  • The Heathrow PODs (formally the ULTra) is an autonomous personal rapid transit (PRT) system installed at Heathrow's Terminal 5 to connect the main terminal to the business car parks A and B. This kind of personal rapid transit is unique to the UK, and certainly very fun to travel on.
    It opened in 2011 after many delays, and has an impressive 99% reliability and the average wait time is just 10 seconds.
    Join me in this video where we travel from Heathrow Terminal 5's main building over to Business Parking Station A on what may be one of the coolest transit systems I've ever travelled on.

    I wonder how viable they are. It’s using a dedicated track to function which adds to its construction cost and uses a total of 21 pods. You said the wait time is only 10 seconds which means only a few pods are in use at any given time. This implies low ridership and perhaps high ticket prices. I don’t know the cost for tickets, but even if they’re subsidised, it seems like a loss making venture at its worst and a long break even point at best.

      Yes, they are sort of subsidised by the airport parking scheme (costs money to pay in the business car parks) - a lot of money! A mass people mover like at Gatwick or the planned one at Luton would definitely have been cost effective, but I think Heathrow were trying to look for something unique with a “cool” factor. Heathrow are ridiculously rich so even if airport car parking usage drops then they should still be able to pay for the system.

    Went on one of these last April, and they are great! Also probably the first person to do a trip between Parking A and B!

      I agree. We need more systems like the Heathrow POD! I think I beat you to the Parking A to Parking B a few years ago but it may only exclusively be used by spotters!

    When do you think this will be put into cities? I think this would be a good thing to have in large cities.

      I believe the UAE has an example in a city already. It would be very nice to see rolled out in large cities, but their use cases are very limited.

    Is it legal to ride these?

    • @ItsAllAboutTheJourney
      @ItsAllAboutTheJourney  Рік тому

      Yes, it is legal. It’s only really supposed to be used by passengers using the airport but nothing’s stopping you from going up and having a ride on one of these.
