    Detailing the use of this heater as an element of an off grid camper or micro home. Warnings and notifications about the power requirements to keep this going in light of the fact that it was originally engineered to be powered by the alternator from a running vehicle, and it will take over 330-400 12v watts of daytime power production to run this heater's 300 watt element, the fan, and the power loss estimated between the power generation, battery charging and battery discharge that goes along with the power draw associated with them.

    *Install was easy **fireplace.homes** good although I personally had some difficulty with the thermostat I had. Issue was mine though, not realizing that electric heaters couldn't use oil thermostats. Tip: If you are using an external thermostat, run the power to the thermostat, not the unit. Once that was squared away it worked great.*

    I am coming to this party quite late. I am a retired trucker now living full-time in my Toyota Prius. This is the space heater I use when the onboard heater cannot overcome the extreme cold I sometimes experience. It does what I need it to do. I leave my car on 24/7 and let the magical Prius circuitry do its thing but the heater does not seem to turn the car on more than before. Then again, I try to avoid the extreme cold.

    I have this heater and was working great for awhile but for some reason now it only blows cold air. I have it hooked up direct to batter w/in line fuse, fan works but no more heat. Any help would be appreciated.

    These are really just for supplemental use. May raise the temperature of a small area a few degrees but by no means is this little unit going to be able to satisfy most people's desire for "heat". 300 watts is just not enough. Helpful when you first start a vehicle because you won't get any heat from the vehicle heater until the engine has warmed up. Leave the vehicle heat off until it warms up. During that time you can run this. Let the alternator recharge the battery after starting. As far as running a unit like this off a separate battery you won't be able to run it very long. Example; a 100 amp hour deep cycle AGM battery has 300 watts available for 2 hours until you are 50% discharged. Not recommended to go below that although you can. An ordinary flooded lead acid car battery is recommended to not be discharged below 80% and has a lot less power available for something like this.

    In regards to his comment about automobile alternators having only 30amps;
    No automobile has a 30 amp alternator unless you're taking about antique tractors. My lawn tracror is 15 amps for example... enough to run lights and an air pump sometimes.
    A 70s truck will have about 60 amps. 130 to 150 amps is typical car alternator from 1990s on up. Many work trucks and RVs have dual alternators at over 300a or single one at 200-240amp. If buying a new RV spec it with highest amp alternator/s
    Long story short any reasonably modern minivan, SUV, or truck will make more than enough power to run 30 amp accessories.

      Mostly but at idle with other accessories also running the battery may actually be discharging depending on the total load.

    Just love your "In depth"-review, maan! I now know that the heater is below 50$, maaan. Who cares what wattage it draws and what temperatures you get. The main thing is that you got the price right and what the on/off switch does.

    The 300W rating is based on the heater running on 13V to 13.5V (typical system potential of a running car). Mine runs about 250W on a 12.5V battery bank.
    The 'speed control' is just a 10 ohm 3/4 turn potentiometer, which is worthless with a brushless muffin fan (because a 555 and switching FET or a fan that had a PWM speed control input would add *sooo* much to the build cost /sarc).
    Having seen the internal construction, I wouldn't pay more than $15 unless you absolutely need one.

    I'm trying to electrically heat a small 2 seat airplane cockpit. I have a dedicated odyssey pc 680 Battery to power it. I have bought this unit and another smaller one but they don't seem strong enough. I need the power of an AC small ceramic space heater w/o the AC power. Any ideas?? thanks in advance.

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  9 років тому +1

      No battery is going to keep this going for very long and I would not want to risk taxing the aircraft motor's ability to generate sufficient power to run a heater unless I knew more about how it is set up.

      OK then, but compared to what? I have tried a few 12v heaters and not found any that I consider "really good" but this seems decent. I don't get paid anything from RoadPro, so I am not married to them in falsely promoting their products, but I am not finding good options out there on 12v space heaters.

    • @DarkLinkAD
      @DarkLinkAD 4 роки тому +2

      @Art Vandelay Okay simp, ill spoon feed it to you.
      Drag your ass down to the dollar tree..
      Go to the automotive section, youll see a pack of wire, it comes wound in 3 sections.
      Use one of those windings and wrap around your insulated wrench or hammer until you read 5 amps, or you have enough that doesnt burn your hands any more..
      5 amps, 12v is a 60w warmer..
      Understand these principles and you can create a resistive heating element that would otherwise cost a pretty penny..

    Average car battery is 500-600 amp, so this heater draws about 25 amp/hr at 12V , theoretically should run for 8-10 hours. In cold weather battery output can drop as much as 50%.

    • @scdevon
      @scdevon 8 років тому +6

      +szaki That's the cold cranking amp rating, not the amp/hour rating. This heater would drain a single car battery in under an hour.

    • @szaki
      @szaki 8 років тому

      BS! Battery has about 50-60 amps, this heater don't use more than 1-2 amps/hr.
      It takes my battery to charge, from empty at 6 amp, 8-10 hrs.

    • @sausagefingers714
      @sausagefingers714 8 років тому +1

      +szaki lol 1-2 amps an hour?? thats 24 watt's max. these heaters use around 25 amps.
      another thing to consider is that if you have a 60ah battery you will not get 60ah of it.. more like 40 amp hours.
      you will be looking at about an hour run time in the real world.

    • @szaki
