Andy Partridge is that rare musician and songwriter in rock that can make music that stimulates both the brain and the pop loving heart. Such a gifted guy, it's a real crime that more people don't know about XTC these days.
Met him accidentally at a Tower Records in Boston at the release of Apple Venus. Was there just browsing, saw the new CD, and he walked in while they were setting up. So I met got in line, 2nd I think, and he was just as they say - friendly, curious, kind and cool. He gave me a few minutes of his time, seemed pleased to hear his music made it into my wedding, and drew pictures on my new Apple Venus CD cover. A good day for a fan guitarist.
Andy Partridge is my fucking hero! This guy is an inspiration and obviously extremely intelligent. I get very nostalgic listening to his playing & talking...
Regardless of his eccentricities (or maybe because of them) or the way he looks, it would be hard to find a more friendly and gregarious person in the music biz than Andy Partridge, always ready to share with his fans and make them feel special.
I watch this all the time JUST so I can see later XTC songs played live (though I did at least see the Dukes of Simpleton once in Austin). Every time though I desperately want him to finish singing Playground... No matter--the best part is whenever you see Andy play, it's obvious how much he loves music. It makes me so much happier for the music he's given me.
There aren't many artists out there whose output is of such consistently high quality. XTC are true originals - They're so unique I can't think of any bands out there who could do their songs justice.
as a fan from his Helium Kids days (pre Xtc, 76ish) and guitar teacher, i can easily say to myself or a student; 'Just listen to what Andy (or the rest) is doing...lol..cant go wrong there. and yeah Andy was/is known as a writer but to MANY i know he (and Dave G) belonged to the 'guitar god' roster as well, the solo in/on "No Language..." tastes like vintage T Monk. thanks for upping this!
He did experience crippling performance anxiety, to the point that he couldn't do it without pills. Many talented and creative musicians have the same problem--it doesn't have to do with how good a musician someone is. Some classical performers use beta blockers for auditions/performances.
For example the explanation how he came to Church of Women - SHEER BRILLIANCE You British don't really appreciate your greatest talents. Andy Partridge, John Martyn, 10CC ... just to name three.
@@krollpeter Been part of that club since I and others used to put _Making plans for Nigel_ on repeat play in the student's union bar when it had just been released... Bought all the XTC LPs until I got married - at which time, LP purchases were verboten due to impecuniosity....
3-sentences or less: A magical gem of a share with samplings of greatness from Andy. The tunes you chose 'Stupidly Happy' 'The Church of Women Song' 'Don't You Know' 'Star Seeds + Light' some fave's. 3:22 , 6:02 :) , 7:59 Hee hee , 8:44 , 8:56 , 9:38, 10:13 , 10:30 just a few marvelous; + Just on Time.
@taxus750 I have to disagree. Doris Bagshot who lives in New York originally came from Swindon and she became very good at providing hand relieft to all the bankers who work for Goldman Sachs and is known officially as Swindon's best ever export.
thanks for the instruction, you are one of my favorites of all time.maybe i'll retrieve that guitar i threw out the window ,after listening to you dudes.
@rintintin7529 The lyrics of Andy are way before their time; when did you ever hear THE TRUTH is popular??? POWERFUL!!!!! Love to you XTC. Thanks to the Angel BEing that sent these genius musical wonders my way over a year ago. LOVE TO U too.
Mr partridge just does not get the credit due for being a unique and revolutionary pop master. Turned 3 chord pop music on its ears. i believe he will be revered in music circles in the future, probably not till after he's dead and gone like most great genius artists who are simply ahead of their time.
@flooberbloob I can't think of many bands who have been so creative and inspirational, and downright great musicians, but at the same time under rated. In fact, I can't think of any!
If I had three million euros I'd tell XTC that I'd give it to them to make one final last album with the caveat that I could be the assistant producer. I mean it!
I thought the reaction was to his ex wife chucking his valium away . He was going through cold turkey ... And the new ES material was more complicated , I suppose (to play live, I mean ..although what footage I have seen he coped pretty well ....
Andy's voice sounds sooooooo much better without the new wave shouted/reverb effect he allways has on record. Andy, re-record all your catalog with that simple real voice !
Dude, I own 2 Squiers - a Strat and a Jaguar bass. But I have to say that the Epi's I have played aren't that great. You want a good Les Paul buy Japanese.
Very strange....the over all message of "surprise yourself", "im not sure what this chord is", even the crappy video quality...is so similar to the only video "lesson" Elliott Smith ever did. XTC and Elliott Smith are the only artists I know of who have a string of Albums that are consistently great from start to finish..music and lyrics. Elliotts entire solo catalog is great, no bad songs. IMO, Andy Partridge's work kind of falls off when he quit playing live... Mummer is half good. But so are most albums. Its strange he has stage fright but seems so extroverted in interviews.. Elliott seemed just the opposite but played live in order to keep writing and recording.. and ultimately it didn't work out so well for him personally, I guess. Anyway, its subjective. My take on my 2 favorite songwriters which I find to be completely unique but with similar views on writing.

