I'm proud of you, Dan! Earlier in the year I gave around two hundred titles of mostly Blu Rays & some standard def DVDs to my fellow horror loving eldest nephew Hunter. Though I kept 81 titles in all, I also feel MUCH less cluttered. You made a wise choice my friend 👍 ✌️
First of all Dan, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, I think many of us are in the same boat, even if we don't want to admit it most of the time. I've recently had a similar situation, moving house and having move a collection and as a result had a revaluate what I had and what I really needed etc. There's of course the fact that we see soooo many other videos showing these great editions from all over the world and somehow it makes you feel like you NEED them, when in fact we don't. I sold off many of my expensive oop boxsets because they were going for crazy money, (I'd rather have the cash to spend on the family than have something gathering dust that I either may not watch again, or have other copies of..) I made a rule that If there's a standard edition I'll get that... I'm very much over paying twice the price for some post cards and a poster that I'll never look at again... For me, it's about the film, watching it enjoying it (or not) and no longer about packaging porn or how full my shelves look compared to someone else. Great to see you mate, hope the family are well. Take care. 👏👏📽📽
Hi Dan, Good to see you back in the saddle my friend, every movie fan & collector will eventually reach to this point several times over the years after building their collection & purchasing habits will change, myself i"ve slowed down in purchasing so many as before i was putting out monthly updates & now every two-three months & cutting down the collectors editions & not double dipping also. Great points you mentioned here, from one of the OG"s in the community 😎👍
Great to see you back Dan. You’ve been missed. Always enjoy your content. This was another excellent video and I’m glad you’re feeling happier about your collection now as well. Lots of great points here mate. Top video.👍
Hey Dan. You look well mate, all refreshed. It's definitely hard to balance the influence of seeing people's collections and and special editions and the desire to buy everything when we may not actually watch them. When I put in a order for say 10-15 different titles, I get a buzz and can't wait for them to arrive. As they tend to trickle in from the various vendors it takes a bit of the buzz away. Then you realise you can't watch everything at once. Especially cause you're still trying to watch the previous lot, do UA-cam videos and live with loved ones. Since starting my new job, reducing my UA-cam output and generally being stress free these days. I've started to find it easier to pick a film, like you did. Even films I have to dig for is less stressful now so I'm not put off. I still do the odd blind buy but I've been mostly collecting 4K's of films I really want. Do what you want, not what the world around you wants you to do. Take it easy buddy. Trev
I think whatever collecting style makes you happy is the one that's best for you (as long as you have the funds, space and time to manage it). For most of us I think that means a collection that is 99% made up of movies that we've seen at least once, like enough that we know we want to have available at our fingertips (to be able to throw on again in the future should the mood take us) and is easily accessible/stored in a manner we can easily find and enjoy perusing as part of our collection. Movies that you don't like should ideally not be bought in the first place (blind buys are always risky no matter how much you think you'll like it or whoever has recommended it) or kept apart from your main collection on a "purgatory shelf" ;-) where you plan to give them one more viewing (or partial viewing) at some point in the future before sending them on their way (or, if you find you like them more than you remember, bringing them back into your main collection). Good video ! 👍
Sounds like you got to where I was years ago mate. Collected way to much stuff and spent loads of money. I ended up shrinking my collection to the basics as in my favourites I always go back to. That's why I watch all your channels to see what I might buy instead of going silly and buying everything. Being honest with yourself is the best policy 💯💪
I'm going to be doing the same at some point. I've done a small clear out of films I won't watch again, like the resident evil films, and just keeping the first film and possibly the second as they're the ones I enjoy. The rest I won't watch again. And normally I won't blind buy, but I've done it recently and I wish I hadn't. I know I need to do it for my mental health and also to slow down on the buying. But I totally agree with everything you've said. And I'm glad to see you back in some capacity, mate.
Hi Dan great video, I finally came to this point this year too, had too many blu rays/dvds finally got it down to like 100 now, and hoping to trim even more, feel so much better, only own stuff love and will rewatch, doesn’t matter what other people have in their collections
No way I remember this channel from I think 2013ish, I've thought about it over the years whenever I think of movie collecting and I saw this recommendation. If I remember correctly, there was a video where you were getting rid of your video game collection because of space. Great to see you're still around on UA-cam, even if this site isn't what it once was.
Hi Dan I was the same pal last year far too much in the collection never going to rewatch I kept all the faves and flogged the rest I don’t feel as anxious now about having to rewatch everything due to the money I spent you’ve done the right thing buddy
Ive also trimmed my collection. Put up some new shelves and now only diplay collector,4k and boutiques. Everything else went into storage waiting for their time to shine. Most of them are charity shop bound watch and burn crap anyhow. I will also be more selective as to which titles i will purchase from now
It's strange that the mental health thing doesn't happen with digital. I collect on I-Tunes, have far too many films on there but it doesn't affect me. It used to do with physical, because you're sorrounded with too much stuff, that you can't possibly watch.
