Friend, know this: Augustine was the source for Calvin. Augustine believed there is no free will (same with Calvin), that Mary was an eternal virgin and she gave birth to the Catholic Church via Jesus and is the mother of the Church, and that the power of government should be used to compel conversions to Christianity and His sexual guilt led him to explore original sin. Calvin was a baby christian of 3 years when he wrote the institutes. He was trained as a lawyer in catholic cannon law. Would you hire him as your pastor? He justified the persecution of christians to the point of torture and murder. Same with Luther. Just study the scripture and learn what the New Covenant is really about. Romans 8:9

Within the first week of me reading this book, it turned me around on my thoughts on the Bible, Jesus and God. Shortly after that I developed a strong urge to learn Koine Greek so I can read the New Testament in its original language. So, I'm working on that now. That urge felt like I was being pulled to learn Greek as if there was a rope in my heart pulling me. I actually felt the sensation in my heart when being pulled (guided) to learn Greek. Once I started my Greek lessons, that pull stopped. This book I give credit for clearing up some of my confusion and leading me back to God. Thank you John Piper for writing this book!!

The old shepherd John Piper.... has been used and still being used by the HOLY SPIRIT in his teachings and in his wisdom to carve in my soul to the image of CHRIST...
I so love the way Pastor John thinks and "feels" and teaches and understands the Bible... when I watch him here I can almost forget the political things he has said (e.g. celebrating with tears of happiness the election of Barak Obama... visceral contempt for Donald Trump.... seeming to give some people an excuse for the bitterness and envy they harbor against other people)........ I wish Pastor John will never say another word about politics or social justice, etc.... but just preach the pure word of God and the Gospel of Christ's Kingdom like John MacArthur does. I hope that is what his new book is about.
i probably dont have the patience to plod through a 700 page book, but the Sovereignty of God is my favorite topic and thought. The older I get, the more convinced of my Creator God's sovereignty. I go further than most - God did not need my permission nor free will to Create me, nor did He need my permission nor free will to Save me, nor does He need my permission to determine the date, time and place of my death, which He has already done. What helped my understanding of God's sovereignty was reading in Luke 1:15, how God saved John while still in his mom's womb, BEFORE he was born! John did not and could not, have exercised his own free will to be saved and be filled with the Holy Ghost - it was all God's sovereign election and predestination that did it. Also when reading of Saul/Paul's conversion while on the road, is another example of God sovereignly saving someone without their free will and approval. Finally, my own conversion was done without my free will and approval! This is the epitome of a Sovereign God to me - complete agency to do as He WILLS as noted in Matt. 6:10, Dan. 4:17, 35. I'm so glad God never needed my free will to create me, nor save me, nor determine when I die and that I will be instantly raptured into His presence in Heaven. Yes it is true that God is sovereign over all of me, and I exercise my free will within the confines of His much larger Sovereignty, Omniscience, Omnipotence, Omnipresence, etc. In my view, this is the perfect place to be, and Ive never been happier!
Incredible, what an amazing interview! Brilliant, god bless you so much. I read half of the book (providence) so far, and I actually feel that these 700 pages will be too little
40:40 God uses Satan to sanctify us Christians. This is unfailing assurance that even any evil will be used for God purpose to love us, purify us and save us from present corruption so that we can enjoy His glory now and even survive our bodily deaths into eternal life with Him. This is so glorious!

