I am 65 years old. When I was very young, probably about 7 years old, my grandmother made Cathedral Window Quilts. I would spend many hours cutting out the squares for her. The template was card board, one size for muslin, and one size for the "pretty" fabric. I would pride myself for how big my stacks were!!! She sewed them all by hand and they were beautiful. In my early 30's, I decided I was going to make one. I thought I could surely accomplish this, because my grandmother had absolutely no formal education. WRONG!! I had no clue, my quilt never got big enough to cover a barbie doll bed . I think I can try again, with the help of your instruction. My sister has one of these quilts that my grandmother made, and I don't think my sister ever cut out a square !!!! Bless you for the video and the memories that have surfaced for me.
Oh, wow! These types of comments are my absolute favorite comments! Thank you so much for sharing this! It truly makes my heart happy knowing it brought back memories and has inspired you to make one. Thank you so much! 🥰 Please let me know if you have any further questions about this. I am happy to help. ❤️ It isn't fair that your sister got one and didn't even cut a square! What? 😆
When going through my mother's things, my sisters and I found our mom's unfinished cathedral quilt. My sister said, this would be a nice wedding gift for your daughter. I am so glad I found your video as I have a little hope that I can make it happen. Thanks!
25yrs, is shorter than my quilt! I started mine in the early 80s having entered a bolster cushion, in cathedral patchwork, into a competition. I too was a novice at hand sewn patchwork but having won 3rd prize I thought,I can do this! So I set about planning a quilt. Family and working life intervened so I set it aside. Now in 2024 I’ve revisited it and realised that my hand sewing and patchwork piecing back then was embarrassing!! It’s three quarters done with hundreds of squares cut, needles and thread still with the project. After 40 years, developing my skills in embroidery & patchwork I’m determined to finish it and leave a completed work for whom ever wants to enjoy it. Thank you for being so honest in your tutorial. It has inspired me to accept what was and enjoy finishing my UFO.
Oh my goodness! I love this! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this pattern! I love that you have a Forever Project, too! I am thrilled that you liked this tutorial and that it has inspired you. That is always my goal. 🥰
My mother made a queen size Cathedral Window Quilt when I was a child. I still remember her hand stitching that quilt. She started with 9-1/2 in squares. My brother still has it & the quilt is beautiful! So is your quilt. That is a lot of handwork. Great tutorial!
Oh wow! Thank you for sharing! It is a lot of handwork--so true! I wish I would have started with a bigger square. Hindsight! LOL! Thank you for your kind words, Reta! ❤️
I made one my mom liked it and decided to help with it. I started with 91/2 squares. Stared putting animals, cartoon animal, any kind. Then different characters, odd things, bazooka bubble gum wrapper material. Loved doing it, one reason I did it with my mom, memories.
@@SewtheDistance How do you figure out the ratio between the size of the muslin and the printed fabric? I’m thinking I would like to have the pod be 4 inches or maybe even five. What size square should the muslin be? Surely there’s a formula there somewhere😂
32 years ago I was ill and couldn't do very much. My sister was having a baby so I made one of these quilts - cot size. My niece loved it and it became her comfort blanket for her first five years. Now, that niece is having her first baby so I'm making one for her. I couldn't remember how and didn't know it was called cathedral window. Thank goodness for youtube! There seem to be so many different ways of doing it but this is the way I remember. Thank you! Wish me luck! x
Oh wow! This is so awesome! I LOVE that you made one for your sister and now are making one for your niece! What a wonderful gift! I also love that this video helped you! Thank you so much for sharing. 🥰 This encourages me to make more and more videos. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the video that provides some encouragement for what I have called my CWQ since 1977; I started it when pregnant with my first child during a very hot summer, thinking I would surely finish it for a wedding gift if not before. It is still a work-in-progress thanks to life getting in the way and the need for the instant gratification provided by garment and household sewing. The CWQ has traveled with me on almost every trip I've made (I am doing it entirely by hand). Many business and vacation trip memories are in it, along with scraps from projects for my sons and their children. My joined blocks are currently joined in six 3'x3' panels and I feel as if I am getting close so I've started working on it at home (a paired block a day) and am shooting for my youngest grandchild's wedding .... he's nine, so I have a bit of time... 😃 Starting a CWQ is a commitment if doing it the traditional way, especially by hand. My fat quarter collection will go into a few more contemporary machine-stitched cathedral windows... but they won't have the memories!
