  • I recently installed a mini food forest or a "food grove" in the front yard of my current dwelling in Kauai. Using permaculture principals, I planted a dense amount of support species to protect and feed my fruit trees. Why be a slave to a lawn, when you can be a steward to a food grove.

Definitely want to see this food grove maturing. It's awesome that you can garden year-round too.

Hey! im your IG friend, ursealove. anyway, I wanted to suggest vetiver grass. Are you familiar with it? Im pretty into it and would recommend it as a moisture retainer and mulch source. It works kinda like the hugulkulture method because its got such dense deep roots. Great to have around during the dry season, as it will hold on to water for a long time. Loved the progression in the video, super fun to see it develop. Peace!

Hey ! Thank you so much for the info. I have been around vetiver and played with it a little, I never thought about it in a hugul water holder kinda way. The 2nd grove I planted I did planted it around the garden to use as a mulch/wind brake. Its such a neat plant. I have so many more videos, I'll post soon.

RobCruz Awesome.... it is super neat, so many ways to utilize it. Ive also seen examples of people planting donut like rings around new trees for the same moisture retention reason, then when the tree starts making shade the vetiver will die back, making room for your other guild species. I'll check back for new vids. :)
