those two months though, I was able to lose 15kg and was able to eliminate my hypertension medication. One year later, I was still able to keep my weight since I still try to do keto, but not strict keto. I realize that my body needs a higher percentage of carbs for me not to have diarrhea. Despite not being able to lose more weight (I'm still overweight), doing keto helped me to improve my diet and at least improve some aspect of my physical health.
I believe I have IBS. I’m basically a shut In because I’m afraid I’ll have diarrhea while I’m out in public. I’ve been doing Keto for a month now and have never felt better. Cravings are gone. I still have diarrhea though. No change.
A decent video, but sorry our brain's main fuel source is ketons not glucose as every human being is born in ketosis. Glucogenic is a state of emergency as our normal (original metabolism goes). NO wonder there are so many mental health problems even the medical science advances--the basic knowledge is wrong by experts... This is not good. I thought I've done a cannabis video since then - but I'm not sure without looking. I'm sure there are newer studies but I can't name one. I read them in my newsfeed without saving the references unless I'm using to do a video. Johns Hopkins has a center for Psychedelic research that is a good source of current information. Even though people argue that CBD is not a psychedelic, I think I've seen some CBD info on their site.
I’d like to warn everyone that has had disordered eating in the past: without my drs discretion I saw a lot of UA-camrs talk about KETO for bipolar . I’m Bipolar 2 but had an extremely bad eating disorder for over 10+ years. As I started the diet (and I must say I didn’t talk it over with my Dr) but I started spiraling with my ED. Drs on UA-cam or even “influencers need to be EXTREMELY careful about the content they put on UA-cam or whatever social media. It didn’t even make a big difference for my bipolar symptoms , but maybe that was because I was spiraling down the rabbit hole with my anorexia. Just PLEASE be careful. Remember that medications can cause a lack of vitamins in your body. Be sure to ask your doctor for blood tests to be sure you are healthy enough to deny your body of vegetables. Otherwise im bipolar 2 and take medication also thinking of doing keto

My partner came down with schizophrenia about 5 years ago and it's been hard to get him to change his diet. I've tried recently learned of new antipsychotics that target muscarinic receptors instead of dopamergic ones. So much nonsense. Never had any client experiencing nutrient deficiencies caused by ketogenic diet. You're ditching carbs, carby foods are usually poor in nutrients. Moreover, the claim that the diet's relatively higher fat content can damage the liver is complete BS. Insulin resistance that is carbs are causing metabolic liver dysfunction.

II also feel that going through so much has given me the tools to be a great dad where as neither of my parents knew what the heck to do with me so I was over beaten and medicated. Now I take supplements but am a little bit aniti pharma.
I want to share that the Keto Diet changed my life. Not only did I get into the best shape of my life, my sleep improved, my mood improved, my breathing improved, my outlook on life improved etc. etc. etc. I'm not a doctor and no expert but I've never done anything that worked more for my well-being than this lifestyle.

I have Schizotypi, and I agree that the diet can help a lot, although I experienced something that felt serious on the KETO diet, so I recommend people who are mentally ill to not do this alone. My problem wasn't keto-flu related.

My wife lives with bipolar type 1. She experienced a very severe course of illness, melancholic stupors, rapid cycling, mania with psychotic features. She was a poor responder to lithium, had a partial response to lamotragine that faded over time.
Her psychiatrist has been recommending keto for the last four years, I brushed it off as a fad. Then I was listening to Nassir Ghaemi in podcast and he said something offhand about how the pathogenesis of bipolar is most likely "metabolic" and something about Kraepelin, so I checked out "Lehrbuch der psychiatric" and under dementia praecox there was this entry about"autointoxication" and a whole bunch of stuff about diet in the section on manic depressive illness.
That got me thinking, and so we gave it a crack and four months later she is in almost complete remission.
So her psychologist has been telling her to do keto at least to try and you the husband brush it off as a fad until you are CONVINCED that it could be a help and THEN, you decide to try it out. 4 years, to just try something that could be good for her at least for a month or 2.
I am not saying this to make you feel guilty, you and your wife have your reasons but trying things out always help. See it as life science of trials and errors.
@@ettab.7838 She spent an entire year in a catatonic stupor, we had to wait for medication and time to move the needle enough for her to be able to try lifestyle interventions.
Also some of the medication, in particular the antipsychotics likely made things dramatically worse.
In that situation, every decision feels like life and death. We had to find the right medication, get her off the wrong medication and then wait for the episode to end before we could try things like diet. She went through horrific withdrawals, dependance on the medications that helped and a whole host of other setbacks.
If we had to do it over again I think we would have just waited out the episodes but when you're in it it seems really irresponsible when the person is so violently ill.
Awesome to hear. I’m bipolar 2. I do the carnivore diet. I tried keto first and did feel amazing but still had some minor issues. Namely GI issues. I kept researching and came across the carnivore diet for bipolar and my mind was blown. I eat only meat products and intermittent fasting. It has saved my life. I’m 39, single mom, never felt this good in my life. And I’m also a recovering addict as well. Sober 5 years. This feeling on the carnivore diet is a million times better than any drug or drink I’ve been on. Happy for you and your wife success!! 🎉

