    fun facts: the budget was so limited that every single scene was shot on one take.
    Sly was offered $600,000 to have a bigger name celebrity to play Rocky. During the running montage in the italian market, the orange thrown at Rocky was unscripted; one of the vendors decided to be a little fresh. During Carl Weathers’ audition, he had no idea the guy he was sparring with was Stallone, the writer, so he didn’t pull any punches; so the creative team started looking at him funny like he was committing the world’s biggest faux pas; conscientious of their reactions, Weathers finally spoke up and said “I can do better, I promise. I know I can make it look better if you brought me a better actor.” Sly and the others broke out laughing and Sly said, “Him. I want THIS GUY to be my Apollo Creed.”

    This movie holds a special place for me.
    My sister found a stray kitten at her job and brought it back home. Mew( the cat)was hiding for weeks. Wouldn't come out.
    I was watching Rocky and eating chicken. She finally came out. I gave her a piece of chicken and she sat with me for the whole movie eating chicken off my place.
    4 years later, she's still glued to me and eating off my plate.

    The highest grossing film of 1976.
    Winner of 3 Academy Awards (Best Editing, Best Director and Best Picture).
    Stallone was nominated twice, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor in a leading role.
    The budget was $1 million and the salary was not in the millions at all.
    Other than playing the character, he actually wrote the fight between Rocky vs. Apollo and
    was credited as 'Boxing Chorographer'.
    Stallone of Hell's Kitchen, N.Y. was an underdog in the film industry.
    Pre-Rocky; he had roles in theatre and television.
    Worked so hard to write and create a story with characters close to his heart.
    Just like his character, he had so much to prove to the industry.
    Stallone is Italian for Stallion, thus 'The Italian Stallion'.
    More than a sports drama and all about the heart.
    What it really means to go the distance.
    You loved the original.
    Your gonna love the sequels.

    The film was actually directed by John G. Avildsen, who directed the first three Karate Kid films as well as Rocky V. Fun fact: Avildsen won an Oscar for best director for this film then won a Razzie for Rocky V.
    The film was actually released in 1976, but in December. And Aaron is right. It was the second highest grossing film in 1977 behind Star Wars. It was the highest grossing movie in 1976. The film grossed $177 million in North America which is around $600 million today.

    The making of Rocky is itself a Rocky story! Sly Stallone had pitched this movie to the biggest film studios in America and they all said no, until MGM took that leap of faith and gave Sly his shot. And thank god they did because this film went on to win 5 Oscars, INCLUDING BEST PICTURE!
    This movie also had an extreme impact on moviemaking itself because the camera crew for Rocky actually invented the steady camera for the movie. The long side shot for when Rocky is running full sprint on docks for the training sequence was the first use ever of a steady camera.
    Also Fun Fact: Rocky’s payday from the fight of $150,000 is today worth just over $814,000!!!

    Sylvester Stallone was only the third person to be Oscar-nominated for screenwriting and acting for the same movie. First two were (I think) Orson Welles and Charlie Chaplin.
    15:56 This wasn’t his first role, but it had been all TV one-shots and such. This was what got him noticed; you can see on IMDB that he started getting roles in good movies right after this.
    37:37 The bit where the vendor throws him an orange was completely unscripted - he really was a street vendor who just decided to throw an actor an orange in the middle of a shoot.
    39:37 The statue used to be at the top of the Art Museum steps. It got moved to the Spectrum for a while, and now it’s just to the side of the bottom of the steps. And there’s always a line of tourists there to have a picture taken with it, who should be going in to see the darn museum.

    • @quwykxz
      @quwykxz Рік тому +4

      That's why they should have kept that statue at the top of the stairs, close to the entrance doors, to give people more incentive to go inside the museum.
      Like, "Hey, we're already here, right next to the doors; we might as well go inside and enjoy some art."
      I GUARANTEE the museum would have a lot more patrons, if they weren't so stupid about the placing of that statue.

      @coeusdarksoul2855 Рік тому +6

      I always ask this: What's the difference between a work of art and a movie prop made to the same standard as an actual work of art? Many classic works were made for commission - to show off the wealth of the owner and entertain their guests (Art is subjective so there is no wrong answer IMHO). To me there really is not much of a difference - from South Philly and have seen that statue my whole life and feel that it *is* a work of art. It was created for a purpose, it was made of long-lasting material and to a standard, and most importantly it has cultural significance. It's that last part that separates just a one-off prop from a genuine piece of art to me.

    • @gerstelb
      @gerstelb Рік тому +1

      @@coeusdarksoul2855 From what I understand, the Rocky statues (I think there were 3 made) were made more cheaply than “standard” bronze statues: they’re not as solid or as durable. And if the city had truly decided to make a statue of Rocky for the Art Museum steps - these movies have done their bit for Philly’s image - that would be one thing. But instead a movie company decided to make the statue, then it just kinda got left there by default.

