One thing I've done that helps is a utility cart on wheels. It has three tiers. I keep everything I need in reach and not constantly looking around to see where I left something.

I like to do a mini water change with a piece of air tube into my dollar store water can every couple days. Water some plants. Two birds one stone! BTW I am so lazy I bought two python so I wouldn’t have to drag one up from the basement to do water changes in the 4 tanks on the main floor!

There's just something that's so relaxing about maintaining little tanks! I'm like you I like that the supplies are smaller and that's a great tip to always keep them handy, especially in some kind of cute little container ♥️
After maintaining a big fish room, all those years ago, it was such a chore at times. But a little "Nano Nook" that I can piddle around in everyday, especially when all the plants get growing can be such a beautiful addition to your living space 😍
I find that I don't have to "get ready" to do maintenance , thinking about what I'm going to do first and then making the time to get the tasks done!!
I like the fact that I could be sitting here and see something that needs to be done in them and just be able to jump up and do it. I love my shrimp net for catching debris and duckweed. Even water changes can take just a matter of minutes with the turkey baster or I can just dip out a little plastic cup or my paint pitcher(one of your great dollar store finds)
Do a quick water change and I'm back to enjoying the day and chasing grandbabies 🤣🥰
Thanks Joanna for always hanging out with us and chatting about neat ways to enjoy our hobby!! Have a wonderful day my friend! 🙏🌿🐟🦐💚

Love having stuff when needed. Joanna needs a fisherman’s vest with many pockets.
When I was a resident in a large NYC hospital, the residents would send a “scout” to each department to “obtain” “essentials.” Everyone would meet up to stuff the vests for the next ER shift.
Would it not be good if Joanna’s household stuffed her go to item. What a nice early way to show thanks in Thanksgiving spirit. 😉

The best way for removing duckweed I've found is getting a cup and lowering it into the tank upright, so it slurps the duckweed off the top. If the tank is small enough you're removing significant water volume this way, you can just pour the cup through a net and go again. Best part of this method is that it makes the duckweed go to the cup, vs you having to chase it around the tank!

    • @thesmallscape

    • @joewwilliams
      @joewwilliams 3 роки тому +3

@@briandotson8028 I've used a comb, for me the cup works better. Surface tension means the teeth of the comb sometimes push the water around which means I have to chase the duckweed around the tank. Forget that noise 😆 Dip the cup and the duckweed comes to you!

I am not a fan of plastic sponges, for cleaning or filtering. Whenever I've used them for regular cleaning I've noticed that they keep leaving behind lots of microplastic. Not a fan of that, not in an aquarium, not elsewhere either. Microplastic sucks.

I need to just binge all your vids, you're officially my plant sensei! I wasn't sure if I should 'prune', as you say (Love that), my amazon frogbit or let it cover everything. I just cleared out maybe 50% of them in my first beginner tank and the rest of the tank has been looking great and growing fast since then. And I've already had maybe a quarter re-grow. My new gourami centerpiece fish has been nibbling the long roots too, which is great. I used to only take out the melting and yellow ones but I think I can be a LOT more judicious with them now! Between that last experience on my own and now watching this.
I left my shrimp tank's amazon Frogbit tendrils get so long that, when I cleaned them up yesterday, about 4 of them had taken root in my substrate in a 5.5 gal! I'm almost curious what they'd do next after that, but it's too messy for the shrimp to swim on half the tank so I just trimmed it all and will continue to do so. Hoping that the frogbit regrowing after a trim will also help to out-compete the minor hair algae issue in there.
    Anyway, awesome video!

I keep towel racks in my fish room so I can wipe tanks down after working on them. The only surface floating plant I let grow in my tanks are Frog Bit. No duckweed period. That is always a fight, but every little bit goes into the freezer and I use it for making shrimp food. Those are two things I do on top of your list. Thank you!

Love your videos 👍👍 please continue to level with us also lazy people 😜 🙂 have a great day.
So what do you do with all your excess floating plants?? I feed mine to my koi in my pond.. the eat all the duck weed and frogbit I give them even in winter through a small hole I keep up with an air stone. Some times that even freezes but they still get air exchange because it makes a giant air bubble under the ice, but eventually the air stone opens the hole back up.

I LOVE microfiber cloths made for cleaning cars. They absorb so much water when you're cleaning tanks. I literally have one in my hand or on my shoulder the entire time I'm cleaning my tanks. They are my go to tank towels! I just toss them in the wash with a little bit of vinegar.

The best thing I've ever found to clean aquarium glass is the magic erasers(melamine sponges). I get packs from Amazon and cut them down. They even take off the dreaded green spot algae, so no blade required. I like that they actually absorb any algae that you're taking off the glass so any dust algae that's on their stays in the sponge.

@@thesmallscape It could be the flow. I tried red root in my goldfish tank that has two filters and an airstone. I transferred it to another tank that has higher quality led lights, but that has high flow in it too. It's almost completely gone. I'm trying Amazon frogbit in the goldfish tank, but it isn't propagating at all.

My nano tanks tend to be set up in places I'm frequently next to or in. The end stand next to the couch on the end I sit on, the kitchen counter, the bar divinding the kitchen from the living room, and yes one in the bathroom. So I see all of them several times a day and night and when I see something that is off or bothers me like a single piece of moss that's too long I just reach in and pluck it off. New plant floated up, reach in replant and put a few pebbles around it. Too many ramshorns, save the prettiest, put the rest in the assassin snail tank. Roots need trimmed, get the scissors out of the drawer under the living room tank, Snip Snip, done.
I really like my nano tanks and where they're set up. I enjoy them so much more because I'm always seeing them and seeing what's going on in them. I am still in awe and in love with your little paint bucket trick. It's a game changer. Love all the things you share with us that make fish life so much easier.

The thing that must be kept easily accessible near my tanks is my long handled tweezers. For replanting uprooted plants, yes. But also for plucking out dead leaves. And for tong feeding individual blood worms or brine shrimp to my bettas, or grabbing larger clumps to feed a tank of hungry guppies. For flipping over nerites that have fallen off the glass and landed on their back. For (carefully) holding epiphyte plants in place against a rock while superglue sets. Etc etc etc. If I'm going into the tank, chances are my tweezers are involved!

When I 1st got my Blue Diamond shrimp, they were so tiny, that's what they did 4 a couple weeks & I would have to b so careful when scooping out the tiny Duckweed. I had 1 that actually jumped. But now, I'm thinking of getting a some horned Nerites snails, b/c I learned they r better @ algae control.