I love the keto diet. I am not longer on medication for depression and anxiety. I will make one warning. Keto often leads down the rabbit hole of intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting has been a wonderful tool, but I wanted to fast longer as I was seeing these people doing 21 and even 30 day fasts. I have found that fasting for longer than a day or so puts me in a hypomanic state almost every time, and it can be kind of scary. I am not saying this happens to everyone of course, but do what works for you and don't get caught up comparing yourself to others especially when it comes to fasting. You don't have to fast 30 days, but a simple 16/8 intermittent fast can be a wonderful addition.

i kinda do an intermittent fast, but keto ime is much more slow compared to gluco diet, so one meal a day is like, fine. two would probably be better so i didn’t feel as overstuffed after eating, but it’s much less of an issue with making the calories cover the whole day compared to glucose
@@sueyu3603 for me, a stick of butter most days for calories, occasionally something else, and a lot of cheese (which is a complete protein if you eat enough). tofu and tempeh occasionally. i don’t worry about fiber because my gut literally has no change regardless of the amount so you might benefit from a supplement or getting more veggies than i eat.
theres a youtuber "living well with schizophrenia" that has schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder that has been doing keto for 4 months with success. It must be pretty effective if someone with comorbid disorders is having such good results. I don't have schizoprenia or bi polar (and not keto), but I still find it fascinating.. I have a special diet for my own needs that has been working well for me (15 years) but majority people assume i have an eating disorder. So i love hearing about other dietarily different folks and how they utilize food to help alleviate their chronic concerns.

Bipolar 1 here - keto changed my life. My symptoms were hugely improved on the diet. I was on it for 6 years before returning to a normal diet. It didn't cure my bipolar, but it cured my brain fog (it hasn't returned since going off the diet), which was actually the most debilitating symptom of the disorder for me.
Do you think the brain fog was a result of the medication or the disorder itself?

Lauren is doing SO well on the keto diet. It's a pleasure seeing the changes in her. She's almost off her meds. For those who had to take high doses of meds, there is no question that being on a keto regime is healthier than they were.
Im schizoaffective and been using keto for about 7 years now and it's changed my life for the better with not only weight loss but mood stability etc. Ive been able to lower my dose and change meds that were les strong in side effects.

I have lost a 110lbs in 14 months from doing a very strict Ketogenic diet, which is amazing, but I did it for my severe treatment resistant depression which I have had for 27 years. Debilitating and chronic illness. I was in near remission for the first 5-6 months from the diet. Then I slumped back into a moderate depression…though much better than before keto. Also I have been able to cut back my medication significantly and a goal of mine is to get off of them completely. Mirapex, and Klonopin. Now I am just trying to work with a dietitian and get back on track and achieve remission again. I am still feeling pretty good relatively even with this mild depression and being in very high therapeutic levels of ketosis…much better than before starting keto. I highly recommend it for all people struggling with severe chronic mental illness and also to lesser degrees. In conjunction with their medications and strive over a long period of time, to reduce their medications with their Psychiatrist…very slowly…and for some…maybe able to get off of them completely and rely on the ketogenic diet as their main therapy.