Oh wow! I love this, too! You have encouraged me with your experience. I do feel like it is a scrapbook of my life, in a way. I love that about this project. I honestly don't want it to ever end. I was just working on this again last week and did sew it together into a large piece. My thought was it wouldn't end up in the discard pile if something (when something) happens to me. 😀 With two sons, you never know! LOL! I am going to keep going with it to make it bigger and bigger as long as I can until the Good Lord calls me Home. It really is a forever project and it sounds like yours is, too. Thank you for sharing this! 🥰
Yes, it,is a quilt!!!!! I think it honors the, past quilt a,Wes who didn’t even have the nuce lighting we have today! Yours will get done - eventually😄😄🥴
Yes, I think it's a quilt. My great aunt used to make these many years ago and I was so fascinated by the process, but for some reason, I've never made one. Thank you for this video. I think I just found my next quilt project.
I found one, started by someone at a rummage sale. It broke my heart to see it so neglected so I bought it for 1 dollar, had to wash it as it had stains and smelled bad, but it came out of the machine looking good. I have been working on it off and on for about 8 months now. I could not match the fabric in the piece I found so I just decided to go with what I had on hand and it’s fine. I think the different fabric will one day tell a story of how it must have been made by more then one person. Hope I finish it or on to the next person who finds it. I do it by machine and the pattern it makes on the back is really nice.
Oh, I love that you saved this! A few other people have said they use the machine, too. I will have to give this a try with a different project. I think a Christmas pillow would be lovely! Thanks for the tip and thank you for sharing about your project! 😍
Wow, so cool to see this come together. Yes, I'd call it a quilt as it is made by stitching up multiple layers of fabric. What great memories you've got in that!
Thank you! When my Mom passed, she left me an unfinished one & was sure I could finish it. I was most unsure until now. Great presentation. Thanks to my friend Jackie and her Momma Jean for getting me this video. I'm going to finish that quilt! ❤
YAYYYY! Oh my goodness! My heart is so happy! This is what it is all about for me! Thank you for sharing! You made my day. 🥰 Let me know if you need additional help!
I am so glad you did this video! I just came across a bag with a fairly big piece of completed work that my grandmother and I did together about 45 years ago. I did not remember how to do it. My oldest daughter looked up this video and now might be interested in working on this with me. Who knows we might get a lap size completed and have a three generation heirloom. Thank you for your time and talent.
Oh my goodness! I LOVE THIS! I am incredibly happy this helps you finish this quilt along side your daughter. What a wonderful treasure! Thank you for sharing this! This made my day!
This is so funny, I started a Cathedral WiInddow quilt when I was probably in my late 20's. I'm not sure where the small piece is now. I didn't get far on it because I didn't like handwork. Last year I took up EPP & love it. It only took 50+ years to find joy in hand piecing. I'm sure that having a less hectic life helps!! I love your quilt & I don't think you should correct any of your misteps unless it is absolutely neccessary. It's a story of how far you've come as a quilter. I hope you document your journey to go along with the quilt.
Oh, I love this so much! Thank you for sharing, Linda! This is wonderful! I was a cross stitcher before becoming a quilters, so I think that background helped with my love of hand quilting/stitching. I can see how some just don't like it, however. I am happy to hear you are doing EPP! I love EPP, too! I really haven't been documenting this journey, but I will have to start. Hopefully my kids will see this video and think twice about putting it in a dumpster after I am going, especially if it is still not finished! LOL! 😍
I've never seen a cathedral quilt before. Think I might have a go as it looks like a nice relaxing quilt to make during the dark old winter. Another good wY to use up alot of crumbs.
Love cathedral windows I have been making them for years. I used single pods for Christmas ornaments and attached them as tag to gifts. YES, it is a quilt. In early times they only used layers of fabric. Crazy quilting only uses layers of fabric too, done in Victorian era Your demonstration was great!! Thanks
50+ years ago I watched a lady work on a Catheral Window, she stood at her ironing board & did it all by hand. I was hooked! Years later, my sister gave me a book that showed how to make it by machine & slowly mine is growing! Beautiful design! I'll leave mine to my Caralina😊😊
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I began quilting back in 1976 and always wanted to do a Cathedral Window quilt, but thought I would never live long enough to finish it! (I usually do simple, traditional quilt patterns and really don't like the look of the machine sewn Cathedral Window patterns...they seem a bit fake to me.) At 72, I am just finishing up a couple of Grandma's Flower Garden quilts for my granddaughters, which they helped pick fabric scraps for. It has taken 2 years for me to get the tops done (EPP hexies) but the actual quilting is still to go. Nevertheless, I do think I will go ahead and begin this Cathedral Window quilt, but I'm going to challenge my sisters and my daughters to combine our efforts this year and see what we come up with. (Otherwise, I seriously doubt I would live long enough or have the dexterity to finish it! LOL). We could have a "put it together party" and draw straws for the end result (which would, hopefully be big enough to be called a "quilt"). It might be a pipe dream, but I'm ready to try! Thanks again for the inspiration and clear instructions!
