@@VARJAGAMINGENTERTAINMENT and it's funny too.... my mom couldn't really stomach the slimy monsters and the kill scenes from "Deep Rising", but yet, the decapitations in this movie didn't make her sick
Unless I'm mistaken, I thino the darkness might have something to do with a bad transfer. I say this because that's exactly what happened to Godzilla 2014: in the theaters, you could see in the darkness pretty well, but on blu ray, good lord, you're lucky if you can see OUTLINES! I think Good Bad Flicks discussed the issue in more detail on his video. It's a shame, because it seems to take away from what appears to be a really cool movie. Unlike AVP:R, which has a similar darkness problem but no one seems to like the movie anyway.
that sounds about right. I also saw that video as well. the Blu-Ray tho is the closest we'll get, so far, to the theatrical version which from what I've heard was a little brighter. hopefully they can make another release and finally fix that issue. otherwise tho I love this movie
FlyingFocs avp sucked because they tried to rely on the predator wolf to steal the movie. He was definitely the best predator but the plot was very poor. This movie the relic however has a great plot, great creature and perfect co star Tom Sizemore. To me the darkness in this film made it more suspenseful and scary. But that’s just me 🤷♂️
@@bounty367 I am agree with you with the dark ambience. The film uses the formula from the original Alien where the monster is vaguely shown in order to focus on the victims and how they are being hunted down making you wonder who will be the next or how they will die, being defenseless against a predator they cannot see nor understand at all; in fact, the Xenomorph in the first Alien film is supposed to only have about 4 minutes of screen time due this fact. The Relic actually is one of my favorite monster movie from all time, plus I love the design of the Kothoga
I don’t understand why this movie is so underrated. The darkness in this film fits the plot and makes the movie more scary and suspenseful. Barely seeing the creature kinda adds to the fear factor a bit
LOL, I was going to comment that this movie is too dark and someone needs to turn the lights on.... and then came the text at the end and made that kind of redundant. Still, for 1997 thats some mint special effects! Theres another movie im gonna have to add to my must see list :) Keep up the awesome work you two! Your "killing" it with these vids..... pun TOTALLY intended ;)
@N. Shadow holy poop shoot, that is something I never thought I would see, considering I dont really post stuff. Thank you, my new fave person lol. I hope I get to talk to you more, in a strange way, you just made my day! :)
if you do intend to check out The Relic I'd recommend getting the Blu-Ray since out of all the releases so far it's the closest to the version that was shown in theaters. reason I mention this is because that version was not as dark as the later releases.
@@Armageddon-yt3so oooh, thank you for the info, I will indeed go for the bluray, I was gonna just get the dvd but im very thankful for you letting me know about that! :) much appreciated!

I freaking love this movie. I'm watching when I get home from work. They need to bring the kothoga back dude. Reboot or remake with a sequel. Thanks carnage count for another movie request. How did you like it??? Would you root for a sequel or remake?? Thanks Stan Winston for this amazingly brutal creature.
This movie is based on a book that did have a sequel called reliquary. Both books are worth a read, but it would be hard for them to do the sequel based on some of the cinematic choices they made for for the movie. Still an awesome watch.
Maybe someone could bring in Guillermo Del Toro to give the Kothoga new life in the remake or sequel. But yeah I wish this monster had a second chance at the big screen. 😊
The reason why CC that The Relic was filmed dark: the director wants to tap into our fears of being afraid of the dark. Look at Alien, Ridley Scott filmed the intense alien scenes in the dark. Three reasons why The Relic is great: 1. Stan Winson's monstrous effects; 2. Peter Hyams' direction and killer cinematography; & 3. The f-king Kathuga. Any questions?
AWESOME movie monster! Love the weird jaws, how it eats (I mean, eating the brain stem only? That's new!), how it came to be, the sounds it makes, it's very iconic!
what scared me (still does) the most about the kothoga is how brutal your death was going to be, brutalized like a rag doll before that thing grabbed your head to rip it out open, like being mauled by a nasty pitbull-crocodile-roach hybrid the size of a rhino
Saw this when i was 6 and didnt know what it was called, could only remember seeing the kothoga with the guys head in its tusks, and the bit and the end when it gets destroyed... only found out the name of the movie by chance today!
It’s been said by other people quicker and funnier than I am that it’s probably just as well that Kothoga didn’t run into Linda Hunt. After all, if she can successfully turn Ahnold into a quivering bundle of fright, what chance does a brain-junkie monster have? Another fun fact: Kothoga’s death in the book was very different. And I think, much cooler. It’s skull is thick enough to deflect bullets, but the detective gets a lucky shot (with the lucky bullet), and hits it in the eye. The bullet then ricochets inside the skull and turns the brain to mush. Boom, dead. At least, that’s what I remember.
the original script for the movie has the same scenario, but the main difference is that it wasn't D'Agosta who fired the lucky shot, but it was FBI Agent Pendergast who uses a high-powered rifle with a laser-sight to shoot the creature in the eye.
One thing that bugs me about this movie is that they keep referring to the monster as the Kothoga, when that's not what it's called in the book. In the book, the creature was called the Mbwun (which translated means "He who Walks on All Fours"). Not to mention, in the book, the monster's design was much simpler, looking more like a reptilian gorilla.
If there was a movie about a guy that kidnaps girls and takes them in his 5945473 chamber and turns out he's a guy with tentacles with arms that would be amazing

But since I haven't seen this article for myself and don't know if it actually exists or not, i'm only taking that as that, a rumor!!!
My freind the reason theres never light cause that ruins the fear yes the kills are scary but when you can clesrly see it its not scary what makes it also scary is when they do the kill its barely seen untell its reveled in the light. To be honest the cgi in this film are so realistic. No cartoonish or pixelated effect on that creature nor that corpse dead bodies.
True.. They combine minimal cgi with claw stopmotion During that era
So there is mode realism than current cgi
