Thank you for the video! Great job and well explained. I now have two 2002 xterras, one auto and one manual transmission. All the work you are doing is really helping out in understanding how to better work on these vehicles. I am watching from Houston, Tx. Thank you!
Absolutely awesome video! Good tip on removing the center link to bring the pan straight down. I was planning to tackle this task over the winter and had a general idea of what all was involved, but this helps TREMENDOUSLY. Luckily I am already familiar with removing the front diff, the starter motor, and the steering system. Looks more tedious than difficult. How did you actually separate the pan from the block? Pry with a screw driver? Tap with a wooden block? Thin scraper blade to separate it? I don't want to bend any thin sheet metal or gouge anything. Trying to keep the re-sealed pan oil tight so I can quit dripping oil and not fry another starter motor! Thank you so much for taking the time to document all of this! I make YT videos too on NIssan Xterras and I know it can sometimes slow your progress down when wrenching...but sharing the knowledge is a huge help to the community.
Super informative video. Answered a lot of questions I had like cutting the welds on the cross member. I was scratching my head trying to figure out how that thing comes off. I need to pull the pan to replace gaskets and also take a look at the oil pickup. I've got a bad tick that won't go away.
I have a 1998 Pathfinder with pretty much the same engine, and I don't know if it'll work on yours, but I just stuck a screwdriver in the rotor to keep it from spinning. No dents or scratches
Hey Nathan - amazingly helpful video. Thank you very much. Watching from Northern VA. I'm about a quarter way through this job, like Johnny Five, the bolts for the front drive shaft are murder. Don't have a torch so maybe picking up one today. 2 of the 12 front 12mm bolts sheared off but I'll call that a victory for now. Oil pan bolts are pretty rusty so I am concerned about getting them out but will worry about that later.
I recon it’ll just pull the engine instead of dropping the diff then I’ll also do the front and rear main seals while it’s out. Not everyone has an engine hoist though so I understand why some folks choose to grind the tack welds and drop the diff.
1998 Pathfinder SE 3.3L. 167,000 miles. New to me, as of 3 days ago. The previous owner removed the oil pan to replace the rod and main bearings (old ones seemed fine) and he got the dipstick stuck in the system. It would pull out about 2" but no more. I tried to work it out by twisting and yanking it in different positions, but no good luck. So then I started the motor to try to identify where the knock was coming from, that it's experiencing. When I ran it up to 3,200ish RPMs I heard something different and after shutting it off I discovered the oil dipstick was severed. What the heck, what could do that? I really don't want to drop the pan (and all the other crap) to get it out, but must I? I assume the broken piece fell to the bottom of the pan and maybe I can get it from the drain hole, with a magnet. But if I can't retrieve it that way, is there anything that can suck it up or get damaged by it being in the bottom of the pan? I assume it's steel and will stick to the pan's magnet. If there is one. What do you think?
Great video, million thanks!!! I feel more confident to start the job on my Pathfinder with this engine. Did you manage to replace the main bearings or did you do only the rods?
my 2002 Xterra pan leaks from somewhere , either crack or pin hole , pan gaskets? Starting mine first week in November, I have 1/2 impact w/650ftlbs torque and other tools.
@@FixingWithPassion No was not rust hole, but took 3 days to remove due to rusted bolts. Then when I reinstalled pan I forgot dip stick in hole and had to remove pan again (#%&*?) total time 7 days but done and not leaking now :-)
If I wanna remove the oil pump does it require removing the oil pan or just dropping it 1/4 of the way? Oil Pick up tube is bolted to bottom of Pump correct? FSM EM and LC very vague on parts layout

Pry with a screw driver and it took some time to get a "bite" separating the oil pan. But when I did it just fell of...lol

At the end of the video you said you would put a link to the rod bearing replacement in the description, I don't see it there.

Great job. Someone that is very mechanically inclined, how long to do this job start to finish you think?? 5-6 hours???
Pretty much! Thanks!
