  • My demo of the DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion humbucker pickup. My favorite humbucker bridge pickup of all time!
    The guitar I used for this demo is a 2008 Carvin DC127. It has a maple neck with mahogany wings, and an ebony fretboard. The strings are D'daddario 9-46, and the pickup height is 2.3mm beneath the string on the low E side, and 1.8mm on the high E side. Measurement taken with string depressed at the 24th fret.
    The amp used is “Archetype: Gojira” by Neural DSP.

    Finally, someone who doesn’t waste half the video playing clean tones through a pickup called Super Distortion.
    🤷‍♂️

    That pickup is the sound of rock, hard rock, metal, and thrash metal. It can do it all. That's why I added a super distortion and a 36th anniversary in my 1998 Gibson R9. I'm loving that combo set. I just wish I could of done this years ago. Thank God I discovered it late last year. Cheers

      I have that same combo in my Les Paul. It is such a definitive hard rock tone that cleans up nicely too. You can't go wrong!

    Very cool man. I'm putting together a strat now with a Warmoth neck with maple everything and stainless jumbo frets and I have two EMGs which I like, but the Dimarzio Super and Super three are my favorite passives. Your time is superb man. I'm more of an 80s gain guy since I am 62 and grew up playing in the 70s and 80s. ❤. Great playing man and great tone. Outstanding brother. ❤
    The SD has to be the best well rounded pickup for rock ever❤
    Best regards man. Oh, I subscribed man. Will be watching more of your videos brother.
    Regards from South Central Indiana. USA..
    Tim . ❤

    Great demo of my favorite bridge pickup of all time. I've been putting it in everything for almost 40 years. It stands the test of time.

      It really is the best, and I've tried a ton of pickups! I also really like the DiMarzio Tone Zone. It's not as well-rounded as the Super Distortion though.

      The Tone Zone is great in bright strat scale bolt-ons, but it's not as distinctive as the Super Distortion. It's probably DiMarzio's second most popular pickup of all time after the Super D. One pickup I also love is the Air Zone. I love the Norton in mid-heavy mahogany set-necks. But you can't go wrong with the Super D. It's a much warmer pickup than a Duncan JB, which is considered its main competitor. The reason the JB never worked for me is that it has way too much treble, it's way too bright, and the low end is muddy. In my personal experience DiMarzios are more balanced. I also find that their wax potting is more resistant to heat than Duncan's wax potting. I've had a lot of Duncans leak potting or chunks fall out. They never became terribly microphonic, but they are not as quite as DiMarzios to begin with. The Super 3, a very high output pickup, is for some reason also of the quietest pickups I've ever owned. Until you crank it up! Keep rocking.@@ChrisHollandGuitar

    Awesome. Right down to the nitty gritty. Great demo. I have the single coil version for my strat but currently in my strat I have the injector which blows my mind so I’m on the fence over swapping it. But damn this makes it tempting.
    Thanks for the video!

    It's my favorite pickup. Put it in a solid body Peavey back in the 90s and WOW. I got famous in my hometown for how beefy my sound was. This pickup is great for every kind of rock and blues. I have it in a few other guitars, including the single coil size in a telecaster. I'm such a huge Dimarzio fan, and I've tried many other brands. The Super 3 is very hot. The AT-1 is another smoking hot pickup.

      I've become a big fan of DiMarzio myself. My Ibanez RG also has two DiMarzio humbuckers - Steve's Special in the bridge, and the Air Norton in the neck. The Air Norton is my favorite humbucker neck pickup.
      I'm curious to hear the single coil version of the SD...

    I have a 1996 Carvin DC127 with a 5 piece maple/mahogany neck, mahogany wings, ebony fretboard, Wilkinson Trem, active/passive electronics, and the same paint job lol.
    I put a Dimarzio Illuminator in the bridge & a PAF Pro in the neck. DImarzio's sound good in Carvins! ⚡😎⚡
    I tried a Super Distortion in it, but went with the Illuminator because it's signal/sound is more "compressed" sounding/feeling.

    • @ChrisHollandGuitar
      @ChrisHollandGuitar  8 місяців тому

      Nice! I was curious to try the Illuminator a few years back. The PAF Pro is great in the neck, very liquidy and articulate.

    Nice! Was actually wondering about super distortion a while ago. Sounds like a solid rock pickup like its reputation says. No personal experience on DiMarzios so this was pretty useful sound bite.

      Yeah, I was curious about this pickup for years. Phil Collen's guitar sound is a good reference for what it sounds like. It works well for classic rock, and even death metal. Anything with gain, really.

    Nice demo. I always wondered what pickups were in that Carvin as it sounds so good in your covers. The playing isnt bad either. 👍

      Thanks! I swapped out the stock Carvin pickups for the DiMarzios in 2019. The Carvin pickups are on the bright side, and sounded pretty good actually. I wanted something with more midrange and bottom end though. The Super Distortion + PAF Pro combo was a good choice, very happy with these pickups.

    Ever compared this to a Duncan Distortion? I'm curious if this one isn't as ice-picky. Can this do tuning down to like drop B in your opinion or would it sound muddy that low?
    I'm torn between this and a Duncan Distortion.

    • @ChrisHollandGuitar
      @ChrisHollandGuitar  6 місяців тому +1

      I’ve never played drop B through the Super Distortion, but I’ve played drop D with my old band and it sounds great. A lot of definition.
      I never tried the Duncan Distortion.

    One pick I recommend is a Dunlop nylon 1.5mm. They are my favorite picks in the world.

      The ones I use are blue. They have an excellent grip and sound great. You can get crisp, complex harmonics without being earstabbingly bright. @@ChrisHollandGuitar
