Where an ad comes in right at a BIG event in the game, screwing over anyone who isn't subbed or Turbo or anything, and then just has the attitude of, "Blame Twitch. It's not my fault." Like, no. There are such out-of-place ads on YT, Twitch, etc. because they aren't doing any targeting. Either an advertisement for turbo or an animated background with the text “commercial break in progress” (then an advertisement banner for turbo under it). Hey, I don't know how many of you are aware of this, but Twitch (probably) doesn't choose the ad for the streamer. Most ads on the internet are being auctioned in real time. Twitch sends the information about the type of viewer to some auction server. Then different companies respond with a cpm they are willing to pay, based on individual algorithms. Highest cpm wins. The whole thing takes less than 400ms.
When you see an ad for some product you have visited before, Twitch (or whatever website is selling ad space) has no clue. The advertiser does. They know you, so they bid very high cpm and win the auction.

    • @chernobyl169
      @chernobyl169 Місяць тому +14

This does explain the lack of targeting. If ad service is by algorithm there is no capacity for consideration of target audience. Ironically, one of the most fundamental laws of marketing that I learned about 25 years ago is that the single greatest thing you can do to multiply the return on marketing expense is to market to your target audience. All this clamor for CPM and view rates and nobody is considering the impact of wasted marketing.
For example, I live in a three story apartment complex. Last week, I received in my mailbox a flyer for a roofing company. So did all 100+ residents of this apartment complex, all renters. The amount of revenue that ad spend will generate is virtually guaranteed to be zero, yet they spent it because they didn't think about their target audience; they simply saw "100+ addresses" and pulled out the credit card. Wasted marketing.

The main point I think is because you pause during ads. Most people do not. They view it as a subscriber perk. If you want to watch me play the game without ads, you should subscribe which I can understand considering it is the streamer's job and you want to support them. But the fact that twitch turbo supports the streamer. I was not aware of that. It's kind of like UA-cam, Red or premium as it's called now. @@wisnoskij It doesn’t quite work like that tho. The ads run every, idk, 30 minutes? And you can pause ads, but it’s a manual process, so if you’re focused you can miss it. Also pushing it back and pushing it back, you lose ad revenue in the end. And when he says he pauses for ads, he doesn’t just leave the people with no ads hanging, he pauses his main content and just chats while the ads are playing, which builds ties with the community who didn’t get ads, and more importantly the community members who have dropped money on his channel purchasing subs or turbo or connected via amazon prime. The $$ spenders who are more likely to gift subs.
It’s like a tv show with a live audience, say the Daily Show, and those “behind the scenes” videos they put out where the host chats with the audience during breaks.

@@wisnoskij Sorry but I think this is just a non-point - really feels like your criticising just for the sake of it. I only say this because I don't see how your point makes any sense.
Both viewers and streamers are very vocal about their hatred for ads - because it ruins the continuity of the stream. So, having an option that allows viewers to opt out of ads, while still being profitable to the streamer, AND making twitch more money, it's a win-win-win scenario. Your point, is that turbo doesn't benefit the streamer because they can run their ads at intentional times... which is confusing because if that was the case, then streamers wouldn't complain about having to run ads. It's almost like you can't time 3 minutes of ads per hour in a way that doesn't interrupt the stream.
And while it's true that streamers do time their ads for when they are leaving the room for example, not only is this for a small fraction of total ads run, but anyone who intends to watch the stream further is probably not engaging with the ads directly, in the same way they also won't engage with the empty chair. When an ad is run, viewers aren't all of a sudden bound to their chair or the stream tab.
In summary, I don't mean for this to come off in a confrontational way, but I just think there's not really a point to be had here. This is a win for every party involved, and if you made this argument not knowing too much about twitch in the first place (which I would assume is the case since you thought all ads were able to be timed in a non-invasive way), I would encourage you to make points that are actually based on your knowledge, not just assumptions.

“Twitch’s Pre-Roll runs 8 ads for someone when they start watching your stream.”
In my own experience - as an American living in the US and watching streamers also streaming from the US and at all times of the day - I have never seen more than 3 Pre-Roll ads when joining a channel to which I’m not subscribed, and the collection of ads have never lasted more than 30secs
In fact they’re usually 15-20secs total for up to 3 ads (10secs each), but usually only 1 or 2 ads at 10-15secs each
No idea where you got the 8 ads figure from, I’ve never experienced that many
IMO I’d rather 1) as a viewer wait for the ads to finish than just click away, and 2) as a streamer below 100CCV attract the viewers with enough patience and curiosity to wait and see what I have to offer before discarding me out of hand, because those viewers are more thoughtful and far more likely to come back next stream than the ones who’d rather click away
The other reason I only use Pre-Rolls is logistical: the format of my content (long-format challenge runs over 3 hours in length) is largely incompatible with ad breaks even as far apart as 1 hour … the ad breaks are almost never at a convenient time during a run, even using the Snooze feature as many times as is allowed (3x up to 10 mins each), and even if I manually double-up an ad break with a warm engagement immediately after a scheduled one, and let’s face it, running 6mins of ads at one time is a really big ask of viewers, even after two hours of no ads
For streamers at 100+CCV it makes sense to limit or eliminate Pre-Rolls by running Mid-Roll ads at 3mins/hour, because at that level you actually get a significant monetary return on your investment in the risk of losing viewers during ads. At sub-100CCV the minuscule return isn’t worth the risk in having viewers leave when your content is interrupted, even if you pause your content (which I very often can’t) after a warm engagement intro to the ad break.
When I tested running scheduled Mid-Roll ads every hour or every 2 hours - with a warm engagement and pausing my content - for two straight months, my Followership *plateaued*… until I went back to just Pre-Rolls
There’s no single ads strategy that works for every streamer and every viewer. You have to figure out what works the best for you, your content, and especially for your viewers / community.