I made one of these over 30 years ago. It was queen size. Took me four years to make it and I did it on the sewing machine! It is very heavy. Love your tip using the template plastic. It's a beautiful quilt/coverlet.
That is awesome! I will have to try using the machine with this technique on a different project. Many have mentioned it. I am curious now! LOL! Thank you so much!
@@juliamedina1214 It does weigh a ton! I gave it to my parents. They use it for decoration only. Might be good for someone who needs a weighted blanket. 😁
Hi Kris. UA-cam thought I'd enjoy this video, & I'm really happy they did. My older n'bor had a pillow on her couch like this, & I loved it and inquired about it. She couldn't remember what it was called (age). But I had found out using UA-cam. So I made a few Christmas ornaments like this & was amazed at how easy it is. Then I bought some pretty white fabric to do my own pillow cover, but have never started it, tho' I really want to. UA-cam keeps bringing up projects, lol and I've started a couple & wanted to finish them first (but alas, my eyes have not been the same since I went thro' major surgery/not for my eyes, ugh). So I feel blessed just to be able to see, & I do a little just bc I luv it so much. Thx for your encouragement & your easy style of teaching. You make the hand sewing look easy, as a left-hander. I saw comments saying they machine sew it, so I'm considering that. It's so very beautiful when done!!!! You should be proud of yourself, 25 yrs or not. Thx a bunch ❤️
You are so so kind! Thank you! I love it when UA-cam knows what you want before you do, or at least thinks it knows. LOL! Let me know if you have any further questions. I am happy to help!
I was just gifted a partially finished cathedral window quilt that my Great Grandmother started. I’d say it’s at least 50-60 years old looking at the fabrics. I also got the squares she’s cut for the center. Very blessed that my cousin thought of me.
That is awesome! What a wonderful gift! To think you will be working on the quilt she worked on. I just love that! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for sharing your story!
I made one a few years ago because I saw one at an auction. I didn't know what it was called til I looked it up (Thank goodness we now have Google). The squares I started with were 11 inches. And finished at 7 inches, I think. But I machine sewed the squares together corner to corner then tacked down the middles. I tried hand sewing the squares together. Didn't like the look, I did hand sewed all the middle squares in. It took me three years because I had to buy the base fabric 3 or 4 yards at a time. When I had extra $$. Or sometimes I couldn't find it at the store. (Did not buy a bolt full, should have). It has so many colors in it. It might not be perfect but it's close enough for me. I love it.
Oh my! Thank you for sharing this. I always wondered how these are made and just assumed it was way to complicated for me. But you make it look so relaxing 😁
Thanks for the tutorial, I’ve always thought about making a cathedral windows. Those are the easiest instructions I’ve seen, plus it’s the first time I’ve seen it demonstrated live, , and that’s how I learn the best.
The Cathedral Window quilt pattern is one of my favorites. My mother-in-law made this style of quilt for us when we married. I hope to make one myself, so I appreciate your tutorial.
My mother made my family cathedral Christmas ornaments from my great grandmother s quilt that she started and never finished. You make it look so easy. Thank you for reminding me of those special ornaments.
I too have a "forever" project. My mother passed away two years ago this coming week. Her baby crib had a cathedral windows quilt made by her grandmother and my sister and I loved getting to use it (most often when we were sick). I was able to get a number of mom's shirts and blouses and thought making a C.W. for my sister would be nice since I got the original quilt. I've been working on this on and off for a year. I so wished I had your video when I began. My accuracy is juvenile and my original throw size project has shrunk down to a wall hanging. But now that I've seen YOUR technique, I think I may try again and make her that throw. Thank you for sharing your talents with the world. ☺️
First, I am so very sorry about your mom. I can't imagine what you are going through. It makes my heart happy that you have the quilt that was worked on by your great grandmother and your sister! I also love that this video helped you! That's what it is all about. Thank you so much for sharing. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the easy to follow and understand production! I always assumed that the Cathedral Windows pattern was super complicated, but now I feel like this would be the perfect project to work on during my quilting get togethers with the girls! I need something that is easy that I can throw in a bag and take with me. I'm psyched!
