  • Heathrow airport Terminal 5 uses futuristic and unique PRT pods to shuttle passengers from a business car park to the terminal. This video shows the sometimes complex movement of these pod cars all running autonomously.

I can think of at least 2 reasons.
      1) These would be a lot more convenient than most public transit systems. If the system is set up properly, your ride is waiting for you instead of you standing around waiting for
      your ride.
      2) Less confusion for the passenger because the pod could take you directly to your destination, much like a taxi, instead of having to change trains, buses or trams mid trip.
There are more reasons, but these are the first 2 to pop into my head.

    • @rutherford5247

Keith Craig taking you directly to your destination would mean track everywhere. Dedicated bus lanes could do much of what these could do with a small fraction of the cost

It’s free to ride for everyone on Saturday and Sunday as well as the entire months of June and July. It goes around the entire town and my dad and ride it for fun. It’s similar to the one in the video but is a little older. It went under renovation about two years ago. Please do a video on it.

Спасибо. Правда, там, где много снега и льда, это не сработает. Я действительно хотел бы, чтобы они расширили систему до близлежащих отелей и других автостоянок. Было бы лучше демонстрировать технологию PRT, если бы было 5-10 станций.
Thank you. It is true this would not work well where there is a lot of snow and ice. I really wish they would have expanded the system to nearby hotels and other car parks. It would demonstrate the PRT technology better if there were 5-10 stations.

Many airports operate driverless shuttle trains. The London Heathrow PRT is unique because of how small the cars are, because they are battery operated, and because they steer themselves using lasers. All other systems use guide rails to keep the vehicles on a track while this PRT system actually uses a computer to steer itself like a car.

What do you do in a car on the freeway? You get out and try not to get runned over. Difference is, with a PRT, the command centre immediately knows when something has gone wrong and can dispatch people to help you. Some PRT systems are designed for another car to push or pull the malfunctioning car to the nearest station.

I wish more cities would be willing to make the investments in these “alternative” technologies, not just pod cars, maglev, monorail etc etc. When properly built and scaled up these things could carry as many people as the Lex Ave Lines of the NYC Subway could carry.

I think the Hyperloop pods will be very similar, except that they will travel much much faster, I think 100mph or more. The renderings look similar to these pods but bigger like you said. In the CG videos, they are also very close to each other. It looks like they are going 100mph with only inches of space between vehicles.

Someday an ultra pods will become flying.
Once, back in 1985, the children's fantasy film “Guest from the Future” appeared in the USSR. It won a hearts of many Russian-speaking boys and girls and had a cultural impact on a whole generation. The first episode of this film tells how the simple Moscow schoolboy found a time machine and moved 100 years into the future. There he found almost similar pods, only are flying. In one of them he flew to a space-port ...

The PRT pods at Heathrow Airport are battery electric. Not hybrid. They are fun to watch and ride. I only wish the system would be expanded to many more stations! I'd love to see a system with 20 stations and high ridership to really test the usefulness of PRT as a concept. I have faith PRT can deliver!

    • @6yjjk
      @6yjjk 4 роки тому

@@Luke_Starkenburg Where I think they've missed a trick here is in articulating three or four of these PRT cars, possibly a taller version that would allow standing, and being able to run "buses" and 2-car "minibuses" using the same guideway and charging infrastructure (although the nose-in station parking would need an additional "bus platform"). All the hotels along the north side of Heathrow could be served by these in addition to regular PRT cars. Airside, you can tie all the terminals and gates together with PRT buses, with private cars available from the business class lounge direct to the gate (possibly just scan the boarding pass and be taken to the right gate). So many possibilities.

Would have been nice to see some people getting in or out of one of these things, just so we could see how the doors work. No look at the interior seating either?

I can't put everything in one video, but maybe I should have included some of this. I have another video which shows all this. ua-cam.com/video/8lKtn3jfJpE/v-deo.html
Start at 2:19 and watch from there to see people getting in and out, and also interior clips.

    昔ゆりかもめなんかの前身になった、研究中の交通システムを思い出した。
    結局、大量輸送に適さないと言う理由から、一台毎のオンデマンド配車を諦めて、自動運転のみ実用化したらしいけど。