John Piper is a very easy brother to love -- a genuine Christian spirit of grace and love. Relative to questions of "free will" vs. God's sovereignty -- it is necessary to recognize that, in the Cross, God has entirely removed the "old man", and has replaced that old man with a new creation. In the power of this new creation there is a sinless estate -- accomplished through new birth and the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. This is seen in 1 John 3:9: "Whoever has been begotten of God does not practise sin, because his seed abides in him, and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God". Thus, the (free) will of the "old man" is replaced with a nature that is to be governed by God. Of course, as is said in Psalm 32, we are not to be as horse or mule to be directed as by a bit and bridle; however, we are to be regulated by God.
Firstly, the defintion of free will is not "I do what I want." That's active or conscious will which we DO HAVE. Free will means that ultimately you and no one else controls or influences the desires and intents of the hearts, which we don't have because before new birth by the power of the Holy Spirit no one is free to desire to love and obey God because we are self-centered and bitter against God's truth and agenda from conception because of our sin nature according to Romans 5-7. When we are born again our will is still not free, THANK GOD, because the Holy Spirit inside us influences us to love and desire to obey God regardless of what we suffer or lack and we cannot be as rebellious and bitter against God like we were previously because his love is too strong upon our hearts and our faith and hope are too deep-seated to turn away and never come back to him. So we are able to use our wills to make decisions, to an extent and only based on what God has predetermined for us to choose, but we are never totally free to decide the direction or objects of our will at any moment. We're either the devil's slaves or God's when we will to do things and we can't switch back and forth nor decide freely to stop being the devil's slave and start being God's, which is why the new birth is necessary for repentance and faith to take place and we can't choose when and if the Holy Spirit makes us born again. Ultimate control and rights to everything that happens is what God's sovereignty means. The "GRAND HOW" discussion at around 22:28 isn't crucial in our embrace and worship but it does matter for helping clear away some confusion and further soften our hearts in humility. God is sovereign over our wills and destiny yet we are still accountable for what we do because: 1. God's prerogative in planning sin doesn't mean his approval in it happening. - It's not sinful for God to plan sin since he has a good purpose in it ultimately as well as the full right to have things end up the way he intends, but it is sinful to actually want to sin and then do it. 2. God uses secondary causes and agents to bring about his ultimate will so that he doesn't have to actively make certain things happen to ensure his intentions - God's planning sin doesn't mean he gets into people's hearts and hands to do the sin as if we are morally neutral or unconsciously being moved around like puppets or robots. Instead, we all want to sin by default and the devil influences us through temptations based on our ungodly desires so that while God intends sin for a ultimately good outcome we don't, so we are guilty. 3. God's sovereignty toward a ultimate, all-comprehensive goal doesn't cancel out his responsibility to judge individual people and actions - For God to be just he has to punish sin and reward good behavior regardless of the motive behind it and who influenced the decision but didn't themselves carry it out for the person being judged. So for me to say God doesn't have the right to judge me for fornication because he planned it and even saved my child that resulted in that act, for instance, would be to demand that he focus only on the good which he did not me and ignore all the evil intentions and pain that I caused in the bad, which is partiality and contrary to justice. 4. God's sovereignty alone enables and prevents repentance and faith which is his full prerogative - Even at the time of the final judgment, for a person who's not born again to hear about God's sovereignty over their life it won't being about remorse or a desire for them to right their wrongs or to have done anything differently to honor God, which is appropriate and evidences of repentance and faith. Instead, they would just further hate and blame God and not acknowledge that they desired to sin and never truly loved or wanted to love and obey God for who he truly is, thus being deserving and in full agreement of the fate they receive. You can both acknowledge that you did something wrong and rightfully regret your acts and intentions while also being grateful for God planning it and doing something ultimately good with it, but people who are not born again will only justify the wrong that they did and blame God for how he ruled the world and put them in the position to make the decisions that they made which is a grossly wrong and damnable attitude that true repentance and faith will not allow.
May I ask a sincere question..... There are other books on God's Providence, e.g. The "Mystery of Providence" by John Flavel, "Crook in the Lot" by Thomas Boston, and "Divine Providence" by Stephen Charnock.... What does Pastor John's book add to an understanding of God's Providence that these books lack? Thank you.
Free will is never free.. every decision costs you something.. asset or liability.. I think it was Johnathan Edwards who wrote the only "free will" is when we so desire the Creator we are totally consumed by the desire
When we stand before God, we will then know that belief in free will (independence from God's voice), was the original lie man told himself. (John 12:48)
@Randal R Perhaps I should not have used the word stand. I was suggesting that most believers, when they actually meet God, will be amazed that works righteousness was so strongly embraced in the church.
@@GraceSpunge Good. I just wished Calvinists were more explicit than they currently are. They know that men believe the lie of freewill because God predetermined them to, and there's nothing men can do about it. Yet Calvinists speak as though men could have believed otherwise.
So funny, my own personal experience was God was totally in control at my moment of conversion. Even my first prayer before I actually started studying the bible, the things I was saying and asking for were what the bible says our Christian lives are about. If I genuinely did not have this knowledge where did that come from? It's not magic God did it.
The how??? a) God knows what breaks every hearts b) God decides to break a heart c) God put that heart in that position d) when in that position, the heart decides to follow God.
Incomplete. You forgot 2 steps that precede what you′ve listed: 1) God creates haughty hearts through secondary means. 2) God decrees what breaks every heart. Also in the last one, you said "the heart decides..." No, God decides! Remember, there's no freewill.
@@gk.4102 I disagree. Your decides, but God put you in a position where you have only one choice. Thats is His mercy. If you were not in that position, you would not chose God. But, if you see this in a broader perspective, you did not ask God to corner you, so in that sense, God decided to trap you in deciding Him. It glorifies God since it shows many of His attributes. So the question remains, is there any freewill when God put you in a position where you have one way to go? Nobody can resist His love.
@@Alejandro_Figueroa " God put you in a position where you have only one choice." No. A choice implies options, but there are none here. The formula is simple: God decides, your body executes.
I thought the same thing. I thought he did a poor job of putting the focus on Piper sharing about the book. He even sounds impatient at many points with Piper, almost rushing him to finish so he can teach him how to answer the question.