Antidepressants have helped plenty of people but I know they've also caused enormous harm, especially during and after withdrawal. Hopefully in future insurance companies will allow us to choose the equally effective option of therapy.
I'm so glad that the information about connection between what we eat and how our brain works is finally getting out to the wide audience. A few weeks ago I attended a conference in Monaco, where two psychiatrists who work with severe cases of depression were showing results of studies related to nutrition and supplements helping with depression. I myself as a person with bipolar 2 am constantly trying to improve my eating and lifestyle habits to aleviate my severe depressive episodes. Hang on in there, gyus, we will make it through!
A few decades ago doctors laughed at us for talking about food and the gut microbiome. Now the arrogant mofos are teaching us about it like they invented naturopathy. It's hard not to hate medicine sometimes.
I am not on keto, but once I eliminated refined carbs and ate the smallest amount of sugar, my depression went away. I mainly eat veggies, fruits, legumes, eggs, fish, and tofu. I had reoccurring depression, and now I will always limit my refined carbs and sugar. I feel amazing ❤. It’s like my body allows me to always have a positive attitude-and when I get upset or stressed, I bounce back SO EASILY.
yes. its possible. eating healthy can cure alot. some people do carnivore, arthritis gone. some do keto, schizophrenia symptons gon. some eat healthy I see legumes, eggs, fish as healthy. its not all black and white the people living longest in the world ( blue zones) eat what you eat

Bipolar disorder is not a mood disorder, fundamentally. Research is rapidly arriving at this conclusion.
It is an intracellular energy dysregulation disorder - of which the mood symptoms are a direct reflection of. Specifically, BD is a neurometabolic dysregulation disorder with a specific psychiatric profile or phenotype of marked mood instability. Physiological energy goes up and down, then mood and outward behavior follow nearly 1:1.
Regulate the body, and psychobehavioral symptoms have no choice but to follow. A metabolically healthy body creates an inhospitable environment for BD symptoms. You will not find a person symptomatic with BD that has no evidence of metabolic dysfunction. Therefore, the field we must reframe how we view and treat this disorder. Every single candidate mechanism is biological in nature, meaning any meaningful treatment will necessarily target the same dysfunctional pathways.
Individualized medicine and a full-body, full-systemic medical assessment is required to identify individual differences needed for effective care. This is essential for long term improvement and may offer hope of true remission.
I agree the medical system is still living in the dark ages.
Can you give an example of what effective treatment looks like?
I can definitely attest to keto improving my bipolar II moods, as well as my brain fog. I did unfortunately have to stop keto, but I've stuck with a relatively low carb diet and avoiding added/refined sugars and most simple carbs, so I still see benefits like mental clarity from decreased inflammation and fewer blood sugar-related mood swings. Keto, when done correctly and responsibly, can be life-changing. And refined carbs are the frickin' devil.

I'm very glad that you produced this podcast. You're bringing an important message to a large audience.
Here are a few things that most proponents of medical keto say:
1. If you have a potential for serious symptoms, don't attempt a medical keto diet on your own. It may affect appropriate medication levels, for example. Or it may trigger a symptom at least temporarily.
2. There are many high fiber, high nutrient, low carbohydrate vegetables. It's possible to eat a lot of vegetables on the keto diet.
3. Most people recommending keto seem to recommend adequate, moderate protein, not super high protein.
4. It can be useful to work with a keto nutritionist or coach who can help you find a specific implementation of a keto diet that works for you.
I'm not at all an expert, but I've been consuming many videos and other resources on this subject, and these are a few tidbits I've picked up. Thank you.

I started the ketogenic diet after a full bipolar mental break this last winter. I was so so sick before I started. Within a week, I completely popped out of the mental break and my brain started to heal. Learning how to do the diet has been a little hard - mostly in the beginning - but so worth it, especially as we start heading into fall, which is a difficult time for many people with bipolar disorder. Thanks for putting this video out!! It will be helpful for a lot of people. Also, if you do the diet, take sugar free electrolytes! Especially at the beginning, it will help with keto flu (I take a sugarless electrolyte powder I found on Amazon).
I've been closely watching the journey of a channel called Living Well With Schizophrenia. The person running the channel has schizoaffective disorder and has been documenting her journey of trying to treat her mental illness with the ketogenic diet. She is now transitioning completely off of her anti-psychotic medications. It's pretty incredible to see the difference one year has made in her life. Highly recommend if you're curious about that kind of content.

