Prior to working on Masters of the Universe, Scott Neitlich worked in other toy lines under Mattel. One of those lines was Hot Wheels, and under the Hot Wheels label you'll find the name "Spector" used twice in their products (as far as I know): one such "Spector" was a skeleton-themed car. The other Hot Wheels "Spector" came out under Mattel's very own take on the Transformers, the "Modifighters". There was a subset of smaller Modifighters, and under that subset sure enough you'll find a robot named "Spector".

The character of Spector isn't as OP as people have made him out to be.
Scott went out of his way to explain this to people and try to have that reflected in the figure.
Around his thigh is a holster with these green test tube looking widgets. Those are like fuel rods that power either his pistol or his time travel device. He has a limited number of them and when they're gone, they're gone.
So he literally would have a set number of trips he can go on, and also would have to decide between "fight or flight" as he can't use up all those rods on combat, or else how the hell would he get back home?
It's actually an intriguing part of the character and always appreciated that aspect of him.

I kind of feel a core idea of MotU Classics was to combine elements from all the previous He-Man "canons" (mini-comics, Filmation, and the 2000s reboot) into one as a toyline that celebrated all of the brand. Does that idea actually work? Debatable, as a lot of times the writing had to jump through a lot of hoops to fit seemingly contradictory things together, and invent a lot of stuff to fill the gaps. But ultimately I do respect what they set out to do.
Now, should it be "The" definitive version of the MotU? universe I don't think so. Preferring only the mini-comics or Filmation or the reboot canon and ignoring the others is just as valid, if not more so, than trying to reconsile different versions of the brand that were created largely independently from each other into a single whole. It's kind of unfortunate that MotU Classics kind of ends up being treated that way, rather than as just "a" version of the MotU universe. Not sure how much of that it Neytlich's own fault, though, because while he does a lot of videos about the lore of MotU Classics (which he wrote), he also does seem to consider MotU a multiverse that can have different equally valid versions of the universe (of which Classics is just one take).

I'm not sure why there was a need for a video over 30 minutes long talking about how much you dislike the former marketing manager of Matty Collector or how he ruined He-Man by making a figure of himself. In all seriousness, you are of course allowed to have your own opinion and have the right to express yourself, but you seem to have a lot of anger in your heart. Maybe this is the best way for you to express it. I don't know. But in the end they're just toys, whether they be for kids of collectors. They're never going to be perfect. They're made by imperfect people who we hold to incredibly high standards. We need to remember they're just people who make toys (or the decisions behind them) and are doing the best job they can.

Haha "kick his ass Johnny'!' Good video. The roast and critique is warranted, I remember many of Neitlich's lies, and the many bait-and-switch during the MOTUC line. His megalomania is shown by his post at 18:07. So according to Neitlich, the customers need to be nice (kiss the butts, and celebrate everything done) to the people behind a toyline, or else the line might get canceled?? haha.
Well if thats the mentality, its no wonder some companies lose millions, or people get ''head-hunted'' (ie fired), like an alleged firing that happened to certain brand manger at Mattel. NO-- the companies dont have the power to ''punish the customer'', in real life the customers have the power to punish a company.
Companies dont make and sell items, "as a favor" to customers... Instead they make and sell items, to make money. Companies only make products, if they believe that it would make the company profit, they dont do it as "a favor" to customers. If a company outright tells its customers to take a flying leap, then thats a company that wont be in business for long. That deluded company arrogance is the reason that many multi-billion dollar companies, are getting boycotted and sinking. Smart customers vote with their wallets, when regrading businesses. Then again I dont expect Mr. Neitlich to understand that, since he once made the claim in a podcast (around the time that he left Mattel), that he (Neitlich), "is the Jack Kirby of the toy industry"....yes he went there.

He's either forgotten what he originally wrote or is retconning in the worst ways. When in the original series and Dragon Ball Z, Goku clearly cared about people. He even destroyed the entire Red Ribbon Army just to help a friend bring his dead father back to life with the Dragon Balls.

