Great analysis! This has to be my favorite coming of age flick from the last decade. While it shares a lot of similarities with other movies in the genre, the characters, the humor and inventive camerawork (for a teenage comedy) make it stand out miles ahead of the competition in my eyes.
Ok after watching this, I can say this is my favourite essay of yours. I think you have nailed really good writing in this one, and your delivery is well-paced and well-timed. You've managed to expand on one shot like crazy (the only thing I felt was when you slowed the frame rate and it was jittery, it felt a bit weird?) but I loved this essay, it teaches me the importance of the demonstrability of ideas in a video essay.
Idk how you felt about The Edge of Seventeen, but I did not like it. Booksmart is amazing and I really didn't think I'd like it much, so it surprised me a lot. I went and watched The Edge of Seventeen not long after since I'd seen it's letterboxd rating, but was extremely disappointed. I don't get why people think it's special, and honestly I don't even get why people think it's good. It was such a basic coming of age story which bought nothing new to the table and had so many flaws imo, the ending specifically was so dumb I felt like I had watched the wrong movie
That's okay. The beauty of life is that we all see things differently. Having differences in opinion is what makes life fun so that we can have discussions. The reason why I feel The Edge of Seventeen is a masterpiece because I was in the same place as the character in the movie. I'd even argue that the film actually breaks the cliches like the perfect jock or falling in love with a creep tropes. By breaking them it unveils that we are all imperfect in many ways. One reason why I've seen people hate the film is because of the erratic behavior of the lead. But just because she's the lead doesn't mean she has to be perfect and good all the time. The film is her journey in learning that everyone around her has problems in life and her problems aren't bigger than anyone else's. And she comes out of that journey more open and understanding. The actress' performance is also quite dynamic and makes me love it even more. Just my own opinions!
@@Arttective it's interesting that you think it broke the typical cliches, cause I felt like multiple had played out. The protagonist going after the guy who is obviously sleazy and not meant for her even though there's a much better guy clearly meant for her, just about everything with the mother (specifically the ending where she has a sudden change of heart), the entirety of the ending where the protagonist suddenly becomes sociable and all of her flaws are thrown out the window was the biggest offense in my eyes. I am always 100% on board with an unlikeable protagonist, I believe that Noah Baumbach's "Margot at the Wedding" is the most underrated film of all time, and it upsets me seeing so many people dislike it because they couldn't connect with the main character. However, in The Edge of Seventeen it doesn't bring anything knew to the table and our lead is essentially absolved of all the flaws we had seen prior and it happens so fast too. I'm glad you were able to enjoy it but to me it's just another typical coming of age unfortunately
She went after that guy because it felt adventurous to her. She had a genuine crush on him but it's only after her intersection with him does she realize that sex is more than just sex, it's also an emotional connection. She felt betrayed cause she was there to form a meaningful relationship but he wasn't interested in that. That taught her that good looks don't mean a meaningful relationship. Also I don't think she becomes social able outright, it's her new bf who introduces her to his friends and we don't really see what happens next. What's more important is that she is trying to take those steps to come out of her shell. Finally, her brothers subplot is what basically ties her and her mother together. Both were acting dominating and selfish until gives them a reality check that his life is being affected by it. For both the ladies, he broke the facade that he was this all encompassing perfect human being. The mother becoming more understanding is literally what my own mom has done everytime we've had a fight lmao so that moment actually puts a big smile on my face. And yes, I agree that it may seem like her problems disappear outright but I feel she has been learning this lessons the entire film so for me at least it doesn't feel like a flick of a switch. Tldr: many of the moments in this film is something that has happened to me reality that's why I find easy to relate to the characters. The ending "change" is a little abrupt but you have to end the film somewhere you know?
Wow, I am in LOVE with your editing! it is so sharp and well-timed, I am super impressed (and jealous? :D). I had never heard of this movie but now I NEED to watch it! I was getting some secondhand anxiety from watching that scene play out, ahhh. Great great job with this one! :)
Dude everyone hates me for this but I really don't like Booksmart. It's just a Ghost World knockoff which misses the point of the nihilism, makes it all jolly, and then masquerades around the place for no discernible reason other than good characters and plot construction. Idk man lol.

Booksmart was one of my favorite movies of 2019, I loved this analysis! Booksmart was such an incredible directorial debut from Olivia Wilde
Thank you! This masterpiece deserved a video essay. Olivia Wilde is like such a genius.
@Just4fun 888 Wow that's a huge compliment, I don't know what to say!
@Just4fun 888 Could you guide me how I can do that? And thanks again!
That's how a skilled director elevates a standard scene. Thank you for the analysis
Yep!

Thank you so much. And I agree. It has all the old cliches with some new twists. And the film making is absolutely stunning.
An underrated channel-can’t wait to see your channel grow exponentially
Wow thank you!!
Haven't seen the film, now I am going to, you've sold it to me 😄
What?? Why did you spoil the movie for yourself :(

Thank you so much man!
Great analysis. Thanks for shedding light into this masterful scene. This is genuinely one of the best coming of age films I've seen.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! Thank you for making it!

Why does this video have only less than 200 views!!!
Makes me wanna get some pancakes
Thank you! Please share this video if you like with your friends. Preferably over a couple of pancakes ;)

It's okay to have a different opinion!!
I really didn't like it either 😅 it was just unfunny to me. I mean the stop motion animated scene was entertaining, but for me, that was it..