I have schizophrenia and medical keto has changed my life as well. It wasn’t all easy (I developed keto rash and muscle cramping) but it is worth it. I had to drink electrolytes and more water for the muscle cramps. I also put baking soda in body lotion and rubbed it on my back where I had the keto rash to alleviate the itching. Pretty quick fixes, and then I was back on my keto journey! Medical keto is a great way to put schizophrenia in remission.

Hi, do you eat lots of sea foods or not.
I eat salmon and shrimp, and I plan on eating crab when I go to the beach with my family this summer. I use Carb Manager (free app with the option to subscribe for recipes) to keep track of my macros. Seafood isn’t very high fat, so I use Carb Manager to make sure my ratios or percentages are still within medical keto range (making sure your other meals for the day are higher in fat than seafood is will help). I hope this helps!

Functional Medicine is catching on. Elements from TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and Ayurvedic Medicine can help as well. I take an SSRI for depression. I’m guided by a relentless pursuit to thrive.
Look at the one- and two-year published results of the Virta diabetes reversal study; soon to be publishing their 5-year results of this large interventional study. CVD and inflammation markers go down on keto. Nutrients are plenty available in keto and it's applicable to different diet types.

Please be careful if you are on mood stabilizers that can increase the risk of ketoacidosis to life-threatening levels.
I tried keto and it was awful. I can barely remember how I felt mentally because physically I felt terrible. I have IBS (as I've only recently discovered), so a lot of low-carb swaps made my digestion worse, which made my mood worse. It wasn't the keto "flu"-I was just dehydrated and alternating between constipated and diarrhea. It was like my body wasn't absorbing any of the food properly.
This year, I've prioritized higher protein intake, smaller portions, and eating 3-4 times a day (every 3-4 hours at most until bedtime). This is different from the previous diets I tried that encouraged me to eat smaller mounts more frequently in the day (the "3-5 small meals" idea). Because all my metabolic markers in my blood work have been normal the last five years, it's less necessary for me to give keto another try.
Sounds like your electrolytes were low and you need them.
Were you supplementing with electrolytes? I started keto and this sounded like my exact situation, then i started supplementing with electrolytes and it's a game changer. On hard workout days i will cycle in a little more complex carbs

I have IBS as well and wanted to try keto like a few friends of mine. I also happen to have migraines. Before trying, I discussed with the doctors that I see for both conditions. Result: the two advised me against it.
Coincidentally, adding extra fibers and proteins to my diet make wonders. I am also eating a few food gluten-free (pasta, bread and cakes) and have to avoid lactose completely. The rest I am doing something similar to you and the FODMAP guideline helped me target which foods I really have to be careful about.
I am happy for my friends when they see the results but well... we all have to do what works for each of us (and not feel guilty about it when it is time to say no).
Electrolytes are extremely important on keto and keto looks different for women too. Sometimes it’s better for women to do carnivore and no intermittent fasting instead of keto. Veggies can be very irritating to our bodies.

My mom had schizophrenia and she ultimately died because of it. Her thyroid glands had to be removed at some point. She should have taken thyroid hormones but thought the doctors were out to poison her so she didn‘t. Because of that and the side effects of her medications she became so big her lungs were not abled to expand fully into the abdomen any more. It‘s called Pickwick or Obesitas-Hypoventilation-Syndrome. The problem is not that your lungs don’t get enough oxygen in (they do) but that you don‘t exhale enough CO2 any more and it slowly accumulates in your lungs. Therefore the exchange of CO2 for oxygen in your alvaeolae is becoming more and more difficult.
We (my sisters and I) saw that she was getting heavier and shorter of breath and very tired. But people were like, yeah she‘s just another fat schizophrenic without self restraint who smokes too much. Her thyroid levels should have been checked regularly but her family doctor didn‘t bother to check on that.
In the end her voice became very low and gurgly, and she started to fall asleep mid-sentence. At last she fell unconscious and was brought to the hospital. There finally they found what was wrong with her. My mom was really afraid of hospitals on account of her stays in mental institutions and she didn’t trust doctors so she refused to be treated. She died for days after leaving the hospital in her sleep, basically of suffocation.
Schizophrenia is such a debilitating illness, and I don‘t know how my mother had managed to live with it for all those years. I had probably killed myself. She was a very brave woman who had to face immense difficulties in her life but never gave up.
The available treatment options for schizophrenia are although absolutely necessary very debilitating and harmful in themselves. But it‘s all we have.
For all the many people suffering from schizophrenia out there in this world I hope that these research finding will turn out to be solid. And that outpatient care will offer keto meals-on-wheels because my mother wouldn‘t have been able to stick to keto completely on her own 🙏🏾