I have seen a lot of UA-camrs talking about this. Getting rid of some off the collection. Won't watch The Movies again not enough space. When you've been collecting for a few years everyone's gonna come up with this problem just like me. I have got enough room for another shelf unit. But if I put one in it means one day I'm still gonna come up with this problem not enough room
Good to have you back mate I’m the same I have a mix of physical digital collection so I don’t get rid of movies but I don’t buy movies anymore minus some new releases because I have enough for years and I’m poor and it makes no sense to me stockpiling movies when I have such a watch list maybe the odd dvd from the euro section of cex as an exception
Having a smaller collection definitely make you feel better as u know it’s movies u will rewatch again & again , for me many new releases for example the new Beetlejuice film aren’t worth my time owning physically but I will rent online
Awesome to see you back Dan 😀🍿🎸🎶 I’m now trying to not spend as much as I be watching mostly Horror in October and the movies I was plan on getting that are Non Horror films I don’t feel I will pick up for a while or so 😊👍 I really got into rebuilding my VHS collection past few months and some titles that I can get for a decent price on VHS I feel I should get them films on VHS possibly first before I think about getting it on Blu-Ray/4K that are more up in price. I’m hoping to get my VHS combo TV soon 😀🍿📼 📺 Great to see you making a return Dan and look forward to your future content 😀🍿🎸🎶
Hi Dan i started clearing my collection around 2 months ago,and just buying the best version of my favs got a bit of money back off ebay and quicker to pick a movie to watch now
I'm kinda doing that now, I've cut back on buying, I still have many videos to share in the future, even if I never buy another movie or not! I have a huge pile of videos I haven't watched yet, I found it sad honestly, I love movies, but I may clear out some space, as a collector you have to do that and take a break from UA-cam, that's my plan. Take care my friend! Good to see you back and charged up!
Glad you're doing well mate, nice to see you back. I've always just bought what I liked or will rewatch. Never gave a monkeys about special editions or any of that nonsense. I can never understand why people have films in their collection they don't like, or just get another film in a franchise to complete it. Would love to know some of the titles you got rid of? Take care mate 👍
Cheers mate. Some big hitters that went Original star wars trilogy All the fast and furious except for the 1st Lord of the rings trilogy The hobbit trilogy Tge harry Potter series
Good to see you again Dan, hope things with you, your wife, and daughter are going well. As to your trimming down of the collection, you do what you feel you gotta do buddy. I've only felt overwhelmed a couple of times in my life in regard to too many DVDs, Blu Rays, and now 4Ks (yes, I took the plunge and upgraded, and don't regret it), but I was lucky at the time to have a bunch a movies I knew I would never watch again and had no issue either letting neighbor friends have them or outright sell them. When I moved from Philadelphia PA to New Jersey back in 2018, the 2nd trim down of the collection had to happen again, and that one proved to be a little harder cause there were some I knew needed to go, but was hesitant; one of the hurdles to Asperger's Syndrome and Autism in general is the fear of changing anything. I persevered though, and in the end felt good to give the discs new homes. I still find the odd item to sell now and then, but as of now, I'm pretty happy with what I have in my collection. I can also understand not watching other collectors as you can kind of fall into the "oh, I gotta have it" when they show off what they've purchased, and generally I don't fall into that trap anymore myself cause I've learned what my tastes in film are, so I don't go through FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) too much these days, only on the occasional Special Edition I know I want :) Blind Buying is a gamble I will admit, and if you're not comfortable doing that anymore, that's perfectly fine, nothing wrong with knowing your limits. For myself at least, such gambles have mainly paid off, only on rare occasions do I end up with duds, but I do understand why some fans are deciding not to anymore. You'll find your balance soon my friend, it just takes time and a nice amount of will power. Take care buddy, and speak to you soon.

Hi mate, that would have been myself on my previous channel.
@@dansmoviecave That'd explain it. 11 years is a ridiculous length of time. Robin Williams and Paul Walker were still here for example.

A great video, Dan. It sounds like curating your collection has been really beneficial.
Do you still collect Xbox games?
@ccipher5990 Hi mate, I sold all my high value games for the 360 back in early August, I just have a few left that I'll take in to cex ( lower value games) Xbox one and the collection I'll be selling on soon. I've ultimately fell out of love with gaming.
@dansmoviecave Yeah I think there's a lot of people feeling the same about gaming now. Hopefully you've built up some nice CeX credit. 🙂
