    Great episode! Brought the book about a year ago , and I have learned so much by it ! I highly recommend it to beginners to seasoned anglers ! Tom is so knowledgeable , I really listen to what he is saying and apply it on the River ! Has made me a better fly fisherman!

    This river is the Au-SAY-bull, not the Au-SAW-bull, which is in Michigan. Tom says it correctly in the video. Regardless, great video. I grew up in Plattsburgh, and miss the Ausable and Saranac very much.

    Fly fished for a long time in NJ growing up after reading books and teaching myself (many hours of failing and doing Terribly on the water).… Came up to placid to snowboard and saw how beautiful the river here was as it ran along the route to whiteface. I hope to come back here someday with warmer water and fish

    This is surely a beautiful area. We fished the main, east and west forks in 2018 (august). Just an FYI, the state stocks the crap out of these rivers in March. It is a HUGE fly fisherman’s mecca. Almost every motel is dedicated to this endeavor. By the time the summer rolls around, it’s almost barren. We caught some small browns on nymphs. Our biggest catch was actually on the Saranac River, 18” brown under a bridge. We did not fish near lake placid. We stayed in Au Sable Forks. Spent 3 weeks exploring the area methodically. We did catch nice Pike in Union falls pond on kayaks using leech patterns. Taylor pond was a bust for lake trout, lake temp was 71. If your going, go early, book long in advance.

    I LOVE the Ausable river. I know it inside and out! Great river for flyfishing. God do I miss it. Thank you so much for this video Sir. I will be back there as soon as things get back to normal. Being Canadian, I don't have much of a choice... :)

      I never understood why so many people from Canada come down here to fish? It's not even a top 10 fishery in New York.

      @@timothyparker4698 that’s not true. I can name most of the top fisheries in NY, but nothing compares to the scenery of the W Br Ausable!

    • @timothyparker4698
      @timothyparker4698 3 роки тому

      @@paulsnyder681 Hahaha unfortunately scenery doesn't help fishing quality. NYSDEC new trout management plan calls it what it is. Stocked river, low priority, planned to get stocked with 28,000 trout next year. I can name 5 better rivers in just the Adirondacks, not even mentioning Catskills or western.

      I was there in late August this year, fishing on private land downstream of the ski jumps. in 3 days, I saw one fish rise. Trico hatch used to be good this time of year. Nothing that week. Not a good dry fly hatch this time of year. Water was very low. Won't go back.

    Very enjoyable video..I felt so relaxed and brought me closer to nature just watching this. I'm relatively new to fly fishing have a fly rod which I've had for a while finally learning how to use it better and get more enjoyment out of it. Got to get up to some of those beautiful streams up in the Adirondacks my fly fishing for the moment is mostly in warm water streams mostly for panfish and bass provides for casting practice but still fun.

    This is one of the most special fly fishing places on earth. I live relatively nearby (Boston) and I’ve been up that way quite a few times. Lake Placid, Battenkill, Ausable...they’re all legendary for a reason. On a particular trip in the 90s, a rod dumped off our boat on lake placid. We came back the next day, sighted the rod on the bottom IN 20 FEET OF WATER, hooked it and brought it back up. Uncountable numbers smallmouth and trout. The entire ecosystem is like that up there. Big and clean but still comfortable and inviting. It’s kinda tough to describe unless you’ve been there yourself...

    OMG, we absolutely LOVE the Wilmington/AuSable River area! You'll never find a more beautiful area to fish or just sight-see. Waterfalls like the Monument Falls you showed at the start of the show, cliff-jumping into a deep hole of the river, surrounded by mountains, hiking, and did I mention the fishing? Don't pass up the chance for a Michigan Dog (similar to a chili dog) at the Whitebrook Dairy Bar, either. Drive a few miles through the Keene Valley, rated as one of the most scenic drives in America, and see Roaring Brook Falls, which literally leaps off the side of a mountain. Less than a mile south of that is beautiful Chapel Pond, a great place for a summer swim, where a mountain rises out of the other side of this small lake. Thank you, NFF, for visiting this magical place again!

    Beautiful pocket water with some nice wide water stretches and a few plunge pools. Haven't fish this river since around 1983 ... my Hungry Trout hat has long since worn out. I remember running into a guy in a gas station in lower Michigan, and he was wearing the same green hat as I .... it was pretty funny when I pointed to the hat on my head. Lots of beautiful creeks, rivers, ponds and lakes in upstate New York. The Ausable River (east, west and main) hold a special place in my heart. One of my favorite flies is the Ausable Wulff, which is perfect for the pocket water in the West branch ..... the first place I ever fished one. Thanks for the vid, and the wealth of info. Take care.