“As saints of old still line the way, Retelling triumphs of his grace, We hear their calls and hunger for the day, when with Christ we stand in glory” Soon he’ll be joining their great cloud of witnesses. And what a grand example he’s leaving behind 🥲☺️
I'll most likely read it but I am going to be so SO careful in doing so because a Calvanistic understanding of sovereignty and Providence is going to be littered with misunderstanding of scripture and from that some none biblical ideas that stem from them. I'm 100% positive it will be have so much rich and fruitful truths and teaching. But from the guy who says God puts the will of rape into the heart of a man and decrees him to do it, I'm expecting a few forms of inconsistency. I know none the less that God will use this book to aid his kingdom and it comes from a heart for God but I also know that we are still fallible as man including John Piper. In case you cannot tell I am not a Calvanist let alone 5 point Calvanist.

Used to be Arminian. When God allowed me to be stricken with cancer and then used it to save my wife and bring us together, my eyes were finally opened as to what Romans 9 and God's Providence is all about. Took that much. What can I say I am a stubborn cuss.
What an excellent host! He leads the interview really well. And of course awesome to have John Piper talk about the book!
I’m buying this book! I so love Dr. Piper.
Thanks you for listening and God bless you Mrs. I really appreciate your efforts and concerns towards us .you can always reach me personal on my official number , God bless you
Me too!
The old shepherd John Piper.... has been used and still being used by the HOLY SPIRIT in his teachings and in his wisdom to carve in my soul to the image of CHRIST...
The LORD uses Piper MIGHTILY!!
Just started reading it, it’s very good
Push through the moments of impossibility.....start writing...the Lord will give you insight.
Praise the Lord Jesus!😇
i watched all of it! best interview ever! learned so much!
John I have just finished the book on providence
i probably dont have the patience to plod through a 700 page book, but the Sovereignty of God is my favorite topic and thought.
This interview is so good. Thank you

I love to read this Book !
I love John, but my goodness, even his video interviews have chapters!
That camera angle from the thumbnail is beautiful. 👌🏼🔥
Just started reading, wanted to wait after my finals, but i cant!!! Reading it in between studying
Great interview, more videos like these please :)
I believe we need to take our hearts to the Son, Jesus The Christ. HE is our savior. HE is our mediator to the Father.
"I will" have to rewatch this video
I got this book too. Some of the pages, though, are a little blurry, I mean the words on the pages are blurry, most pages are clear, though. I’m going to buy it on Kindle, anyway
Amazing

Hi, does anyone know how to order this book from where I’m from? I’ve checked the link in the description. Apparently, international shipping isn’t an option. It’s only available in the us and Canada and I’m from the Philippines.
Hello Ja, maybe go to their website and contact them. Maybe they can help you.
@@semper_reformanda_1517 I’ll do that. Thank you Jonas
Bro, look up Coram Deo Books in fb, or Paulo's Library if you're from the south.