That quilt is a labor of love!!! So much time needed to make one of those. Always wanted to make a cathedral quilt now I know the time needed...WOW. Thnx
You're welcome! It is funny--I was just working on this last night. 🥰 I work on it and then put it away for a few weeks. I go through spirts. It will truly be a forever project. Thank you so much for watching and sharing! ❤️
Excellent tutorial. Thank you! I made a cathedral window quilt this year. What I did with the holes was, I cut out small circles and topstitched them on each hole. It worked great and I think it added interest to the quilt. Happy sewing 🧵 everyone ☮️
This was a wonderful tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing this. My husband and I have a road trip planned for next year and this is the perfect project for our car ride. I was wondering what project I should take, now I know. Thank you again. 💗
You are so welcome!! Yay! ❤️ This always comes with me on road trips. It’s perfect! And if you can pick up some fabric to include in it from your trip, it makes it even more special. So happy this tutorial has helped you and that you are going to make it! ❤️
To me it is a quilt and a beautiful one. I am making the Double Wedding Ring quilt now. I will be stocking up on the background fabric I need for the Cathedral Window quilt. As soon as the Double WeddingR ing is finished I will start my CWQ. Thanks for the tutorial. Blessings to you.
I love the Cathedral window quilt. I made one a couple years ago and put a border on my. I keep the edges out and sewed them to the border it’s beautiful. It took me 2 1\2 years to finish it. God bless you and your family have a blessed evening.
Hi Kris….that’s gorgeous. It’s a bit late for me to make one like this…but who knows! I’ve always been intrigued and now you’ve shown how to make them… thanks so much. ❤️🇦🇺
There are so many out there. If you are in the United States, go to a Joann Fabrics store and ask to see the muslin. They will definitely have several different ones to chose from. Get the mid-priced one. That could be my preference now, if I had it do over again. I hope this helps!
Awesome tutorial for the original Cathedral Window Quilt. I love the idea of sewing a bunch of pods and then being able to sew in the color squares while sitting with hubby in the evening. Thank you for sharing!
That is a beautiful design. If it’s taking you 25 yrs, it would take me 50 and I don’t think I’ll live to be 113…lol, so I doubt I’d ever make it. Yes! It is a quilt even though it doesn’t have batting or binding. I know because I read an article about southern quilters back in the early 1900’s not wanting a heavy quilt for the hot summer nights. They made them with lightweight cotton and only put the backing on them. I wish I could remember where I read the article, but right now I don’t recall. If I run across it again, I’ll have to send it to you. I hope you finish it completely, because it will be a family heirloom quilt to cherish for all your future generations.
Thanks, Christine! I have a few videos on coverlets that don't have a batting in them in my Lessons from an Old Quilt series. There are some wonderful coverlet quilts out there, that's for sure! I guess what makes me question where. or not it is a quilt of not is that it isn't pieced, it doesn't have a batting, and it isn't quilted. I am still trying to figure out if I think it is a quilt or not. LOL! Thanks for sharing! Here's a coverlet video if you are interested: ua-cam.com/video/IrZDjiahXhc/v-deo.html
Your quilt (forever in progress) is so pretty! I recognize some of the fabrics in it! What a fun way to use small scraps. I've made a modern cathedral windows (all with 3.5" squares), but I've never made the handmade version with the folded pockets. It's really beautiful!
Thank you so much! It is so much fun seeing these old scraps, isn't it? They bring back memories of so much quilts I have made over the years. Glad you love this, too! I really need to get this out again for the winter. Thank you for the reminder! ❤️
this was very helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I think it should still be called a quilt even without the batting, because most of us when we think of quilts, we think of them as home made blankets.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have always thought they were beautiful but had no idea that it was this easy to make one I can’t wait to start my own. And I love the fact that you’ve been working on it for 25 years and you’re still going. You are one of my very favorite quilt teachers. I look forward to your videos.
You’re welcome 😊 And wow! Thank you for saying this! I am flattered to be part of your quilting journey, Trey, and so happy to help. Please let me know if you have further questions about this process. ❤️
Perfect timing! I first got interested in quilting at a sleepover at a friend’s house when her mom showed us the cathedral window quilt that she was quilting from all of her kid’s old clothes. My friend was so embarrassed but I was intrigued. I’ve made other quilts but just decided today to make one by hand (as the mother was doing) and that it would be a Cathedral Window. The year the mom showed me her quilt in progress and how to make the blocks? 1982.
Oh wow! I LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing! Isn't it interesting how things like this stick with you for many years? ❤️❤️❤️ Let me know if you have any further questions about it! I am happy to help!
Thank you for your tutorial!!!! The best one I have seen, and easy to follow!!! Now I saved it, and can start my quilt!!! Yes, it totally is a quilt....as you go!!!
A friend of my moms gave me a beautiful one , she said it was her grandmother’s and she didn’t have any living children to pass it on too . I love it ,it’s about a queen side ,so I think it was use as a bedspread. I don’t know for sure she passed about 6 years ago and I never thought to ask . I wish I had ask her more about it ,she was in her 80s .
