Today we're making the Bourbon Renewal! This is a quick, easy drink recipe that's perfect for the colder weather (but great any season!). Considered a modern classic, the Bourbon Renewal was created roughly 20 years ago by Jeffrey Morgenthaler. It's a balance of bold bourbon with tart lemon, sweet black currants, and a touch of spice. For those looking for an easy intro (or reintroduction) to bourbon, this one's for you. Cheers!

Happy weekend, everybody! Who's making this one tonight? 🥃

No bourbon, guess I'm having a "last drops of Jameson renewal"
@@liamblood5239 sounds good to me!
Tonight's Scottish Seasides and Bobby Burns.
Yes! Curious to the combination with crème de cassis. Btw, awesome glass you’re using :)
ME!!! Just got the crème de chassis from the store.
It’s 11am on Black Friday, I have nothing else to do, why WOULDNT I make this right now?!
I sure can't think of a reason 🥃
An excellent breakfast drink, I agree!
'cause it's friday, you ain't got no job. And you ain't got shit to do!
You go right ahead...I fully support you !!! 👏
Nothing wrong with some daytime drinking!👍
I use unmarked dice for giving Bardic Inspiration in D&D. Pass them out to other players when you give inspiration so they don't forget they have it. Those would be super rad for the right character.
I love and appreciate the way you encourage people to change the ratios of the cocktails. To me, that’s so wholesome. ☺️
I came across this a few weeks ago and I've made it a number of times since (also with semi-rich syrup, because that's what I had available at the time). It really is wonderful and easily customizable to each palate.
I made this with Old Grandad 114 and one with Buffalo Trace and you were on the point about needing a higher proof. The Buffalo Trace for me got almost entirely lost but the Old Grandad 114 which is a bit fruity and rich for a high proof (and low cost) was perfect. A little hot but I got every flavor that went into this drink. Thanks for the fantastic recipe and video!
More whiskey based drinks please! Would love hear your recommendations on whiskeys as well.
Noted - cheers! 🥃
Agreed! Have you tried the Elks Own yet? Kinda blew my mind and now i can’t stop playing with Rye + Port / Red Wine. 👀🥃
What a delight! Thanks for keeping it light and breezy, Anders!
Holy cow! I made this for the first time two days ago and I'm in love! I only had a rye to use as I'm out of bourbon, but it was still amazing. And it gives me a way to use up the creme de cassis I picked up in France. Cheers Anders!
New to the channel and this was the first recipe I've tried that you've featured. I love this cocktail! Seems more of a warm weather drink to me but I can't stop myself from having it now, in the winter. Thanks!
This looks absolutely delicious!!
This is so crazy! I was at work yesterday and made this drink just off a random google for bourbon/cassis, then come home to see your video! Great content as always Anders!
I've been making this for about a month now - I'm glad to see it highlighted here on your wonderful channel. I subbed out the bourbon for a rye for an added spice that I think really makes this pop. Thanks for all of the inspiration!
Rye Renewal - love it 🥃
Hello Anders! My name is Anders as well. I've been following your channel for some months now, and I just wanna thank you for opening this door for me. I always thought cocktails were something you only could get at bars, but you've shown me that anyone can enjoy drinks at their home bar. I've recently been starting, and expanding my home bar, in order to serve my friends a few cocktails when they are at my place. It's a lot of fun playing around and creating these drinks for other people. It has become a new passion of mine, and I will keep watching your channel for new inspiration. I hope you will continue to make these wonderful videos. Kind regards Anders
Cheers Anders! Great name. Happy you’re exploring new cocktails at home (guessing your friends are happy too). Appreciate you following the channel. Hope these recipes keep you going - happy mixing!
One of my favourite, I used to use it as a template for improvise drinks, i made basics sours but instead of just simple syrup split the sweet with a liqueur, i made these for poeple who weren't too used to drinking spirits and they loved it
I also once or twice made it with blanton's boubon, wich a thought was too expensive of a bourbon to use in a sour, but in was so much better !
Yussss! This is my drank! So glad you did a video on it. Thank you sir! 🙏🥰
My favorite cocktail to make, and drink!
Looks like a great drink for the winter.
Just had two of these. Delightful!
Wow! I took a risk & served this at a get together today. What a hit! Thanks for introducing me to this drink.
Another delicious cocktail!
Just made, it's a winner
LUV this cocktail, and now I finally have a use for the Crème de Cassis that has been idle in my cabinet for a WHILE…
I appreciate this channel. One of my all time favorite cocktails. I really appreciate the connection/comparison to other cocktails like the Bramble. Great work!
Thanks, Eric! Cheers!
You guys have mirror image names. ERIC ANDERSon / ANDERS ERICkson. Carry on...
I've been enjoying this so much for the last couple months. Buffalo Trace works too but Wild Turkey 101 is amazing in this. I went through almost an entire bottle of Giffard Cassis Noir de Bourgogne (which by the way is an amazing liqueur) only for this drink. There's also another spec (which I found in an YT video) that Jeffrey Morgenthaler uses for this which leans sweeter with only 1.5 oz of borubon. The type of lemon you use makes a huge difference and serving it up is a nice variation but for my taste the spec in this video, served on a big rock is the way to go.
