When Judy won the audition to be in The Wizard of Oz, there was no TV, no internet and if your town had a radio station, it only functioned a few hours a day. So, what did people do with their free time? Learned to play piano (or another instrument), learned to sing and practiced, practiced and practiced, and finally, learned to dance. People going to auditions in the 30's, 40's and 50's were triple threats. If they weren't talented, at the very least, they were well rehearsed-and that was enough to get a part in the chorus and/or dance troupe. Today, in the US, we're lame by comparison to Japan, where girls start early (3-5 years old) to do what Americans used to do (practice, practice, practice), in the hopes of getting into a group like BABYMETAL or AKB48. If you can spare the time, and have never seen AKB live in concert, check out the vids here on YT. This is what American dance shows USED TO look like here.

As always Pope .. you have reminded me of the way it was in the 'before time' when you proved your worth. Great comment. Wizard of Oz, & Judy Garland are in a class all their own.

This performance brings tears to my eyes. I know she had a life filled with highs and lows, and this shows one of her many, many triumphs! Her voice, the expressions on her face...she never gave less than full measure. There have been many great singers/performers before and since Judy Garland, but there was never anyone better.

The genius of Garland can never be underestimated. A life that was born to burn brightly, but briefly. She was truly a child prodigy. I am a proud part of the cult of Garland. I've been loving and studying everything about this woman since I was eleven or twelve years old. I've read every book. I guess you could say I'm obsessed with her.. I guess it's because you don't see talent like that. When she was on a live stage she had some kind of mystical electricity that would just blast an audience. She could sing, dance, act and was a gifted comedian. Her music has truly inspired me and kept me alive through turbulent years. They're truly never will be another Judy Garland again. All female singers of today owe her a great debt. She was the first female to win a Grammy award.. and, of course her legendary concert at Carnegie Hall which was the greatest night in show Business history. Her resilience through so much drama, and pain was extraordinary. Then being able to rise up like a Phoenix made her indelible. ❤🌈🤗

The thing that is singular about Judy, making her one in a trillion, is her raw talent - that spectacular voice - meeting vaudeville n from there being meticulously groomed by the MGM machine at its zenith, surrounded by the finest musicians, songwriters, filmmakers ever, and THEN, after being their biggest box office success in their golden musical years leaving AT ONLY LIKE 24 (!!)to return to doing concerts n TV!
No one can boast such a confluence of factors

There will never be anybody like her again. In later years she was far more popular in the UK and she moved to London. She died in London and all the lights of all the West End theatres dimmed their lights in respect.

I am a huge Barbra Streisand fan, and I know how much she admired Judy. Judy was, and will always be in a class by herself. She is by far, and this is coming from Barbra’s greatest fan, the best entertainer that has ever been, singer for the gods, an incredible and natural actress, and a fantastic dancer. She lived a rough life, she was used and abused by that, forgive me lord, but that God damned MGM studio. She was a workhorse, all they cared about was give her a pill to pep her up, and work her to death. She was a gift from god.

She was personal friends with JFK and after his assassination she had to perform on her show just a couple of weeks later. Judy Garland was the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. You made my day.

Only three pop artists in the 20th century had these voices. Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand and later Whitney Houston. Classically, there was only one, who stood unrivaled- Jessy Norman. Check out her Liebestod.

@Kristin Kali she was sold to mgm pictures at 12 ( literally) . Did you ever see the godfather ? The horse in the bed , well before that scene, a child is waiting at the office with her mother. ( meant to be Judy) The book ( godfather) goes into more detail . Think casting couch. ( Harvey winestien) The studio groomed her to be a star and controlled her life for years. ( golden handcuff deal ) .
In the book. , din Vito was so disgusted he did the horse thing. .. ( they made them cut those scenes from the movie. ) . Another character is based on Frank sinatra. ( Johnny Fontaine) . They is a sub plot about Hollywood and Las Vegas. They didn't have time for in the movie. ( amazing book ) same author wrote the screenplay.

Check out The Man That Got Away, from a "born in a trunk" segment from the tv series. She sang that song twice, the later version a little rougher than the first, but the first iteration is maybe the definitive version for her, which is REALLY saying something!

This song was from the musical written in 1927, Showboat, and made into a movie several times and revived on Broadway many times. Paul Roberson from the 1936 movie has the best version. Judy was the original Dorothy Gales in the Wizard of Oz movie. You must know the history of this very special person and the abuse she took. Renee Zellweger just did a movie about the older Judy and won an Oscar. te was a Tv movie about here made around 2000. I cannot snig with conviction, but when I sang once, they convicted me of disturbing the peace lol.