For me, also as a US viewer that watches US streamers at all times of the day, if I switch on a channel, be it for a streamer I've watched hundreds of hours of or never seen for a second, and an ad pops up, I'm instantly switching off the channel. I don't care how many ads there are, how much I've watched that streamer before, or anything else. I refuse to watch ads before I've seen any actual content.
And frankly, Turbo is a good idea. The main issue I have with Turbo is that I ALREADY get everything I need out of it for free. There are multiple browser extensions that block ads on twitch and trick the system into thinking you're watching the ad. By all known logic, streamers shouldn't be losing money because Twitch thinks you watched the ad, and viewers don't lose anything because they didn't have to watch the ad. For free. As long as that tech exists, Turbo will never be worth it except as a way to tangentially support your favorite creators.

0:17 i hope Thor talks about the advertising per country per demographic per ad subject pricing. For example Alcahol and gambling companies pay to push in places they can without taxing, and most arent tracked by twitch, because they can apparently get away with bribing platforms to push their ads free of being noticed and in the wrongly tagged category without consequence
Apparently you can make your company account for ads, then you tag the ads with the appropriate categories, the "company" fore the ads is likely not the company for the ads brand, or even the company who made the actually advertisement. They end up being subsidy/commissioned groups who just enter any old sock puppet company account and tag the ads with ANY tag or all of them that arent restricted like "for kids" tags on gambling ads.
They will even incorrectly tag their "gambling"/"get drunk" ad to try and trick the system.
One example is the gambling ads that are disguised as something random completely unrelated to gambling, as in people getting food from a barbecue and the cook slapping one of their hands for picking the wrong burger.. then they advertise their APP for "better odds at betting on things" bla bla bla and the tags are "food" "cooking" "outdoor dining" everything except "gambling"
Gambling companies will even go as far as saying "gambling = Gaming" and then tag it with the different gaming tags available.
Thats just one type of advertising company example, and its different per country, if its even the same ads or tags.
You then get different "run times" for ads per user per country. They're cheeky, they'll try to squeese out every second, a good example is ads on mobile games, being all different, and doing shitty stuff like "tiny close buttons" "backgrounds that match the colour of the button and removing the button contrast outline that prevents that buttons blending in." Then they have the "button doesnt show up for a few seconds" or even the "lets play an interactive ad" right after the ad.
To really poke your butthole, they got with combinations of all of those.
TWITCH and youtube dont do interactive ads because its too difficult to implement for multiple browsers. But they do like to screw with time.
Twitch and UA-cam like to screw with the actual ad timer, or do the "extra seconds" on the start and end of their ads for "loading" which is time they dont log, since each ad is tagged with the written down time for that ad, so say a user has watched an ad for orange juice, its tagged as a 1m ad, but is actually plysically played at 1m15s and they "round it down" to both rip off the content uploader and get more ad revenue for themselves. There are some that are even tagged as 1m30s but are a whole 30s longer.
I got sick of being bored watching ads mid stream, so i started prefixing my chat typing with -ads- when ever i cant hear the streamer, incase they were interrupted mid story/conversation, and in doing so i also figured i should just time the ads too. so i have a stopwatch i can start stop automatically when it detects the ads. and their timer for the ads is never correct.

I would like to see an option where someone with turbo can get emotes from a channel after “X” hours of view time if the streamer decides to allow that. That way the viewer feels the need to watch them longer and everyone wins even further

i think prerolls are "fine" for certain categories, i think ASMR is a good example of a category where pre rolls are a "good" idea. - just need to have them not activate when u come from a raid or something.

I love how you can tag your stream to only include specific ads related to your stream, and they STILL push random crap thats been paid to play with massive bribes. They just ignore the stream ad tags completely, it doesnt matter any way, when they do get caught they just post the ad to one of their other sockpuppet accounts.

Linus also has a fun video on the youtube side where he breaks down how much UA-cam Red or Premium or whatever they call it makes them. The no-ad version of a website is significantly more profitable. Tells you how little ads pay, in total.
This is why journalism is so bad (that's a pretty vanilla, bi-partisan take). Instead of a subscription model, selling individual newspapers or needing website clicks and relying on the ads in the paper/website needs A LOT of clicks to generate real revenue. This is also why the Economist used to be well respected. They were a subscription model, so made money by reputation and the fact people wanted good articles, instead of being into a specific headline and brought in based on that.

Funny that outer wilds is his favorite game, given that (at least on stream/video) he hasn't seen half of it :D

The fact I forgot to use my ad blocker and had to watch 6 seconds of an ad to watch this I feel like I already lost lol

Your adblocker works on Twitch? I have a Ublock Origin and it doesn't block on Twitch.
Edit: oh wait you were talking about this YT video nevermind

I just hit affiliate recently on my channel and hearing this seems like it’ll be good to try to help grow a bit. I already have a audience elsewhere doing other stuff and I wanted to get into streaming for fun, one of my goals has always been a good community, a happy community, so if I can make this part of it better with this ad plan it would help me and hopefully draw more people to my streams!

The preroll ad thing is probably the most important information for new streamers there is. Most new streamers won't even think about it probably. If you don't want to watch a stream on twitch because of ads, you just close the stream and watch another one and don't remember it, because it is such a non-issue for you as a viewer.

ok ok I have been beaten into submission by your freaking brilliance. You're dominating my UA-cam feed now I have to go back to twitch that I have usually had no interest in just to watch you there too.