I worry I sound like a snake oil salesman when I talk about my experience with Keto, but it was a game changer for me.
I lost over 100lbs, effectively reversed my NAFLD, significantly reduced my anxiety, The severity of my ADHD symptoms were also diminished and the cherry on top is my life-long asthma went away.
There was a brief moment I was constipated pretty badly, so I went carnivore for a couple of weeks and that seemed to sort it out. Specifically the inclusion of chicken bone broth in my diet seemed to be the x factor there.
I have schizoaffective disorder. I struggle to learn about keto helping because I abhor diets; I had an eating disorder I just recovered from less than a year ago. But I have found that eating my veggies every day and not having sugar is good for my symptoms. I had chronic constipation my entire life until I cut the sugar and ate veggies daily. I recently messed up bad and ate an entire pint of ice cream which contained 64 grams of sugar, and that was very very bad for me. I just today started feeling functional. So I won't be doing that again. Maybe one day I will be able to try keto, as it would be grand if I didn't have to take medication. I just really hate diets right now.
Rather than looking at is as a diet it's best to think of keto as a lifestyle change

I believe a large contributor is nutritional deficiency. Also not detoxing, uncontrollable anger is attributed to a Liver that cannot keep up with such a toxic load.

neat, im not brave enough to try going off of my antipsychotic, at least in part because i cannot fall asleep without it no matter how much melatonin i take, and it has not helped with any of my compulsions, but at least i no longer feel like i’m in constant hypoglycemia/feel like i’m dying so ya know, fair bit of improvement.
I am not doing keto, but my food has 1.2g per kilo protein, no added sugar (only from whole fruits), fermented food daily and the rest is basically different vegetables and greens (between 20 and 30 variety per week), around 28g fibers and fasting between 14h - 16h daily.
I have plenty of fat for my body to consume. I am bipolar with adhd.
Do I really need to eat all those fats. Or I can produce ketone this way I am eating?
I am doing this for 2 months and I feel great. Almost no mood swings, bigger focus and concentration.
I'm on a full Carnivore diet and my Schizophrenia has become way more manageable. It's pretty unthinkable how effeciently my symptoms have been dealt with. I would say the effects are nearly on par with my antipsychotics. I almost feel "normal", whatever that means.
Have you stopped taking the medication...or do you intend to stop the medication in the future and maintain the Carnivore diet...because like you, I suffer from schizophrenia and I want advice from those who went through the experience before me.
I drank Fanta at 12am, I had constant urination, sneezing and insomnia until 3am. Rarely do I ever have insomnia. My family says I drink a lot of water, and I do have frequent urination. Could potentially be a reaction to sugar?
When I drink beer, it seems I have an allergic reaction (carbs? Sulphites?) Not sure.
I have horrific mental health, too. Horrible mood swings, from depression, to talking really fast, to not wanting to talk at all, to anger, to anxiety, to dread, to OCD, etc.

OMG. My mother is a destructive, maniacal bipolar, hearing voices and so on, and she ate her whole life kg of sugar and chocolate every single day... her doctor told her she was destroying her liver. But she never gave up with carbs. We have no contacts since years btw, for my own sanity
Stay away from her... really!! I have a mom and sister who are both narcissists and I am trying my best to distance myself from them, but it is really hard, so if you've managed to successfully, stay that way!

My sister never realized the whole situation (and I tried so much to bring her out, but every time "I was the odd one" in the eyes of the rest of the family, and the distance just grew); she was "assimilated" in the sick dynamic so yeah, is a "run or succumb" situation. It's all about adaptation of the gut biom, and overcoming carbohydrate addiction...should feel and see the results after 2-3 week's....and to become completely adapted 1 -3 year's.....worth every moment .