Scott is clearly a complex character, but I can't believe that MOTU was deliberately held back from retail to suit his own empire-building ambitions. Isn't it more likely that he was a superfan who worked super hard to create a collectors' toyline and maybe took a bit too much on in the process? MOTUC was awesome, and bigger than anyone could have predicted, and like it or not, it was Scott's baby. I'd rather have had him in charge of it, than not had it at all - which is a far likelier the alternative. In the most part, I don't think people are motivated to be 'bad' - they just want things done right, which sometimes means doing them their way, and sometimes getting tunnel vision in the process. I think that was Scott. He maybe got a bit lost in it all, but we owe him a huge debt of thanks for being the force behind Origins. The Mighty Spector seems a small price to pay for EVERYTHING else that we got with that wonderful line. Did I like everything he did? No. Was I going to personally take over the line myself to do it my way? No. If I had, would fandom have thanked me for it? No. Is this enough rhetoric? Probably.

Can it be said for the TMNT crew, they don't go after older fans and try to keep things civil because they KNOW kids are watching their stuff and the last thing they want is for them to be thrown into drama. The TMNT crew also seems to, you know, like the past iterations of the series since they enjoy doing things with the 80s series as well as the comics and 90s movies. The only TWO series that haven't been brought up are the Bay films and Next Mutations which has more or less been buried by EVERYONE, the original creators included.
MOTU:R did the exact opposite, making the drama VERY public and in a way sullying any sort of goodwill that could have come to the point where the CGI cartoon, which made a lot less noise about its existence, is eventually slowly coming up as a favorite between the two even if it also does its own thing.
Back on point to the video, THIS is the very reason why I don't really *trust* people who say that they are the face of any sort of hobby, especially if they themselves appointed it TO THEMSELVES. Kevin Smith's whole 'king of the nerds' thing or whatever it was always came off as pretentious to me and after the whole MOTU debacle I felt justified in not seeing him as the hot shit that he and a lot of his clout chasing 'fans' claimed he was because like the man mentioned in the video, he only sees HIS visions as the approved ones. Sure, that's fine when you're doing your own work but Smith has worked on properties that he has not created and the whole crash landing with Revelations shows that what we saw wasn't a fan letter or whatever. It was just Smith trying to prove himself as the person to make the 'right' He-Man for this current time in the world and it was fucking terrible. I wasn't even alive when He-Man's initial popularity was high nor was I old enough to be in those groups that were playing with the toys even when they still were out but I knew all the shit he was doing was fucking wrong?
    How?
Because I actually watched the series when I had the chance to, got interested in it, watched it some more and then was bitch slapped by the same awful current writing styles I detest now being passed off as 'how to do He-Man right'? No. No it's not. It's fucking awful and when the Jeff Matsuda designed He-Man cartoon is running CIRCLES around the 'for really reals grown up for the fans' Smith version, you have a massive problem.
And the less we talk about what happened to She-Ra, the better because HOLY HELL dude....

I collected it from the beginning straight through it's time with Super7, capping it off with the release of Snake Mountain earlier this year... and it was not the easiest line to collect), I will say there are some valid points being made here.
But there are also some factual inaccuracies. For instance, the issue with Scott's face being on that palace guard figure. It was the 4 Horsemen who decided to model the face after Scott. He didn't know about it until they showed it to him. That was not his idea.
I'm not defending Scott on all fronts. His time on the brand was controversial, and some of that controversy was and is for good reason. But some of it is also blown out of proportion.

@@hinesypoomusic Yeah, that would be good. Scott actually posted a 1 minute video response on his channel offering to come onto the RetroBlasting channel and talk about all of this. I hope Michael takes him up on the offer.
Among the issues with the points made in this... Michael's video here is saying that Scott prevented these things from going to retail. Just getting MOTU Classics off the ground as a niche collector's line was difficult. This was not very long after the 200X toy line and cartoon failed to catch on with kids and was canceled, and Mattel was pretty much ready for the brand to go dormant again. They had no desire to try and bring MOTU back to retail so soon (and given it's then-recent failure at retail, there was a good chance that retailers might not have bought the figures if Mattel tried).
Scott originally conceived the online collector's line to be a continuation of the 200X figures in that same style, and was trying to pitch that to Mattel. But around the same time, the 4HM (unprompted) made a prototype He-Man figure in what became the Classics style. It was put out at Comic Con as a display piece back around 2007 if memory serves to see what fans thought of it, and it generated a lot of buzz. The short version of what happened from there was that Scott and the 4HM worked together and refocused the concept as an entirely new collectors line in that design ascetic.
Also regarding Michael's points about Ghostbusters... at the time that the MattyCollector figures came out, there was no new movies to tie the sale of them with. So traditional retail would have been risky. The figures that he refers to in this video that did eventually hit retail (which were mainly reissues of the Matty figures) came out in conjunction with the 2016 Ghostbusters movie. As bad as that film was, there was a lot of merchandise being sold at the time at retail based on the new characters/designs, as well as the classic ones. The figures based on the 2016 movie were in the same size and scale as the previous Matty figures. And since the tooling was already done, it was easy enough for Mattel to just do a wide release of the Matty figures.
Hasbro started making their figures because of Ghostbusters Afterlife. Yes, there are the Plasma figures based on the original movie that have been out for well over a year now, but that movie was supposed to come out over a year ago and got delayed due to covid.
I could go on but these are among the sorts of things that are simply not taken into consideration in this video.

