  • Welcome to the new segment in our newsletter, that we call THE PIANO OF THE WEEK! Join us while we explore what is special, unique, fun, and cool in pianos at Cunningham PIano Company.
This week we are excited to feature the AVANTGRAND model N2. The N2 is an instrument for the future, yet one that holds firmly to its identity as a grand piano.
The N2 is a hybrid piano, which is an exciting new technology invented by Yamaha. Hybrid pianos combine traditional acoustic piano components with exciting new technology. In this amazing instrument Yamaha has combined the exact feel of a full concert grand piano and somehow packed it into the size of a traditional small upright piano! How on earth could they do that?

Lovely sound, nice action. However, the resonance between keystrokes does sound just a trifle artificial compared to an acoustic piano.

Indeed. Like a car review from someone who can't drive. ;)

Your piano of the week explains why a young pianist Elisey Mysin who plays Grand Pianos has the AvantGrand N1 at home because it must be so much like the action and resonance of an acoustic Grand Piano.

Any guess on when the N2X will come out with the new Bosendorfer Imperial voice?

Thanks for the demonstration. I am considering the Yamaha CLP 685. How similar is the action. And is the 685 have more versatility?
Do these 2 pianos sound more realistic? I have always been somewhat turned off by the "artificial" sound of digital pianos.
    Thanks,
    KEN

Wow beautiful sound, but has a little digital tone still.

I wouldn't judge based on this video, the sound is pretty poorly captured here. Go to a local piano store and try it out, it's remarkable in person.

Hi Hugh, how do the Yamaha AvantGrand pianos compare to virtual pianos such as Pianoteq. I saw in an older UA-cam video you pointing out that sample-based electric pianos can’t provide the variety of velocity expression that software virtual pianos can.

Hi Dan - the Yamaha AvantGrand pianos are remarkable in multiple aspects, not just the range of velocity expression, but also in touch, keyboard responsiveness, and even tactile feedback where you can feel the string vibrations through the keys and pedals. Having a software-based virtual piano with a cheaper keyboard that gives poor tactile feedback can be extremely limiting. I'm amazed at how "lifelike" the AvanGrands are in every respect - tone, touch, and of course, technology! The best of all worlds!
