  • Hi welcome back to the channel & to a video that I have wanted to get stuck right into since I got the car. So this Barn Find 64 Volvo Amazon has been parked up since 1978 in some very poor conditions, this has definatly taken its toll on the engine. So its time to get it stripped and make a game plan.

    My mechanic said I needed new spark plugs.
    I said ‘are they champion?’
    He said ‘no they’re f@#ked!’

    There is no hole behind the waterpump. There is 2 o-rings on top of the waterpump , the water goes that way to the head and drains in the back. Your engine is a B18 (1,8 liters) , you can bore it to a B20 (2 liters) and use standard parts. The B20 engine came in -69. The B18 came in -62.

      Yes we later saw that with the water pump cheers. Perfect yes we have seen it can be bored out etc. hopefully we can keep this one standard, cheers for watching and sharing your tips 👍

    Ask Frost for an engine stand for a Valentine's Day pressie. Get them to show the love. Have fun with the engine guys. Hope it can stay a matching numbers car.

      Aha I would love that but they don’t seem to sell the one I am after so I will be grabbing one soon to get things going. First off I need to find out how much all the machining is going to cost.

    Definitely looks a genuine mileage engine, I've never seen gears for the crank and cam, wasn't aware that was a thing. Was also quite shocked at how clean the gear oil is, I bet mine in my daily isn't that clean lol. So relieved that you'll be able to keep it numbers matching after all.

      @SimpsonsClassics  Рік тому

      Yes I am glad you agree I was very shocked when taking this apart to see just how little things had worn it’s made my feel very cool about this build and it’s potentially saveable to keep this a nice numbers marching car. Cheers for watching bud 👍

      I think timing gears are the oldest engine design, older than belts and chains. Aircooled VW engines had timing gears until the end I think. The oldest timing gears were metal and quite noisy but after WWI they started using synthetic materials like paxolin that were quieter.

    I really enjoyed watching that. Engine's & people stripping them is fascinating 👏🏻. Myself personally I'd keep the engine how it came off the production line, I know it needs reboring but that's unavoidable. You may already have said this but my wife wants to know your dogs name? Also that engine degreaser worked well 👍🏻.

      Thanks buddy glad you enjoyed it. I haven’t ever gone this far into a engine and really enjoyed it. I really want to keep it a numbers matching car so that’s the plan going forward. Aha her name is Luna. Cheers for watching bud 👍

    Personally I would keep the engine, as well as the car in the same original condition as it left the factory!!!

    Work well underway there. Lightened fly wheel will help it rev up..nicely. If block is ok you could up B20 head on, this does give you good torque. I did this to my Amazon as kid and drove it for years with no problems. And have done this again to p1800 now. Bigger valves on b20 and normal valve stem seals. Good luck and keep going..

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  Рік тому +1

      Oh yes we are well underway now. Hopefully the machining comes back ok then we can make a game plan. I think I want to keep it as standard has possible for now and build another engine at a later date to maybe swap out and enjoy. Cheers for watching

    Great vid. I'm in the process of doing the same to a 64 Ruddspeed B18 engine. Regards the timing gears, Volvo fitted a fibre timing gear on the camshaft to reduce noise. It has a steel centre bonded to the fibre outer gear. These are prone to wear which yours doesn't seem to have. If you need a new one, fibre or steel gears are available.

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  Рік тому

      Hey thanks for the comment Chris. Yes I later found this out about the gear from a friend of mine I didn’t know it was a fibre one it’s pretty cool that and yes there doesn’t look like any wear at all which is nice. Cheers for watching

    When you mentioned ridges I thought you meant wear ridges in the bores but it looks like it hasn't had much wear. It would be worth also removing the valves to check them and the guides.

      No it definitely looks low milage this engine. Definitely it will get a full head rebuild to buddy cheers for watching

    I'd be tempted to install a T5 turbo unit but that denies the originality maybe then put the amazon into the 340 but then i was always a rebel !!!

    It would be fascinating to know the history of the car. So much looking so good yet the water galleries are so choked. I wonder whether the cylinder liners are compromised. Best wishes and good luck.

      @@SimpsonsClassics It reminds me of Pete C's Bramble. "Oh, my wife didn't like the car so she drove it for two years and then we parked it behind the barn!".

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  Рік тому

      Milage can’t be confirmed for sure but it’s been sat since 1978 in a wet garage this is how the damage had been done we believe