Richard Albert Henderson you expressed it perfectly, exactly what I’ve been thinking about his music reaching both the brain and the heart.
I do. And I'm an American. Love this band!

From the first to the last album I don't think I've ever heard an artist or band progress so much. Not to mention his singing. Just blows me away.
Regardless of his eccentricities (or maybe because of them) or the way he looks, it would be hard to find a more friendly and gregarious person in the music biz than Andy Partridge, always ready to share with his fans and make them feel special.
Incredibly well said

you mean Dukes of Stratosphear?
@@ewoltrev Dukes of Simpleton are a tribute band
This is the coolest. I've been an admirer of Andy Partridge for 25 years and more and finally stumble upon this. Fantastic.
Love the fact that he's even puzzled as to where his brilliant ideas come from - not knowing certain chord names, and not too worried about it.
2:51 he gets to "Stupidly Happy". Love it.

I love how he articulates everything, so clear and precise.
the "keef riff" sounds like keef (hasn't written one that good since the 70s) AND Andy....pure class
I like how he just keeps the distortion on. So eccentric. Love it.
We want another lesson with Andy Partridge, please!!!
This guy is a fuckin' genius.
Love playground. The opening riff is definitely one of my favorites.

Andy’s guitar parts on Black Sea are incredible also
So great to see Andy play these amazing tunes stripped down to their basics.
WOW! I didn't know these existed. Thanks a lot! XTC is sorely missed.
Such a natural talent. Great pop-rock sensibilities.
I can't believe the guy is this handy on the guitar.I never knew :( NOW I do :)
Now that's what you call a musician, fabulous talent,ultra-nice guy too.
Thank you so much for posting this! Pure genius.

"Fake Keithery" as if I couldn't love the lad more.
I wish he'd live forever, and make more, glorious tunes.
A true genius.
Long live Andy Partridge!
Swindon's best ever export :)
Well. After trains....
The guy is brilliant!
It's a rather old video dating back to 2000 but it does appear to be.
Saw this over a year ago and this time I'm getting a wonderful, but completely different enjoyment from it.
Genius basically.
wow if this guy is a genius Frank Zappa must be god and if Zappa is god Mozart must be ummmm well i guess he would be Mozart
Black Sea and English Settlement are fantastic records, but listening to Oranges And Lemons through a good set of headphones is MESMERIZING!
that keith riff andy found is like a keith riff heard backwards :)

@blasty109 talking in front of a camera is something we all do every day as big brother is watching all of us!
So CooL! THANKS!
Genius
andy probably can't sing a bad note. If he does, his guitar playing will make it sound like it's supposed be in there. Really an amazing artist.
10:34 : Johnny Cash used to thread a piece of paper through his acoustic guitar strings for that chicka-chicka sound.
so good

I seriously thought that Colin sang most of the songs on Apple Venus and Wasp Star, that’s how much different Andy sounded to me

the interviewer may think Andy is not really known for guitar playing (as much as songwriting), but I can assure him that he's wrong.