This has slowly turned into a personal favorite of mine by now… thank you Anders! Cheers!🥃
Hey Anders, this is an excellent cocktail!! I was actually wondering what to do with my Creme de Mûre which I had left from the Bramble so i used this one instead of Cassis. also pumped up the whiskey to 70ml and went a bit less on the Mûre (10ml) because i thought the Bramble tasted a bit too much like a popcicle.
Fantastic drink!
I really enjoy your weekly recipes! Keep them coming!
Ooh! One of favorites!
Great drink. I found it a few years ago when looking for more uses for our Cassis. Yum!
Made this drink just after I finished work. Definitely gonna make thus regularly...
I make this drink all the time at home for myself. Never knew it had a name lol
Making this tonight!
Happy weekend as well... renewal of bourbon... what a title.
WOW...Tis' the Season
This looks delicious I’m definitely making one tonight.
As always, great video! For those of us who are aspiring to make our own recipes, I’d love to see a video on some techniques you brushed on at the end about balancing cocktails.
That's a great video idea...
WOOZERS just made this one for New Years Eve. MMMM you are correct it’s YUMMY Thanks for the great recipe
Oh I think this would be amazing.
I rarely comment, but I just had to commend the way you articulated about how to tweak variations on this recipe. I'm very inspired, especially to try it with the Angel's Envy bourbon I just treated myself to. I think the cassis will work much with that port cask. Thanks Anders!
I bet you're right about that port cask 👍 Cheers!
TO THE BAR! 🥃
Finally! A drink I can make with things on hand!
Excellent - enjoy it!
Excellent cocktail. Loved the semi-rich simple syrup tip! Did it with Bullet Bourbon, a low-budget cassis liqueur, and lime (reduced to half oz). Big fan of your channel! Cheers
Very tasty! I find it more as whisky sour, but with the black currant twist.
Excellent
Hey Anders, congrats on insider article about gin. Just saw it there the other day and decided to get myself a Plymouth bottle.
I love the nerdy side trip! I’m not drinking for a while but I still love your channel. I just bought 3 different non-alcoholic gins…didn’t know it was a thing…we’ll see how they taste
I always look forward to your video's! I just bought Crème de Cassis for my at home bar, so this is a PERFECT cocktail to try! Thanks for sharing!
Hope you enjoy it!
Yeah ill try this tonight too. Last week's cocktail was fantastic! Huge whisky fan here, so keep those kind of cocktails coming!
Glad you liked it! Cheers!
Any day with a new creme de cassis recipe is a GOOD day
I just made it. Oh my , it is so so good. Thank you for sharing. I love you guys. You and Az. Lol
I’ll be making that tonight.
Delicious! Just made one for my husband. Wow! He loves it. I'm not normally a bourbon drinker, but this is a gateway bourbon drink! 😂❤
ANDERS!!! This is one cocktail I HAVE to try!!! This is my kind of cocktail and I want in NOW!!!! CHEERS!!!
Cheers Tim!! Such a good drink - I know you're gonna love it! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
This is delicious!
Jeffrey partnered with Ninkasi Brewing and is actually canning this cocktail now, and it's fantastic!
I’ll keep an eye out for it 👍
Happy Holidays, Anders & Az.
Love the quick, simple, and classic vids -- Especially when it features Whisky; Or Whiskey, since it's Bourbon.
P.S. I made it to Ward Eight on a Chicago Trip last weekend. It was great! Highlight was a white negroni w/ Malort. The joint is definitely in good hands, now that you're on to a new journey.
Cheers/Salud!
Thanks, Mark! Happy to hear you made it to Chicago and had a good time at the bar. Cheers!
The Best Bartender I know!!...well i don't 'know yah'....but you know what i mean!! Cheers your Canadian Bartender!
whiskey cocktails are the best
thank u daddy anders yes!
After the rubbish football (soccer) just now I need something to perk me up. This looks perfect!
Love this drink! I’ve actually been experimenting with different base spirits. I’ve tried bourbon (obviously), gin, and cognac, but I actually landed on calvados being my favorite! I think it makes for sort of a fruit punch vibe. Would definitely recommend!
Buffalo Trace distillery is awesome
When I first sat this I said, “This is an old fashioned with lemon juice and Creme de cassis.” Gonna have to try this. Still waiting for the White Russian video.
Love your channel and your drink recipes. I really wanted to try this drink, but, unfortunately could not find creme de cassis near me. However, it turns out I had a bottle of Chambord, and tried it with that. Wow, what a revelation. Excellent drink. I also used Meyer lemons (which is what I had at the time). I highly recommend them as they are mellow and sweet and easy drinking. I call it the Bourbon Renaissance (patent pending). Try it if you have the chance. I am sure you will enjoy it. Thanks for the channel!
This was so good I forgot to comment last week. Only now when I made it again did I realize my mistake.