Can you do a video about intermittent fasting if that's good for bipolar people? Could could a Bipolar person combine intermittent fasting and keto diet together? Or would that be too much?
I've been 'mostly keto' for the past 5 years. First thing I learned. Until I made a database of (almost) everything I ate I wasn't even close to the keto diet. We just have too many hidden carbs. I do all my own cooking, eat out very rarely, so this was possible. It's very difficult to stay in ketosis. A few carbs and the pee strips register very low. I kept to strict keto 70% fats, 10% carbs the rest protein for a couple of years. I also intermittently fasted. Take away from this and my five years: my brain worked just fine absolutely no noticeable cognitive changes whether it was using fat or carbs.
Second take away, my brain, my discipline and work on my writing project increased markedly and noticeably when at the beginning of October last year I (got off my COVID excuse) started doing 76 minutes 6 days a week on the treadmill. Cardio is king. I also started taking ADHD meds again in November. The effect is as it always has been, very subtle but positive.
I've since backed off the 'keto diet' a bit. Instead of 70% fats I now aim to do 55 to 65% 15% carbs the rest protein. Seems good. Intemittent fasting, 15-17 hours a day. I do my treadmill in the evening, ideally after I've stopped eating for the day. This gives my body a better chance to go into ketosis over night. Exercise depletes glycogen in my body. (When I used to sea kayak I'd always deplete this at 90 minutes - hit the wall. You know, I feel so weak how am I ever going to make it back? With my keto, mostly keto and cheating a bit diet there no longer is a wall. I probably do about the same time/distance for the same carb fueled workout but I never feel depleted. A huge plus.)
I've spoken with people who've done keto for epilepsy and other psychological reasons. Anecdotally not much change. This is hardly scientific.
Weight loss. Even with keto it's calories in pounds on or off. I can steadily lose weight if I eat 1500 -1700 calories/day and do 6 miles on the treadmill. Fats. There are good fats and bad. Olive oil seems the best, I buy the premium brand use it every day. I eat a lot of whole milk cheese. Whole eggs. (Bad fats are bacon, whipped cream, etc... initially I ate some of this junk.) they shot my cholesterol up. This is also why I cut my percentages of fat a bit. I also take a statin, one of the key numbers had shot up to 140, last test it was 90. Keep in mind if a package in the store says Keto? It ain't.
Do I think a keto diet can help or cure psychological conditions? I have no clue and I'm not qualified. Having ADHD my consistent baseline has always been: regular sleep/ waking hours, good sleep; eating healthy food, exercise, exercise, exercise. And schedules, diaries, lists, all the work arounds. (I always thought that at some point I'd hire a retired marine drill instructor....)
One condition I have been diagnosed for is arthritis. Had it three times diagnosed twice. 18 years ago I had limited movement of my fingers on one hand, couldn't close a tight fist. I couldn't snap my fingers on either hand. Eating healthy, exercise, weight loss (and I got stung by a killer bee) and good sleep seems to have cured it. Seriously. Two of these incidences (they last for several months) were before I tried the keto diet and intermittent fasting. Doctor said it runs in your family, we can't cure it but we can treat it.... It went away.
One thing a high fat diet cures: incessant snacking and craving carbs. I just had a colonoscopy and somehow that's thrown me off a bit. I've been over eating, craving carbs, snacking. My intermittent fasting dropped to 10 hours. I'll sort this. I think we all believe we're lazy, addicted to carbs, neurotic, snack to reduce depression, lack discipline about our eating habits. I can flip all of this back on just by increasing my carbs. The effect seems to last longer than the increased carbs. So 25% carbs today? I might struggle for a few days to get back. I've flipped this off so many times I have high confidence high fats and intermittent faster are the key. (I also keep all of that out of my house.)
In 2006 I lost 40 pounds by ketosis and kept it off since by healthy eating and exercise. I wasn't aware of what was happening at the time, I just noticed I felt a little warmer after I worked out for three hours in the morning (2 - 3 times/week) and I didn't feel hungry. I'd stay warm until I ate a meal. (My temperature almost never registered higher.) I liked it, the pounds were just dropping off, and they stayed off. In the past three months I focused on dropping my COVID (excuse..) weight, I'm down 14 pounds and stable. This time I'm fully aware of what I'm doing.
I think the keys are: higher (good) fats, reduce carbs (but hunt them down! Get rid of highly processed food). They are in all of it.), This turns off the Carbs Monster that's always chasing us. People think I'm disciplined. Fats are the methadone of endless snacking. I do feel hungry, but it's no longer an alarm, it's just a feeling. -- unless I've been eating too many carbs.
Intermittent fasting and cardio exercise are great. If you cut your calories you'll lose weight. This of course is not medical advice just what I've done.

