      The camera software does it. He takes a number of shots. The camera adjusts focus in tiny increments. Then the software blends the many shots together keying on the many focus points. I believe he is doing this in camera with a new model. … One can also do this back at home at the desktop with software.

    • @earthknight60
      @earthknight60 4 місяці тому

      Most likely using "focus bracketing". Some newer cameras have a setting that automatically adjusts the focus by small increments. Not many right now have it purely internal to the camera, for most it's still an external function often run by a PC.

      @RonaldPlett 4 місяці тому +2

      His lens doesn't have autofocus and he changes focus by moving the camera closer while shooting burst mode. I use an a7rii. Very slow burst so I can't really do it well but I have gotten some incredible macro shots this way. Then after that it's got to be stack in photoshop. That has many tutorials on UA-cam. Just search for photo stacking in photoshop.

    • @earthknight60
      @earthknight60 4 місяці тому

      @@RonaldPlett The issue with moving the camera like that is that as you move it you wind up with slightly different perspectives and a slightly different field of view.. I've done that too (with my old Nikon D600, my a7II, my a7III, and my a6500), but the results are extremely variable.

    I'm so impressed that you are getting hand held stacks with the Laowa 25mm. I rarely take mine out in the field because it's so hard to hand hold and usually use it inside on the rail. You've inspired me to have another go with it once we start getting into spring.

    It's so great to see someone doing more "in the field" videos as opposed to endless lens reviews at a desk. Your videos are so much more motivating to get out and shoot.
    It would be cool to hear about your settings sometimes magnification level, aperture. Especially with things like slime molds and springtails. I had that laowa lens with my R6, but got rid of it when I went to om system. So now I find myself trying to create those magnification levels with a raynox and/or telconverter.
    Thanks for the videos!

    You mentioned the side lighting from your diffuser when shooting verticals. This seems to trouble very few people but it has caused me to try several designs for homemade diffusers that work equally well for verticals and horizontals. All have been failures to some degree even if a bit better than the standard diffuser type. I guess there is no market for this and many willing to buy those hoods. Good video.

    Please forgive my ignorance, as I know nothing at all about the Fuji system. How are you able to use a Nikon flash with a Fuji camera?
    Also, I notice in some images you've used very high numbers of stacked images - are they really necessary to get the DoF or is there another reason for the high quantities of shots?
    Finally, I currently use a Nikon Z50 and I've been looking for a camera that can do automated focus bracketing. I've tried two OM-1s and returned both because of what I now believe to be a fundamental flaw in the C-AF focusing. Until seeing your video, I wasn't aware that any Fuji cameras included focus stacking or bracketing. How do you have that working with a non-AF Laowa lens? EDIT - watched part 2 and now know that you are doing the stacks by moving the camera 😎
    Sorry, lots of questions 😊

    Curious why most of your shots are at f4? It seems maybe less frames would be needed at a much higher f8, f11, or more.
    Is this due to limitations on your flash exposure settings?
    Also curious what stackign software you've chosen.
    Beautiful work!

    • @ZeLoShady
      @ZeLoShady 6 місяців тому +1

      It would be due to diffraction. At high magnification it will set it soon. F4 is most likely the sharpest setting. Plus, when you are this close, the difference isn't all that useful, you are going to need a lot of shots regardless.

    • @naturefold
      @naturefold  6 місяців тому +4

      I mostly stack at f4 since that is the sharpest aperture on the laowa 25mm, any higher and diffraction starts to kick in and I lose a lot of detail. At higher magnifications like 4x or 5x I usually stack at f/2.8 since at those magnifications there's quite a bit of diffraction even at f/4. I use zerene stacker for processing stacks.

      @naturefold awesome. Good to know. I do all my macro work (more like extreme close ups of flowers, etc) painfully with extension tubes and don't have the same diffraction issues... but can't get nearly that magnification either. Thanks for the response!