I helped my grandmother make one of these many years ago. It becomes very heavy and would be even heavier with batting. Yes it is a quilt. We hand sewed it all even the little pods.
I always wanted to know how this quilt was made! Now I do and it looks pretty simple. Love the idea of hand piecing and then at the end it’s completely finished. Thanks for sharing!❤️❤️❤️
You are so welcome! So happy this helped! Usually when you say handwork, people get nervous, but surprisingly it is very forgiving and easy to stitch. Thank you so much for watching! ❤️❤️❤️
What a pleasure to see you working on this quilt! My mother made a full size Cathedral Window quilt 45 years ago as a gift for her mother. All hand cut and hand sewn, just as you are doing. I have the quilt now, and it is a real show piece. Thanks for reminding me of all the work that went into making that quilt!
Oh, wow! What a treasure! LOVE this! I am happy to hear this video helped you understand how it was constructed. Thank you so much for sharing your story, Lynnie!
This is a very lovely project. Loves amazing. When I was younger I did hand sewing and even hand quilted a few quilts. But now a days hand Sewing is a 4 letter word 😳 LOL, thx for sharing always enjoy watching .
I've always admired these quilts (yep, I said quilts), but didn't really know how to do them. I love the idea of hand sewing. Thanks for all the details!
When my Mother-in-law made a full- size cathedral window quilt. she used the same fabric for the whole quilt (a lovely turquoise - small print). When finished she cut small circles, and with a tiny bit if batting inside the circle gathered it around the edge. and sewed it to the intersections of the blocks. I can only guess it was to strenthen.. the quilt. It is very lovely. I love your channel. Especially lessons from an old quilt.
What a wonderful idea! I love that! I have seen buttons at the intersections, but never puffs like this. Such a wonderful idea! Thank you so much, Paula, for your kind words, too. I am so happy you enjoy my videos. More lessons from an old quilt to come! ❤️
I learned how,to make, the Cathedral Window block way back probably 1980-81 when wemdidntmabsoliteltmeceeytnung by hand! That meant we had to,press each side of the beginning square perfectly! A big bummer! And then went in to,do the same thing but by hand! I love hand work but I didn’t love this block - not at all! Thank heavens someone somewhere figured out how to sew most of the block by machine! Your video has helped me to remember a sample I have who knows where and I think I just might include it as a small project for my handwork monthly group at my guild! We don’t allow any machines though so I’ll have to work that part out % maybe just have me do the machine sewing of the beginning till it’s time to fold in the corners and tack them😄😄🥴. Thanks for this video and helping me remember a really wonderful old pattern. We could turn the individual 4-square piece into Christmas ornaments!!!!!!
Wow! Thank you for sharing! This story made me chuckle a few times. 😂😍 I am thrilled that this brought back memories, too! Thank you so much! And YES! A Christmas ornament would be beautiful!
Thank you so much! I am sorry about your arthritis. 😞 There are a few videos out there on doing something similar by machine. Here's one by Tracy at The Sewing Channel. I hope this helps! ua-cam.com/video/2etvGCgKoic/v-deo.html
i am interested in this style of quilt...and yes it might not be warm but it is still a cover. it reminds me of the way a manx quilt block is made and sewed to make a light weight coverlet.
I started my cathedral window back in the mid 90's when I first started quilting and fell in love with it. I purchased a whole bolt of muslin as well, lol. I haven't gotten very far over the years but I've picked it up again and I'm working on it. My beginning squares are 9 1/2" and my center squares are 2 1/2". I sew my pods together in 9 patches before putting the centers in, I put them in color families, sort of a planned chaos. Your quilt is quite lovely, thanks for sharing your tutorial.
Ohhhhh! Love the idea of using color families! I am sure it is amazing! And the bigger squares--I wish I would have done this. Live and learn! I am glad to hear I am not the only one with a forever project. Thank you for sharing! ❤️❤️❤️
WOW! Your quilt is beautiful! I would never do one. Too much hand sewing for me. I’m a machine gal but am so impressed with those of you who do hand work. Rock on!
What a great video and full of tips to make this beautiful quilt. Notice I called it a quilt? It is a quilt, a classic quilt. Thanks for the video👏👏😍 I love your channel❤
I think the Cathedral Windows is one of the most beautiful quilt patterns there is!!! Unfortunately I am not much of a hand sewer. Actually I am terrible at it lol but …. I joined a guild this past fall and am slowly (very slowly) stepping outside of my comfort zone. Maybe some day soon I’ll bite the bullet!! Thanks Kris!! ❤
It really is a beautiful pattern, isn’t it? Glad to hear you joined a guild. I hope you give this technique a try. It is so rewarding! Thank you so much for watching, sharing, and commenting. ❤️
I love this quilt. It's beautiful. Looks fun to make and you know for our climate it's a good weight. We don't need too many thick blankets. This weight would be good for Autumn. Thanks for showing us how to do it. I have a new project in mind for my scraps.
