Great code breaking again, Mick 👏 Watching Karn perform this on Whistle Test is something to behold. Along with Jansen's drumming. What an engine room this band had...
You’re very fortunate to have seen them. I was too young when they broke up. A Wal would be nice but dig out anything without frets in his honour He was truly a uniquely creative guy
I watched an interview with John Taylor he was asked about Bernard Edwards . Of course John was a huge fan and inspired to play similarly. He was then asked about Jaco, He responded " I never really got the Jaco style it didn't grab me , I was much more influenced and tried to play like Mick Karn! who was inspired by Jaco. So if I got any Jaco traits it was second hand via Karn..." I also find Mick Karn much more accessible and easier to listen too. Peace and love brother ✌️ ❤️
Hi Carl He’s just so out there, isn’t he? He said in his book that he’d come up with a rhythm on his right hand and then find notes to play on his left later
It’s a funny thing, I can’t play a jazz usually. I’m this setting it’s manageable for me I had her fretted twin at one point but the neck was much chunkier, and the pickups were stock. They’re a great bass for the kind of money you can get them for!
Great Video as always! When I'm done working definitely gonna learn this one today. I'd love to see I second that Emotion and or Sensitive by Mick Karn. Trying to learn those ones by ear are quite difficult cause like this one, his mutes sound like notes sometimes, which makes you second guess yourself constantly trying to get it down lol
That comment about the rhythm first and notes later makes a lot of sense esp. with this one. Interesting how his parts generally evolved from the album versions to live versions, clearly felt the verses needed more work on this one.

Two absolute one-offs!!
Thanks bud
I’d love to see some more mick karn solo stuff
I hope to get to them all, Olly
Jeez - missing my Wal !
Saw Japan live back in the day.
Mick Karn - what a beautiful and creative man he was.
Recommend his book

Thanks David

I saw that, yes!!
I heard Mick was not influenced by Jaco, he only heard him play much later in life.
Haha, this is so bizarre! HOW did he come up with this bass line and what made him decide on what to play. Amazing and weird bass inspiration.
Hi Carl

This was so helpful, thank you!
My pleasure
I have that same model and colour Mexican Jazz.
It’s been pretty much my main bass for a few months…

Love it. Such a great teacher. Please do heads we're dancing by Kate Bush with mick on bass. I have tried and failed on this one.
I’ll give it a go, buddy! Thank you for the kind words

Oh that’s the story with MK all the time
! Lol! If you’re not second guessing yourself, that’s be a bad thing, with this guy! :)
amazing playing as usual ! wish i knew what the guitar part was...
I think it’s simple enough. Let me have a listen

He was the same revisiting Adolescent Sex and Life In Tokyo in the studio and an awful lot of the live stuff!