Can anyone give a good analogy of God’s providence?
Will there be an audible book (preferably read by John Piper) available?
A book with that many pages would take 15-20 hours of audible time.
God is sovereign over our wills and destiny yet we are still accountable for what we do because:
How do you not buy the book after watching this
Haha! That's exactly what I did! Tight budget these days (right?) but sometimes value is more than $.
Thank you.
Great Christian :)

Don′t you mean to say that belief in free will was the original lie that God ordained man to tell himself?
@@gk.4102 (Acts 17:28) YES
@@GraceSpunge Good. I just wished Calvinists were more explicit than they currently are. They know that men believe the lie of freewill because God predetermined them to, and there's nothing men can do about it. Yet Calvinists speak as though men could have believed otherwise.
@@gk.4102 I'm not ashamed of being a robot for God, happily plugged in to His Spirit, through His Word. (Gal 3:5, Romans 10:17)
So funny, my own personal experience was God was totally in control at my moment of conversion. Even my first prayer before I actually started studying the bible, the things I was saying and asking for were what the bible says our Christian lives are about. If I genuinely did not have this knowledge where did that come from? It's not magic God did it.
The how???
a) God knows what breaks every hearts
b) God decides to break a heart
c) God put that heart in that position
d) when in that position, the heart decides to follow God.
Incomplete. You forgot 2 steps that precede what you′ve listed:
1) God creates haughty hearts through secondary means.
@@Alejandro_Figueroa " God put you in a position where you have only one choice."
No. A choice implies options, but there are none here. The formula is simple: God decides, your body executes.
Why does the interviewer keep following up with comments where he sounds like he is trying to teach Piper lol
I thought the same thing. I thought he did a poor job of putting the focus on Piper sharing about the book. He even sounds impatient at many points with Piper, almost rushing him to finish so he can teach him how to answer the question.
Feels like it would have worked better to have had Tony interviewing him.
Maybe that was just near the beginning...the interview seems to have really gotten on track and much better as it went along.
@@scatoutdebutter it was good overall. I certainly plan to get the book when it's eventually released over here or if I can get it shipped from America.

“As saints of old still line the way,
Retelling triumphs of his grace,

Semi-Pelagianism bro...it's not the way. It's God's story, not ours, it's HIStory and He alone is the Author and Finisher of our faith (Heb.12:2).
@@DuP2211 Yet you believe that God ordained him to say it.
Ecclesiastes 12:12 be warned: the writing of many books is endless. Good Lord save us from the endless books of the reformed church. God will watch over his word but will not watch over the words of man. Jeremiah 1:4. Piper, first get to know Jesus and then speak. His book is a rehash of Augustine and Calvin. Sad.

Jesus looked after the poor, injustices, sick, women and children……todays pastors ‘write and sell books, and more books’….and speak about their books…and at conferences…and others just idolize them. And make good livings. Not impressed. THE Bible has the info we need.
This guy can’t remember the age when Jonathan Edwards died, but can remember the years of his birth and death. 🤣
Wouldn't it be nice to start by providing evidence for your particular God exists first. If there is a God it certainly isn't the Cristian God.

@@sandiebarrios25 ...just not the reprobates.
This interview is rife with whiteness. Jesus in Luke's Gospel at least had a fecund imagination. There is no imagination here.
John Piper let his family rot while he went to chase fame. Ask his atheist son . Very sad that God gave him his family but he chose to chase fame under the guise of evangelism .
His atheist son is not a robot (just copying instructions from his father) but rather also has free will to accept, question or dismiss the Gospel.
