Selling Raw Vintage Baseball Cards? Which ones should be graded first?

  • If you've ever asked yourself, which raw Vintage Baseball Cards should I send in for grading? The answer really depends on what you're looking to do with them.
    If you're grading your raw vintage baseball cards with the hopes of keeping them preserved and/or out of sheer curiosity, then the answer is simple. Sure, why not? At that point, it's all for fun.
    However, if you're looking to sell some of your raw vintage baseball cards, are you better off sending them in or selling as is? This video, I demonstrate this with four cards from my inventory.
    There are some things to consider:
    1. When you buy a raw vintage baseball card with the intention of re-selling, you'll need to know what they're going for in the market (both raw and graded). You'll need to reference the card against a ton of sales that have occurred in the recent past. From there, you'll be able to better understand what your return investment may look like.
    2. In this video, I share an estimated profit return that may be different from your expectations. Consider this a sliding scale. Everyone is different in terms of expectations, so I did my best here to demonstrate a return on an investment.
    3. Grading is subjective. I believe that it takes time to predict what a card may grade. That comes from your own personal submissions and time spent looking online at recent sales and photos to see what other cards have sold for (both raw and graded).

    As someone who doesn't do this when buying raw cards (because of my personal dislike for grading, etc). this was fascinating. Really enjoyed the breakdown.
    Great video man, I enjoyed it!

    Great video Sammy, exactly what I do when buying and selling cards. Condition is critical especially for cards in 60’s and 70’s. Awesome stuff

    Hi Sammy. Interesting breakdown on those four cards. I guess the key for anyone trying to buy and sell cards, is how good of an eye you have for grading and how cheap you can get the card for. As for me, being just a collector, I prefer to buy graded. I have no problem buying raw, as I always carry my Lighted Loupe with me. I also always take the card out and give it a really good look in room lighting also. Thanks for sharing pal.

      That's really all that you need to do. Have a good eye for grading and work out a deal so that you're able to feel comfortable with the price. I've always tried to be as fair as possible with dealers when buying cards to add to my inventory. I understand that both parties have to feel okay with the deal.

    Hey Thunder ! In retrospect if we could go back in time one of the safest ROI was buying low mid grade grading at SGCs $15 per and letting them go. Bench Banks Mick Mays Pete # 21 Koufax Hank all are ideal candidates…. So many folks in a cash strapped economy have resorted to
    Creativity when assembling “
    Collections”. I say that loosely as flippers have attacked the integrity of putting together a run of your fav or building a set Whats your thoughts ?

      When you say letting them go, what do you mean?

    Found this very interesting, would be good to see the fees associated with the selling. I know you set up at a lot of show so what a topical show fee is or if you sell via EBay the percentage they charge and the shipping.
    Have you ever looked at an already graded card to determine if you should crack it before selling believing it might get more raw vs. graded. Sometimes I think an undergrads card may get more cracked out would love to hear your thoughts.
    Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving Sammy!

      Thanks man! I failed to mention the additional fees in terms of selling online or at shows. I don't sell on eBay, so I'm not too sure what their fees look like. When I sell online, I sell to a small group of other collectors/dealers. It's every now and then that I do move something online. Most of it happens at shows. With shows, the fees are generally in the ballpark of $40 - $75 per table. I generally only need 1. I've only cracked one vintage card out of a slab, but for the most part, I will buy raw directly. I honestly should consider buying graded cards because of how subjective grading is. It is a risk though because it could grade lower and the swing of that happening could be a bit overwhelming. That said, I'm glad to be taking a break from dealing (with the exception of selling to friends and trusted collectors).

    Thanks Sammy! I’m doing my first SGC submission. Can I bring them to the Philly Show and just drop them off? I’m clueless how it works. Maybe saves me on shipping?

    • @SammyThunder
      @SammyThunder  9 місяців тому +1

      I believe they will be there, so yes, you can! I prefer to submit in person because it'll save me on shipping down to them. It's incredibly easy to do in person. No need to buy supplies for shipping. They will take care of it all for you. They have a great system!

    How are you buying those cards for such low prices? Have vintage cards come down that much?

  • @templebird
    @templebird 9 місяців тому +2

    Why aren't you mentioning the fees you pay once the card is sold?

    • @SammyThunder
      @SammyThunder  9 місяців тому

      That’s a good question. I don’t have insight on eBay fees as I don’t sell on that platform. That said, I generally will sell at shows and the table fee for the show is typically about $40-$50.