    • @coeusdarksoul2855
      @coeusdarksoul2855 Рік тому

      @@gerstelb It wasn't the city that blocked the motions to place it at the top where it was in the movie, it was the board of the museum. It's been a while but I remember reading that Ed Rendell - both as mayor and governor of PA - supported it.

He speaks in simple words in every sentence, his dumb but incredibly funny humor is a prize for his character, and the feelings he has and what he has to say about them drives the entire series. Adrian, first shy, becomes the backbone for Rocky, and always has his back, helping him understand his own pain and suffering. Paulie is the best character though, after watching all the Rocky movies, you realize he has the greatest, and most devastating arc. Paulie suffers every step of the way, a true description of the working class, and the pain he feels from being over shadowed by everyone in his life.
    The Rocky movies are not boxing movies, and while every movie has much emotion, Rocky is superior in this concept, the Rocky series is about emotions and feelings. This is why Rocky is the greatest movie franchise of all time, ive rewatched the series dozens of times just to see Paulie.
    PLEASE WATCH ALL THE ROCKY MOVIES I BEG THEY ARE UDDERLY AMAZING. PEAK CINEMA.

      Omg I would run Paulie over with a car if I could. I hate him. He’s like, my most hated character ever. He’s insufferable and I was so angry when he wasn’t even dead in the last movie (not the actor obviously, I’m sure he’s fine)
      Edit: just to clarify, I’m not criticizing you for liking him, I was just so dumbfounded cause I watched all rocky movies recently with a friend for the first time and absolutely loved them - but I honestly hated Paulie so much.

    Henry Winkler had a big role in getting the rights back to this movie so that Sylvester Stallone could star in it. Stallone wrote it and sold the rights to a company, but they didnt want Stallone to play Rocky. Winkler went back to the studio and was able to get the rights back to Stallone so he could star in it!

    In my head canon...a few years before this movie takes place Rocky was walking home from the gym one night and comes across Gazzo, who was collecting what he owed from a guy, only Gazzo underestimated him and the guy had friends with him and it was kind of an ambush on Gazzo. Rocky comes in and defends Gazzo enough to get them both out of there. Since then Gazzo looks out for Rocky.

I had the same thing suffice to say turtles didn’t live long. I was in the crowd for rocky 5 and I can guarantee they filled the stands. We didn’t move. Lots of locals came out to fill the stands.

    Aaron just seems so confused by the story and scenes that to me are very easy to see the direction the characters are going. Wasn’t hard to see who Rocky’s character is or how and why Adrian’s character is the way she is. Not hard to follow at all. I think maybe Aaron just pays attention at times to things that aren’t important and misses the things that are. When Rick and Eric were explaining scenes and motivations to Aaron it seemed like he understood better. And sometimes I feel like people try to think to much in the moment about a scene and try to get ahead of the movie in there head by guessing where the story is going. I say just watch the movie and then reflect on these things after.

    The fight takes place on January 1, 1976. Although July 4th was technically the bicentennial, the whole year was celebrated as such. There were commemorative coins and memorabilia that was produced and sold throughout that year. This was incorporated into the movie as a boxing promotion used by Creed that he references a few times in the movie. It's also why he came out dressed as George Washington.

    Fact: Stallone wrote the script and film studios loved, it, but would not hire him to act in it. He was offered $200k for the script alone and he turned it down. He was broke at the time too. So poor he had to sell his beloved dog for $20 because he couldn't afford to buy the dog any food. He ended up finally getting a studio to agree to hire him as an actor, and to buy the script. All for $20k.
    Fact: The producers hired a famous boxing fight choreographer at the time. He had worked on Oscar winning films yet the boxing sequences looked more like slap fights than actual boxing. Stallone wanted the fights to look like real boxing which, before Rocky, had never been done before. The Choreographer refused to stage the fights how Stallone wanted to stage them, and ended up quitting over their differences. Stallone took over the role of fight choreographer and worked with Carl Weathers to put to film what is seen here.
    Fact Stallone went back to the guy he sold his dog to and ended up having to pay the guy $1500 for him to return Stallone's dog.
    Fact: Stallone would find influence in his own life while writing Rocky and each of its sequels. Yes, he has written all 6 Rocky films, and 2 of the 3 Creed films. In fact Stallone has 42 writing credits to his name include the Rocky AND Rambo franchises as well as Cliffhanger, and many others.
    Fact: Despite having created Rocky and all the characters within, Stallone does not own the rights to the character Rocky. It is an ongoing point of contention between himself and the man (a producer) who does own/control those rights.

    Please react to the other movies as you have to the fast and furious ones. For me this is one of the best franchises of all time, I think every movie, including the Creed ones, has something amazing even if you're not a boxing fan (and if I include the fifth movie, especially if you compare the coach relationship with pupil with the relationship with Adonis). And I think Rick put it perfectly, all these movies are about the evolution of a person from being someone who doesn't think they have a future, but a lot of passion, to getting their dream by self improvement and even finding the love of their life and family that they never expected that in the end is more important that the fame and glory. And the best thing is that we see it twice, in Rocky and in Adonis, and both are so distinctive that they feel incredibly special on their own.