Wow!..what a great tutorial!🤗 I received a pc if a cathedral window quilt my grandmother had been wkg on before she died...I was in my 30’s..and thought this was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen😮 It took me awhile to find out how to do it! My first time doing a quilt as well I wkg on it some..every now and again It’s been over 30 yrs ago since I acquired it ..and I think I’m ready to get it finished !..Thanks for your help🥰🙏🏻
Oh, wow! That's a ton of work! That is my only regret--I wish I could have used a better muslin. Oh well. Live and learn! I have no idea how big this will end up being or if I will ever finish it. We will see! 😍
I recently found a quilt going through my in-laws items. I put it up for sale for $40. ( it had some stainns in the folds) My sister in law said she was unaware of anyone in the family who quilted. I received an offer from someone, but they lived too far away, and I didn't want to ship it. Anyways, she told me it was a pattern called the cathedral window. I was curious to see how it was made, so that is how I found you. Seeing how much work is involved, I'm either going to keep it or up the price. Thank you for this video.
Thank you for this tutorial. Your quilt is lovely, and your instructions are very easy to follow. I like that you have pieces from many projects that you have made, it makes it a truly treasured piece when you are done with it! I liked and subscribed to your channel, and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Thank you so much and welcome to my channel! So happy you love this one. It is a great "forever" project. This comment reminds me to pull it out again and keep working on it. ❤️
I love this tutorial. Thank you! I am a visual learner & the pattern I have, even though it has photos, made no sense to me. Thank you for the clear instructions.

Oh wow! Love this! What a wonderful project!
@@SewtheDistance How do you figure out the ratio between the size of the muslin and the printed fabric? I’m thinking I would like to have the pod be 4 inches or maybe even five. What size square should the muslin be? Surely there’s a formula there somewhere😂
@@marilynnaylor4679 I started with a 9 1/2 square. The pods are 4 inches.
Thank you.
I just found mine that I started in 1985 cleaning up my bins. Can’t wait to continue making it.
Sounds like it's the perfect time to jump back in on it. You can do it! 😊❤️
Without batting it is more like a coverlet but Yes it is definitely in the quilt family. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome! I like saying it is in the quilt family. That is a perfect qualifier. Thank you!
I made mine back in the early 80s and that’s what I always call it if people ask. A coverlet. The folds give it warmth and boy is it heavy.
As long as it has at least 3 layers, it's a quilt. No batting required. A quilt this heavy doesn't need batting anyway.
True, Dusty! I like the way you think!
Starting a CWQ is a commitment if doing it the traditional way, especially by hand.
LOL! True! Maybe someday! 😂😂😂
Yes, I think it's a quilt. My great aunt used to make these many years ago and I was so fascinated by the process, but for some reason, I've never made one. Thank you for this video. I think I just found my next quilt project.
YAY! That makes me so happy! I hope you give it a try! Let me know if you have any questions. ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful! I Love it! Such tiny pieces & I do call it a Quilt. So it’s a YES from me!
Thank you! I agree! ❤️
I loved how simply you showed this quilt. I'm hooked. Thank you
Yay! So glad you like it and are hooked! Thanks for watching and sharing!
ok... so I have about three years to go before I start mine... 😆
LOVE this!
With your tips, maybe I can start it in about two years!
I love it! 😂 Once you do start, let me know if you have any questions. Happy to help!
Wow, so cool to see this come together. Yes, I'd call it a quilt as it is made by stitching up multiple layers of fabric. What great memories you've got in that!
Thank you! I love your reasoning! ❤️
I was going to say the same thing. It’s really cool!!!
Yes it's a quilt. I figure it a "quilt as you go" method. Just so beautiful. Tx
You are so welcome! Thank you! I wasn't sure since it really isn't quilted. 🤷🏻♀️
So beautiful! 🎉
Thank you! ❤️
Yes! This is perfect for those long winter months. Glad it has inspired you! Let me know if you have any questions. ❤️
Love cathedral windows
I have been making them for years. I used single pods for Christmas ornaments and attached them as tag to gifts. YES, it is a quilt. In early times they only used layers of fabric. Crazy quilting only uses layers of fabric too, done in Victorian era
Your demonstration was great!! Thanks
Thank you so much! I love making this forever project. ❤️
Love it! I am so happy you figured out how to do it by machine. Thank you so much for sharing! ❤️
They are very heavy. I swear mine weighs about ten pounds
I have the quilt that my grandmother made for my mom, she made three for her children and when she was done she said Never again but I treasure it
I can understand that! 🥰 I love that you have her quilt. What a treasure!
