  • The 'Island Breeze' was laid down in 1941 and entered service with the Japanese Navy in May, 1943. It was a powerfully armed 'superdestroyer' capable of reaching speeds of over 40 knots fully loaded. the engine's power output was 79,240 hp (at overloaded power output during trials). The ship met its demise during an escort mission to protect a transport convoy - to quote the Hasegawa history: " ... it was attacked by a formation of some 350 US Navy carrier aircraft - a force equivalent to the Japanese Air fleet that attacked Pearl Harbour in 1941."
