  • Straddle Carrier cranes are becoming more common in medium and large modern ports. They are much more efficient in the port than old style trucks with flatbeds and significantly reduce traffic jams and container backlog on the dock. The straddle carriers in this video are diesel electric hybrids at the Virginia International Gateway terminal in Norfolk, Virginia.

I helped design and build that terminal back in 2007. Great to see it running! It was the first semi-automated terminal in the United States

Used to call these things dinosaurs when I was little. My dad was a trucker and I went along with him for 2 years in the truck, we spent many hours at many different ports seeing cool things like this. Glad to learn they have a formal name!

That IS wild, how the straddle carrier drivers sit sideways. Thanks for the informative video of the little known, yet vital minutiae of the modern dockyard.⚓🏗🚢🧭🗺✅.

Bryan, recently finished "The Box" by Marc Levinson about the development of the containerization business. Highly recommended for an understanding of how the process began, and developed. Thanks for your videos.

What exactly is a “ longshoreman “?. I work right next to the port of Long Beach in California and we call everyone a longshoreman who works in these container yards.

    Hi Bryan
When I was on container ships in the early 1970s, some ports in Europe used straddle carriers but others (in UK and Australia) used articulated trucks - and I agree, straddle carriers are a faster system (but of course more expensive.) I'd not seen racks in use until this video. I guess the racks are more to help the straddle carrier drivers place the containers directly under the portainer crane (to be in line with the bay being worked on the ship) though they seemed to manage OK without them, and still do in the two lanes in your video where there are no racks. Is that the reason for racks?
Thank you for your videos - I enjoy them.

The racks (trays) are used to reduce strain for the ground men who load the locking pins in each corner of the container.

I never drive these sideways, might pick up or drop the container in that position due to better visibility, but driving a shuttle strad seen in this clip it's either face forward or driving back-end first. Driving sideways hurts both my brain and my spine/ neck/ upper body, for me that driving position is NOT ergonomic no matter what the manufacturer is saying.

From a recent Matt Stoller newsletter: "...our major freight railroads, all of which are Wall Street-owned, are actively disinvesting in rail yards, rolling stock, and distribution centers, cutting service on routes that are profitable, but not profitable enough. "
