From the Vault: Nagant M1895 Revolver

- Brownells Gun Tech™ and resident firearm historian Keith Ford shows us a little chunk of wheelgun awesomeness: the Russian Nagant M1895 revolver. At first glance, it looks like a typical gnarly old revolver of its period (cough! - Webley - cough!), but there are two unique things about the Nagant: the whole cylinder actually moves FORWARD tight against the forcing cone, and the bullet is recessed entirely within the cartridge case, which is shaped to form a tight gas seal against the forcing cone. Due to the Nagant's sealed gas system, it actually is the only revolver that can be fitted with a silencer! Despite its complex action, the M1895 disassembles easily for cleaning. Although it's a double action revolver, spent cases have to be ejected one at a time, as on a Colt Single Action Army, but with an extra twist (literally!). Production of Nagants started in Belgium in 1895. The Russian government bought the rights and tooling in 1898, and production continued at the Tula Arsenal right through 1945. Some Nagant M1895s stayed in service with Russian police as late as 2008 or '09! There is "dirty secret" about its trigger pull, and Keith spills the beans.

My favorite gun. There's just something about the ergonomics of the grip. Fits my hand perfectly. Good piece of history. Fun to shoot.
My buddy got one and I have to agree, hold it one handed and you can punch the center of the target every time
How is it to shoot in double action?
notforsale today heavy and long, single action is decent though
@@notforsaletoday1895 I don't think it's terrible. It's definitely heavy as hell, but I have decent hand strength. I think the people who say the trigger is unmanageable are not used to working with their hands. Probably depends on the spring condition of the gun you get. I'd imagine the Russians who used it were a bit rougher than your average gun reviewer/enthusiasts.
Good Video. I wish I'd bought a few back when they were cheap.I remember passing by racks of these at Gun Shows in the Early 90'S.
Wish I had bought one of these when they were up$100.
My son had two of these, he sold the one from 1902. The double action trigger pull is about 100 pounds. LOL
Thank you for showing a great piece of history
Thanks for watching!
interesting fact about suppression of this revolver. there was a guys named Mitin brothers which developed different devices for firearms. they mostly known for BraMit (shortly from bratya Mitiny/Mitin brothers) suppressor for mosin but also made few things for nagant revolver. first thing they came with to suppress this revolver was two drums system and special ammo for it. the bullets was put in special sort of cup inside the case and both of drums was mechanically synchronised. when you firing it both bullet and special cup travelling through the barrel to the the second drum. right when they gets inside the second drum the cup stops and sealing gasses inside but bullet keep moving forward and fly out of the drum. this system worked out but was kinda uncomfortable to use so they ditched this idea and later just developed usual suppressor for this revolver. but the idea of gas captive ammo didn’t went to nowhere and there was another examples of similar but more simple designs. but that’s a different story.
THANK YOU for this excellent video! I’ve known about the Nagant M1895 for many years, but I’ve never handled or fired one, and your demonstrations really answered several of my long-held questions.
Glad to hear it! Thank you for watchin!
It has the heaviest trigger I've ever experienced.
A nifty handgun and a interesting reloading project.
Truth!
Thank you sir
Oh rub it in, ive been hunting for one of these for 3 months
Just saw one last week at Winchester Gallery in Fort Worth for $300 bucks give or take. Real neat piece, and I actually preferred the DA to SA trigger work on it
Fascinating Keith! Love your presentations.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful history
Been looking for one for a while.
In combloc weapons the heavy double action pull acts as a safety. The Nagants can shoot the 7.62 x 38R, .32 S&W shorts and longs successfully. The only drawback is the bulged cases, but the extraction rod will help on removing them. There's the competition model as well which is an excellent shooter.
.. I bought one of these some 30 years ago when they were around 90 or so bux...
Oh that trigger pull and firing pin
Could you cover the different variations of the Savage 6A "Click Clack or Gill Gun." I found one in a shop a few years ago and love it.
Fancy Engraved Nagant Party Pistol: That sounds rather festive.
LoL, it seems much faster to reload by doing the first method @ 2:06 than the second method at 3:35.😂😂
The loads vary quite a bit in velocity with WWII loads some using about an 85 grain jacketed bullet as I understand it being super sonic. The original load was black powder and if that case was full should have been the equivalent of at least a 32-20. Then again there are some very weak loads that are probably under 700 fps. I think the yugo loads are supposed to be at 750 fps with a 98 grain bullet. Close to what a .32 spl is supposed to do.
Ballistics
Russian 108 grain FMJ 1006 fps
Fiocchi 98 grain FMJ 628 fps
Aguila 32 S&W Long 98 grain LRN 576 fps
These were great when they could be had for 90 bucks. But at 450 dollars the novelty is the only real factor left, that and maybe the fact that the ammo isn't in high demand.
Interesting firearm . Where does one find ammunition for these revolvers ? Are there any reloading dies for the cartridge?
Conservative Sniper Hunter you can still find online at certain retailers, and gunbroker has some surplus
PPU makes ammo if I remember correctly. You can also put a 32 S&W through them.
Chris. Yeah the Partizan line...but half the fun is the original cartridge lol
Palmetto state armory has fiochi and privi.
Rich Bradley dammit man!! Don’t give away the sources. We don’t want the rabble to flock to the stockpiles🤣🤣
Colt open tops?
Any idea where a main spring could be found?
Check eBay, it’s full of parts
@@David-iw2de thank you.
Maybe numerich gun parts?
🙂👍☕
Very sad I can't buy a second one for $99.99
Bought mine for that price.
zedirich7 I’ll give ya 100....that’s a .01 cent profit!!! Good deal huh
There's a guy in another post who has one that needs a mainspring. Maybe you can negotiate a deal? But in the end you'll need a mainspring. I feel for ya. I passed up a Swedish Mauser for $70 back in the day. Kids were small, house & car payment. Kids are grown now and I don't owe the damn bank one red cent. But I wish I had $70 to spend on that day so long ago.
Light Weight huh I’ll have to track him down, I have a box full of assorted springs, I’m sure I could find one tonwork
Mine shoots high with the stock sights.
Colt M1917
Nice looking gun but the ejector system makes it not so good.
One of the worst sidearms ever issued by a military force. I want 3 of them!
Hahaha we get it!
Astra 600
Merwing Hulbert Army
These things are so goofy. I love the look, but I hate that horrendous trigger.