I think you guys are making a lot of assumptions that you're pulling out of nowhere. With all due respect, the “multiverse” concept is also useful to get people in on the “ground floor” Look at X-Men, if the 2000 movie had say been a page per page re-make of the 1963 comic it would likely. Not have done nearly as well, if for no other reason than the lack of wolverine and other heroes people had heard of. Same with the avengers, This is the reason we see this in plenty of media. Needing a starting off point. YES it can be seen as a lazy way for writers to put their own ideas and pet theories into a story, especially as stories age and some things are harder to keep in part (Tony Stark being captured by the red Chinese, or the sheer collection of Marvel heroes/villains who got their powers from open air nuclear testing).

Wow, there are a lot of complaints about a lot of different things in this video, only some of which I think are valid. All the stuff about MattyCollector and the poor distribution of toys and all that I totally get and I'm totally on board with. But complaining about a guy making a character of himself and inserting that character into one single story, which actually only occurred in eight mini-comics that were spread over three years that didn't really have that much of an impact on the overall lore of He-Man, is a bit much. The problem with He-Man is that there's never really been one consistent story; there were the mini-comics which were different from the cartoon which was different from the Marvel imprint Star Comics, then the '87 movie to the late 80s cartoon reboot to the 200x reboot to the mini-comics from 2012 and then all the stuff that DC published over the last several years and now MOTUR and the new CGI show...it's all different enough that you can pretty much just pick which ones you like and ignore the rest. It's certainly nothing to get so worked up about.
Also, why does anyone care what this Scott guy says about whether or not this new MOTUR series is canon? He has zero to do with the show and has no more official say on it than any one of us here.

The point of noting to the extent on Spectre was that it goes to character. Everything was a mentality of "MOTU wont sell or work at mass retail" and "one man making all decisions based on his own machinations..." w the figure being a culmination of a stroke of ones own ego. Using his own opinion in higher regard despite mass opinion contradicting much of it. And that figure standing tall that he is king of the MOTU people and what he believes trumps all others. Its quite a stark indictment. And very much on the nose.

If you're trying to get the fans back on board, you kinda need to start at an established point at least and move forward from there.
Pass the baton if need be, but yeah it needs to be logical and well written.
Self insertion can't be the endgame, not everyone will follow it or even agree to it.
This dude did his thing and it didn't work out.
Self insertion is cool in your own 'verse and maybe to a few friends.
But you can't "hijack" a fandom and hold it hostage. Then when it goes off the rails and faces harsh feedback, cop out of it leaving it in a smoking wreck.
Some things fans might like, but at least take in info and ideas for serious consideration.
But I had no idea it was this big of a dumpster fire. 😅
I just counted each iteration as its own telling and left it at that.
Some of the many reboots we see are good in their own light.

I have completely ignored the existence mighty Spector. king he-man etc in a similar way to how I ignore the three SW sequels. This is an interesting video for sure. While the argument that multiverse's are lazy...there is a precedent in MOTU: because this line started with two continuities. The mini-comics and the cartoon had totally different things happening. It then evolved into a third continuity when they added aspects of the show to the mini-comics. And. let's not forget the DC comic as well. This gives writers a lot to draw from and, if handled the way Bruce Timm handled Justice League, you can cherry pick from them all to create the best possible stories.
