Listening to Judy is a total immersive experience: she is not just singing, but letting out these emotions deep from her soul. She physically and emotionally feels the narrative of the song. Any person who has had a breakup, and then had to rally themselves to pickup the pieces and bravely go on, will know exactly how this feels. On top of that, she has this incredible voice, and she uses it in staccato and jazz phrasing to be in total command of the song. She is a one of the most brilliant performers we have ever known.
It makes me laugh that young people have little clue to the iconic Judy Garland's career and talent other than Wizard of Oz. Great that they look back to acknowledge perhaps the 20th Century's greatest talent! Judy lives on through the generations!!
Hey great song and performance and great reaction. Judy was truly one of a kind. Could you PLEASE do a reaction to her and Liza Minnelli on Judy's TV show 🙏🙏🙏🙏 not sure you knew the great Liza Minnelli is the great Judy Garlands daughter. They sang we can make beautiful music together. So nice
She was called Miss Show Biz. Along with screen partner Mickey Rooney, she was Hollywood’s top box office draw in the early 1940s. Watch her greatest screen performances in Meet Me in St. Louis and the 1954 version of A Star is Born. Also, she’ll devastate you in a single scene in Judgement at Nuremberg.
There is NO singer right now who can FORCE your participation in her inner drama like Judy Garland could...while staying musical, classy, beautiful...she could tell when someone in the audience was resistant, and directed that POW at him until he stood applauding, not knowing why❤
Judy was one of the greatest live performer's of all time. Her career lasted over 4 decades. Most know her as, Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Judy made 29 films in 15 years for MGM alone. As the 50s came about, Judy went back to live stage singing. Thats when the cult of Garland emerged. Her voice had a cadence to it that no other singer had. It invoked so much emotion in a live audience. Her music has kept me alive. I worship her and love all of her work. I mean Judy Garland is ubiquitous because of Dorothy. She always will be. There was a sound that voice that no other singer ever had.
Judy had her own television show on the CBS during the nineteen sixty-three 1964 television season. She was offered a 24 million dollar contract, which was unheard of at the time. That is 200 million in today's dollars. That's how big of a star Judy Garland was. When she sang, she took you on an emotional ride along with her. Every song was a piece of her heart. There has never never been another one like her
Your numbers are way off. Judy's contract with CBS (for the weekly series) came after a lawsuit that Judy filed against CBS that went on for like 5 yrs. prior. Both parties dropped their suits when they offered Judy Garland Enterprises a 26 episode weekly show that guaranteed her around $140K episode of which Judy herself was guaranteed around $27K per ep (that totaled around $700K). As we all know the show was canceled after the first season. Judy reportedly LOST money and died a few years later .... still broke.
Judy didn't think her life was sad like everyone thought it was. There's a great movie about her starring Judy Davis. Her daughter Lorna Lufts was taken aback at how much she was like her mother.
Judy does kick butt. Greatest singer of our lifetime. You need to do a reaction of her singing The Man That Got Away from the 1954 film A Star Is Born.
So glad you stumbled onto this treasure. It's not the song I would have introduced you to first, but still amazing. She appeared in over 30 films and was the first superstar. She could act, dance and sing and stun audiences with her live performances. 'Zing Went the Strings of My Heart' 'The Man That Got Away' 'Old Man RIver' 'Get Happy' and on and on!
Can I recommend. Be the first channel to feature the greatest voice in....classical music. I know...but hear me out. She waa the best classical (opera 🤭) singer in the 20th-21 st century. Really. Ms Jessey Norman. Listen to Liebstod. You will blow people's minds.
JUDY! One of the few entertainers who, because of RESPECT, is known by her first name!! Please research the ones you react too. It would increase your feelings, one way or the other. Thanks love yalls honesty.
She is one of the great underrated, too often forgotten, interpreters of songs. She was like a piece of bread that was so good that you didn't need butter on it.
I appreciated your sentiment, but Judy Garland was NEVER underrated, let alone forgotten, thanks to UA-cam and her vast catalog of work. She was a superstar for her entire (albeit troubled) life.
@@snarkyenigma9219 I know what you mean, Snarky (may I be so familiar as to call you by your first name? LOL). I sort of meant AFTER she died, though, she eventually faded from consciousness and so many of the ooohs and aaaahs were transferred to people like Streisand and even Whitney Houston. I probably shouldn't have said "underrated" as much as I should have said "partly forgotten," "not rated," or "superceded." The fact that so many in subsequent generations never even heard of her indicates to me that, to at least some extent, when she died, her voice died with her. I love the fact that some of these young people doing reaction videos are discovering her.
@@timward3116 ITA ... Judy was so insanely talented and singing like this blows kids' minds. But yes its up to us to keep Judy;s legacy (and the other greats) names alive. Funny story, I was on another video thread where Streisand is singing Don't Rain on My Parade, and the clueless new generation is like, "Wow the lady from Meet the Fockers is singing Lea Michelle's song, and she's really good!". I am thinking Barbra herself is probably laughing with us. On second thought, knowing Streisand, maybe not.
@@snarkyenigma9219 If you will allow me to be a little snarky: What should we expect from a generation that too often can't read and write; too often doesn't know about the Vietnam War, the protests, the assassinations; and too often can't find its way to its own kitchens without GPS? Not that I'm blaming them, mind you. Their teachers and parents didn't teach them, for whatever reasons. Still, I have great hope for this generation. Those that aren't out killing people are out there saving people. Those that aren't dumb as bricks show amazing intelligence in other areas. Always a powerful performer whether on film or live, but her stage presence was legendarily compelling and visceral. She indeed made many more films than "The Wizard of Oz" in fact she was the leading musical female film star of the 40's with a string of hits including "Meet Me in St. Louis", "Easter Parade", "For Me and My Gal" and an Oscar nominated performance in the 1954 version of "A Star is Born". She had many songs written expressly for her including "The Man That Got Away", "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and her signature "Over the Rainbow". As someone else pointed out this clip is from her 60's television show which is a treasure trove of brilliant performances. Perhaps the most stunning of all is her powerful rendering of "Old Man River" which is A-MAZ-ING.
The focus should be Judy and her voice. So called singers don’t have this stage presence , that’s why they have so much going on behind them. Patty LaBelle talked of this on you tube.

The standing ovation was spliced into the video. It's really from Judy's first performance of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. And, is you can probably tell, this song is the last thing Judy would sing in a nightclub, as the film "Judy" had her doing.
Actually, it is not correct that this is the standing ovation from Battle Hymn, although it is understandable why you are confused. When Battle Hymn was videoed by CBS, it received a passionate ovation that, believe it or not, was not captured by the cameras. When that performance was televised, they spliced in this standing ovation from By Myself, recorded on later night. Oddly enough, in the original televised version of this performance of By Myself, the video faded out after the song, without showing the audience reaction.
@@RetroformatSilentFilms It's belated, I know, but you said "believe it or not" so I am replying not... I don't believe it. "By Myself," as passionate as the song was, and as superbly as Judy performed it, was not a standing ovation type of song unless it was done at a concert venue for Judy's rabid fans. The ones shown standing here are the staid grey suits of CBS and sponsors. "Battle Hymn" was the type of piece that could elicit a standing ovation. Also consider that CBS didn't want Judy to do "Battle Hymn" in the first place. So why would they splice in a standing ovation that was for another song? It defies common sense.