I love it.
Love this! Thank you for sharing how you made it! They are so beautiful and fun! Glad you found it on Google and gave it a try. ❤️❤️❤️
Oh my! Thank you for sharing this. I always wondered how these are made and just assumed it was way to complicated for me. But you make it look so relaxing 😁
You are so welcome! I find it very relaxing. I hope you do, too! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the tutorial, I’ve always thought about making a cathedral windows. Those are the easiest instructions I’ve seen, plus it’s the first time I’ve seen it demonstrated live, , and that’s how I learn the best.
Oh, thank you! You are so welcome, Elizabeth! Glad it was helpful! ❤️
I love a Cathedral Window Quilt💕
Many great tips in this video❣
Love the template for ironing Kris❣
Another excellent video...thank you🤩
Thank you so much, Tracy! ❤️❤️❤️
The Cathedral Window quilt pattern is one of my favorites. My mother-in-law made this style of quilt for us when we married. I hope to make one myself, so I appreciate your tutorial.
I love that you have one! What a wonderful gift! I hope you try it and am happy you like the tutorial. Thank you for sharing, Estela!
My mother made my family cathedral Christmas ornaments from my great grandmother s quilt that she started and never finished. You make it look so easy. Thank you for reminding me of those special ornaments.
That is awesome! Love this, Theresa! What a wonderful way to use the old unfinished quilt. So happy it bought back memories. ❤️
YAY! So glad you love it and are going to try it! So much fun and perfect for on-the-go projects!
I wondered how this was made. Thanks for tutorial.
You’re welcome 😊 Need me to bring it tonight? We can get you started on your very own! 😎
Oh my goodness! I feel so much better I've been working on mine for 35 years!!
Yay! Love that we are in the same club. Lol! ❤️
So would you not recommend starting one?
It brings back memories of many years ago I made this. Good refresher course.almost made me cry, thanks
Awww! Wow! So glad it brought back memories. Happy tears, I hope! ❤️
Loved the slog cabin. And the window, thanks , thanks
Glad you enjoyed it ❤️
I started one years ago and couldn’t remember how to make the units…20 years later…I may get it started again. Thanks so much!
Yay! I am so happy this helped! You are so welcome! ❤️❤️❤️
Finally understand how it's done!! Best tutorial on this topic seen by me. Tfs, hugs, Chel 🌸
Thank you so much! I am happy to hear that! ❤️
Excellent tutorial. Thank you! I made a cathedral window quilt this year. What I did with the holes was, I cut out small circles and topstitched them on each hole. It worked great and I think it added interest to the quilt. Happy sewing 🧵 everyone ☮️
Thank you so much! That's a great idea! That would be perfect!
Love it as a topper for my bed on those cold cold nights!!
Oh! Perfect!
Thank you! Double wedding ring is on my quilting bucket list! LOVE them! Blessings to you, too!
Excellent tutorial 😊 I kept missing a step but your direction is spot on 🙌🙌
Thank you! I am so happy this is helpful!
I love the Cathedral window quilt. I made one a couple years ago and put a border on my. I keep the edges out and sewed them to the border it’s beautiful. It took me 2 1\2 years to finish it. God bless you and your family have a blessed evening.
Borders would be beautiful on this! Thank you for sharing! Blessings to you and your family, too! 🥰
Hi Kris….that’s gorgeous. It’s a bit late for me to make one like this…but who knows! I’ve always been intrigued and now you’ve shown how to make them… thanks so much. ❤️🇦🇺
So glad you like it! They are fun to make, especially since when you are done, you are done. ❤️
❤ so nice I promised my daughter I’d make her a quilt x (not good at sewing but I may try this one x fingers crossed x
Wonderful! Let me know if you have any questions! Happy to help. ❤️
❤ hello could you give me which muslin to get so it lasts x not too expensive yet not too cheap please , thank you x
You are so welcome! That's exactly how I do it. It is relaxing and rewarding. ❤️
I had to watch twice LOL remembered most of the steps and measurements but not all. Thank you for the detailed instructions.
You’re welcome 😊 So glad it is helpful! ❤️
@@SewtheDistance I watched it. Thanks.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching. I agree with you. ❤️
Oh wow! Thank you SO MUCH! This made my day! Let me know if you have any questions! ❤️❤️❤️
Oh, I love this! What a treasure you have! Thank you for watching and for sharing!
I helped my grandmother make one of these many years ago. It becomes very heavy and would be even heavier with batting. Yes it is a quilt. We hand sewed it all even the little pods.
Love this! I love it when things like this bring back memories. Quilts are magical.