This screams for a Bottled In Bond Whiskey. Evan Williams BIB, White Lable.... Tried it, and IT IS AMAZING!!!!! Cheers, AND, you are very welcome... 🙂
Anders this is so good mate x
Just made this but had to use a blackcurrant liquor as a substitute. I have to say it tasted like a throat lozenge. I kinda liked it.
Awesome - gonna have one with my gumbo tonight! To the Bar!
Gumbo sounds amazing right about now. Enjoy it, Marc! Cheers!
Hey Anders! Can't wait to make this drink tonight, keep up the good work. Had a suggestion! Like the beginning of this video you could add a closing line where you say something like "And while you're enjoying this drink, why don't you watch blah blah blah next" (and link to something in a similar that youve made in the past).
Thanks Anders! You continue to rock and this looks delicious. Got the 100 proof Evan but will try with the BT. Happy Thanksgiving.
Can't go wrong - love the Evan White Label too!
Whiskey cocktail watching world cup, why not?
Awesome freaking video my friend! I need to watch more content! You just got another subscriber my friend!
Any excuse I have to pull out the Crème de Cassis, I'm all for. Probably my favorite modifier.
Please do a Junglebird!! Fav drink ever
Ah yes, now I have a reason to get some creme de cassis! Cheers Anders!
Cheers Sean!
These are fantastic and a staple at our house. A variation worth considering is to serve over crushed ice and they also work well with Cardamom bitters. Cheers!
Ooh love the cardamom bitters idea. Cheers, Gary!
What brand of cardamom bitters do you like?
@@AndersErickson What brand of cardamom bitters do you recommend?
I love this drink. I use a little different proportions (little less lemon and a little more bourbon- something higher proof).
Drinking my first one now, thinking less lemon myself. And the 120 proof seems on the money for this drink.
@@boyfromoz7 I go down to 3/4 oz lemon and 3/4 oz cassis and bump up the bourbon in proof (anything 100 and over - WT 101 is my basic starting point) and adjust amount up if needed from there. Now to find some lemons for tonight!
I’ll be giving that one a go, cheers Anders 🥃
Hope you enjoy it - Cheers!
Also, singling out any of Morgenthaler's recipes as most popular one is rather hard. I knew his eggnogs recipes and Amaretto sour, but never heard of Bourbon revival.
Definitely going to try this one! Might do Demerara syrup instead though. Big fan of the channel, I’ve learned a lot from you, thank you 💪🏽 keep making greatness!
Thanks, Manuel! Hope you enjoy the drink - Cheers!
❤❤❤❤
Happy, Jappy, Joy, Joy. Another Anders Erickson cocktail and I have all the ingredients!!!
Cheers, Robert!
@@AndersErickson Dayum, what an amazing cocktail! Last nights was with Wolford Reserve, and tonight's will be with Sonoma Cherrywood Burbon.
Great video anders hope you enjoyed your thanksgiving and your wife also didn’t want to leave her out
Thanks Duane - hope you had a great Thanksgiving as well!
Hi Anders. I always look forward to your Friday videos! How long can you keep crème de cassis or crème de mûre?
I think you just made what is about to become my new favorite cocktail (sorry paper plane😅)… trying this tonight!
I won't tell the Paper Plane 🤐
Daamnn ... someone who does not wear a watch , you certainly make me want one.
There's definitely a spark between you and your dog 😍🙃
Man, beautiful intro!
awesome cocktail - try amarena cherry garnish
I used Chambord, and it was super. Didn't have Cream of casis available.
I have 2 silicone trays for making ice cubes,
I have a reverse osmosis filter for making pure water,
Yet I have only one ice left because I was lazy every evening of the last 10 days and did NOT fill the trays for having enough ice at hand.
Noooo! Talk about a buzz-kill. Better get to it!
Loving the music. Need more puppy.
I see you used Buffalo Trace. That's one of my favorites! Although I'm also jealous, because I haven't been able to find any where I live for a while.
Nico one Anders !
I made this, don’t know if I messed up but found it too tart, I’d back off the lemon or up the simple syrup.
General request. Are you able to do a video on all the different bitters available (well not all) and maybe mention the cocktails that use them. I picked up Dillion's orange bitter recently and am really enjoying them.
Just what the doctor ordered 😊
I haven’t tried it with cassis (as I don’t have any), and so I guess I haven’t technically tried this drink..
But I used Chambord (raspberry) instead, and it’s delicious!
If I make a cocktail successfully substituting one ingredient for another, does that constitute me inventing a new cocktail?
In which case I’d like to introduce the
“Bourbon Re-Blue-al”.
Just made one and drinking it now..... not bad. using 120 proof bourbon (think higher proof is a must to cut through lemon and sweetness) and all I could find was Hiram Walker Crème de Cassis (which seems of dubious quality). Went for the half oz of simple syrup. IMO it feels a little overpowered by the 1oz of lemon (freshly squeezed meyer lemons which are generally sweeter). Feels a little too sour though all the recipes I see call for 1oz. Maybe it's a me thing. Maybe try it with 1/2 oz of lemon? Not sure it taking over from Old Fashions as yet.
This was GOOD. Always have been impressed by your recipes, but this has been a hit this evening. Glad I braces the crowds to get the ingredients today, absolutely worth it!