You don't develop the disorder from the products themselves. They just aggrevate what's already there.
It’s a genetic disorder, and often brought on by substance use, not carbs.

I have bipolar and tried keto last year. Unfortunately, I'm one of the very few that gets leaky diarrhea (which is common to carnivore diet) when I'm in ketosis. I tried to endure it and took probiotics, took fiber supplements, but they didn't help. I was only able to do it for 2 months because there are a lot of times where I become so anxious when I'm about to fart because there is high probability that it's not just gas. This affects me greatly especially when I'm outside.
In those two months though, I was able to lose 15kg and was able to eliminate my hypertension medication. One year later, I was still able to keep my weight since I still try to do keto, but not strict keto. I realize that my body needs a higher percentage of carbs for me not to have diarrhea. Despite not being able to lose more weight (I'm still overweight), doing keto helped me to improve my diet and at least improve some aspect of my physical health.
I believe I have IBS. I’m basically a shut In because I’m afraid I’ll have diarrhea while I’m out in public. I’ve been doing Keto for a month now and have never felt better. Cravings are gone. I still have diarrhea though. No change.

A decent video, but sorry our brain's main fuel source is ketons not glucose as every human being is born in ketosis. Glucogenic is a state of emergency as our normal (original metabolism goes). NO wonder there are so many mental health problems even the medical science advances--the basic knowledge is wrong by experts... This is not good. in the U.S., it's the fifth most used beta blocker. Metoprolol (both) are #1 and #2. Then #3 is carvedilol.

Keto acidosis is deadly. Ketosis is fine for most people.
If you are on certain mood stabilizers, you are at increased risk of keto acidosis. This should be mentioned here.

I thought I've done a cannabis video since then - but I'm not sure without looking. I'm sure there are newer studies but I can't name one. I read them in my newsfeed without saving the references unless I'm using to do a video. Johns Hopkins has a center for Psychedelic research that is a good source of current information. Even though people argue that CBD is not a psychedelic, I think I've seen some CBD info on their site.
I’d like to warn everyone that has had disordered eating in the past: without my drs discretion I saw a lot of UA-camrs talk about KETO for bipolar . I’m Bipolar 2 but had an extremely bad eating disorder for over 10+ years. As I started the diet (and I must say I didn’t talk it over with my Dr) but I started spiraling with my ED. Drs on UA-cam or even “influencers need to be EXTREMELY careful about the content they put on UA-cam or whatever social media. It didn’t even make a big difference for my bipolar symptoms , but maybe that was because I was spiraling down the rabbit hole with my anorexia. Just PLEASE be careful. Because as you know ppl with mental illness will do anything to feel better. Thanks.

Remember that medications can cause a lack of vitamins in your body. Be sure to ask your doctor for blood tests to be sure you are healthy enough to deny your body of vegetables. Otherwise im bipolar 2 and take medication also thinking of doing keto

My partner came down with schizophrenia about 5 years ago and it's been hard to get him to change his diet. I've tried recently learned of new antipsychotics that target muscarinic receptors instead of dopamergic ones. Can you do a video about this and how these medicines will change his life for the better because he doesn't believe me. So much nonsense. Never had any client experiencing nutrient deficiencies caused by ketogenic diet. You're ditching carbs, carby foods are usually poor in nutrients. Moreover, the claim that the diet's relatively higher fat content can damage the liver is complete BS. Insulin resistance that is carbs are causing metabolic liver dysfunction.

I’m in ketosis now and feeling so much better. I can tell my inflammation is way down. I highly recommend. I am definitely consuming plenty of fiber. I don’t know what she is talking about. I eat a lot of non-starchy vegetables and leafy greens. 🥦 See Dr. Berg or Dr. Ekberg.