I appreciate this tutorial so much! I started one 18 years ago and couldn’t remember how I did it! Thank you!
Yay! So glad this is helpful!
That is a lot of work. I could see me doing it.I might use a 10in. Square. It’s a work of art❤
Thank you so much! 🥰
That's a great idea! Love that!
This is a very lovely project. Loves amazing. When I was younger I did hand sewing and even hand quilted a few quilts. But now a days hand Sewing is a 4 letter word 😳 LOL, thx for sharing always enjoy watching .
Thank you! I really enjoy this project! I understand! LOL! That's how I feel about Y-seams! 😂
I've always admired these quilts (yep, I said quilts), but didn't really know how to do them. I love the idea of hand sewing. Thanks for all the details!
You are so welcome! If you try one, please let me know if you have any questions. Happy to help, Dotty! ❤️
I have one I started in 1992! Hand stitched until I can find a way to machine sew. Thanks!
I love that I am not alone! LOL! Although I am still hand-stitching it. 😂
I find this Cathedral Windows to be my most favorite of quilts.
They are pretty amazing, aren't they? ❤️
When my Mother-in-law made a full- size cathedral window quilt. she used
the same fabric for the whole quilt (a lovely turquoise - small print). When finished
she cut small circles, and with a tiny bit if batting inside the circle gathered it around the edge.
and sewed it to the intersections of the blocks.
This has been on my bucket list forever. You have inspired me.
Oh yay! I am so happy this inspired you! ❤️❤️❤️
Perfectly explained! I love how you teach. Thanks so much. I would love to do but it would have to be by machine. My arthritis would not allow it. :(.
Yes! It is a little like that. I hadn't made that connection! Thank you for this and for watching! ❤️
Rock on!
Thank you so much! I completely understand that. 😎
I’m going to use my machine for all of my stitching. It took me a lot of technique experiments to decide what looked best.
What a great video and full of tips to make this beautiful quilt. Notice I called it a quilt? It is a quilt, a classic quilt.
Thanks for the video👏👏😍 I love your channel❤
Thank you, Di! ❤️❤️❤️ Love your channel, too!
I started my cathedral window quilt in 1982. It still isn’t finished! I had never heard it called a forever quilt but it’s a very appropriate name!
I am so glad I am not the only one! haha! As for the name, that's what I call it, but I haven't heard it before either. 😬😀🥰
Excellent teacher
Thank you! 😃
A labour of love project, very beautiful
Thank you, Fay! ❤️
What a great tutorial
Thank you! 🥰 So glad you enjoyed it!
Love it! Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much! ❤️
A lot of memories in that quilt. I made a Christmas pillow using a cathedral pattern. Your quilt is beautiful. Thank you for sharing
You are so welcome! Thank you for you kind words. Ohhhhh, I love the idea of making a Christmas pillow with this technique! How fun would that be?
I love this quilt. It's beautiful. Looks fun to make and you know for our climate it's a good weight. We don't need too many thick blankets. This weight would be good for Autumn. Thanks for showing us how to do it. I have a new project in mind for my scraps.
Yes! Thank you! It is a fun life-long project, for sure! Hoping to respond to your email today or tomorrow! So sorry about the delay! ❤️
@@SewtheDistance Believe me I know you have been very busy. No worries.

I received a pc if a cathedral window quilt my grandmother had been wkg on before she died...I was in my 30’s..and thought this was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen😮
It took me awhile to find out how to do it!
My first time doing a quilt as well
I wkg on it some..every now and again
It’s been over 30 yrs ago since I acquired it ..and I think I’m ready to get it finished !..Thanks for your help🥰🙏🏻
So happy this is helpful!
I love that you are completing your grandmother's quilt. 🥰 What a wonderful way to honor her.
I love this tutorial! I’m hoping to find scraps from all quilts I’ve made and start one of these! Thank you!
YAYYYYY! I love reading this! Let me know if you have any further questions! I am happy to help. ❤️
I made a queen size cathedral window and it was wonderful. I used a really high quality muslin and it felt so special. It did take me about 2 years.
You are so welcome! I am thrilled this video has helped! 🥰
Saw one of these as curtains in Camden, SC. If I do this it will be curtains in a window. Was beautiful.
Oh, that WOULD be beautiful! Love this idea! Thank you for sharing!

You are so very welcome! Glad it was helpful!
I watched a demo for this quilt many years ago but I never tried it because of the slow pace of making it. Maybe I can get some of these made soon. Thanks for the demo.
You are welcome! Let me know if you have any questions once you start, Deb. Happy to help you! ❤️
Cool as beans
Thank you! 😊
At 72 I don't think I'd better start one, Chris 😊.
It is never too late! 😘❤️
