That’s a great point @gtdcoder. Steve has flown in several of the “teenage” fighters, including the F/A-18D (F?). He does a great job of leading the interview. Bones ☠️
Yes! We get into the FAF M2000 vs the Tornado F-3 in the next episode, which is coming out today! (02 Dec 2023) I also flew against them in the Hornet - tough fight…
Great clip! Looking forward to seeing the full interview. Bones has got a great way of telling the story, looking forward to hearing more. Sounds like he flew the Alpha Jet, too? Top Aces?
Hehe! No, not NORAD@@tonyledsham2810 . I live on Vancouver Island and years ago I heard the ol' "Sedlo, Sedlo, Sedlo delta echo Ivory Eagle" on Guard. I wasn't sure if it was an exercise or real-world, and it just kinda fascinated me. Enjoyed going up to Comox and sit at the end of the runway watching the NORAD scramble every day (until they installed the monster fence, that is). Cheers, and looking forward to hearing more from ya!
Very good Sedlo! You are correct - we hail Russian aircraft as “Sedlo” as they don’t file flight plans. It’s a universal callsign. It’s used in exercises and real-world intercepts.
@@tonyledsham2810 I wonder what it was… I have a recoding somewhere, it was pretty faint. And it sounded pretty relaxed, too. Might have been Hornets out of Comox or ANG out of Portland. Still not sure if it was real world or excercise.
Very sad story about the collision to the ground on a novice pilot. One would be tempted to think that all the FBW protections would mean the end of accidents in training, but that kind of tragedy puts a end to any wish that a training course could be shortened, because fighters became much easier to fly.
It was very sad @magoid. He (Spike) was new to the Hornet, but a very experienced fighter pilot, including Fighter Weapons Instructor on the F-5. It was a totally avoidable accident.
These pilots need to reach out to ED and tell them that their flight models for the Viper/Hornet are just plain wrong. every pilot interview says that the Viper outrates the Hornet whilst in DCS.....it's the opposite. PS - another great vid. :-)
@Pukin-Dog the F-16 will out-rate all teenage fighters in a sustained (high-energy) fight. The F-18 can outrate the F-16 for a short duration, due to the superior AOA capability, but it washes off all the airspeed, so it’s a last-ditch manoeuvre.
@@tonyledsham2810 IRL yes - but not in DCS. In DCS across all fuel states the Hornet can maintain over 1 deg/sec more than the Viper...and in DCS it's the Viper which bleeds speed excessively at high AoA. The problem seems to be that the DCS Viper has too much drag at high AoA which means that when not pulling alpha it accelerates very quickly (making it hard to maintain speed without going too fast) and when you get too high AoA it's bleeds enerygy fast. If you use Tacview then set up a viper and hornet and test for yourself.
@@Pukin-Dogit’s amazing how accurate DCS is! There’s another aspect to dogfighting. Both rate and radius must be considered. The F-18 had a smaller radius, so even though the F-16 could outrate our turn at their corner speed, they were flying a bigger circle around our smaller circle. They could end up in our “six” but we would manage our speed and intimidate them with nose position and force them into the slow-speed environment, where we had the advantage.
@@tonyledsham2810 DCS is fairly accurate...but something is definetely out with the Hornet and\or Viper. IRL the Viper can outrate the Hornet. In DCS it doesn't. The Viper can maintain 20-21deg/sec. The Hornet can maintain 22.
Nice to see the interviewer knows a lot about BFM. He asks good questions and understands the answers.

When are we going to get a 10 Percent True episode about... Steve Davies?
PLEASE, ask your interviewees to comment on dissimilar engagements with other aircraft, too, outside of the US Navy and Air Force.

Thanks “Sedlo” (you must be a NORAD guy 😲) More on the AJet in episodes 3 and 4 in the new year. Crazy times!

On excercise that is.
This is going to be another great interview!

There is a new ground avoidance system on the F-35, which is very advanced.
